Earthquake Science for Elementary and Middle School Students

Are you studying earthquakes in you school? Well, if so, then this site has a lot of helpful resources for you. Check out some of the animations and videos to give you an understanding of earthquakes. If you live in an area that periodically experiences earthquakes make sure to read about earthquake preparedness and discuss getting a plan together with your family.

A historic to present day overview of seismographs. Good animations of the various types of faults.

Learn about earthquake predictions and engineering to withstand earthquakes. Check out the animations and Quicktime movies.
Scripps' Institute Richter Scale Visualization
This site has a tool where you can manipulate the Richter magnitude, S- and P-distribution and amplitude. It was designed by a high school intern at the Scripps Institute. Instructions are on the right bar.

Here are some webquests for school to help you learn about earthquakes.
Web-and-Flow Webquest
A webquest split into different roles, such as developer, city planners & emergency planners. More appropriate for middle school.
5th grade Earthquake Webquest
Design a plan for earthquake preparedness for a town, including educating the population. There are clearly assigned roles in this group webquest.
How Stuff Works Webquest
A clearly defined webquest for middle school students.
Educator's Reference Desk Webquest
An indivual, 1-period webquest for 5-8th graders.
Middle School Webquest
This earthquake webquest is a 10 day process. This may be helpful for homeschoolers or for schools with a very student-centered approach.
