Easiest Halloween lantern ever

Need a no-fuss Halloween lantern?

My five year old son came up with this Halloween glass jar lantern idea all (mostly) on his own, an idea that I thought was too darn cute and easy not to share. If you want a quick, easy-to-make and effectively spooky Halloween decoration, here it is.

Using materials you most likely already have at home, you and the kids can whip this up in no time at all.

Forget messy pumpkins and sharp knives, you can make a whole row of these easy glass jar Halloween lanterns in just one afternoon and when the show's over, you can stash them all in box to be brought out again next year.

No waste, no fuss, no mess, clean and green. What more can you ask for in a Halloween lantern?

Spookyness of course!

Halloween Down Under

Don't miss out on Halloween!

Here in Australia, we don't tend to celebrate Halloween to the extent that certain other countries do.

However, that doesn't stop Aussie kids from wanting to be part of the fun. Costumes, decorations and Halloween themed food are all on the wish list and some Aussie parents will indulge a few of these whims.

Myself included.

Last year I made some cutie cupcakes for pre-school, white with black spiders iced across the top. And I had the whole class making make these little bats too. A big hit with all the kids and it satisfied all Halloween whims last year.

This year, a Halloween party is in the offing, so say hi to one of my two little ninjas, costume courtesy of my husband's recent trip to the United States.

Hee yah!

Easy glass jar Jack-o-lantern

No pumpkins died here...

So, for this particular craft you will need:

A glass jar
Crepe or colored tissue paper
A glue stick
Scissors
A black sharpie or other permanent felt pen
A small candle or tea light
Blu tack or other reusable adhesive

Here's what you do:

Soak the labels off your jar and make sure it's dry.

Cut a piece of crepe paper large enough to wrap around your jar.

Draw a suitably sinister, evil face on the paper, using a black marker pen.

Using scissors, cut out the face, leaving the black marker around the edge of your cut outs, as you can see in the photo. This helps to make your spooky face stand out when your lantern is lit.

Apply your glue stick to your jar or paper, then wrap the crepe paper onto the jar, trimming if necessary.

Now, stick some blu tack or similar to the bottom of your small candle and press your candle into your jar. If using a tea light, just place it in the bottom of the jar.

Light your candle.

Place your jar on a windowsill facing the street and wait for the sun to go down....

Boo!

Check out the 2010 Melbourne Zombie Shuffle!

Melbourne CAN get into the spirit of Halloween!

Fantastic footage of the Zombie shuffle in Melbourne in 2010, complete with freakishly scary clown, zombie control officer, zombies in the underground train system and just lurching through the city's main streets. ARRRGGGHHH!!

Glad I didn't take my boys to this, they would have FREAKED OUT completely and probably not have slept soundly for weeks afterwards, hehehe!

Very cool article and I love the font of your headings!!! I like Halloween, too, although my son is old now so he doesn't dress up. I do, however,l dress up my dog and we go trick or treating at the neighbor's house for snacks. She likes it. ThankS!

Oh yes...I like your son's Halloween Lantern, cute and simple to make. Also I really like the idea of a more simplistic Halloween...parties, spider cupcakes, etc. Nice, and fun for little Ninjas for sure.

Thanks Kathy, I like the simple stuff too, I have no desire to go all-out on Halloween, just a bit here and there....

I'm planning a page about re-purposing canning jars. Once I get it made, I'll feature your project on it. Very nice.
I lived in Alice Springs for 3 years but don't remember any Halloween activities there back in the early 90s.
