The History Of Easter Egg Hunts

easter egg hunt historyThe Easter egg hunt wouldn't be as much fun without the Easter bunny. And indeed, the Easter bunny plays a big part in the Easter egg hunt tradition. It is said that the Easter bunny brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and sometimes also toys to the homes of children.

I won't bore you with the origins of the Easter bunny, after all, the Easter bunny was around since the ancient Romans. So one page just wouldn't be enough.

The origins of Easter egg hunts are still kind of mystery, but it is said that Easter Egg Hunting, as we know it today, began in America when German immigrants brought their Easter traditions to Pennsylvania in the 1700s.

Due to its popularity, the festivity soon spread across the nation, and baskets replaced nests. After a while the game evolved into a treasure hunt with bigger prizes, sometimes even toys.

Ideas For a Great Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Egg HuntEaster egg hunts can be great fun, especially for the children.

Organizing an Easter egg hunt can be easy and fun, you just need some good suggestions on where to begin. Let these ideas be an inspiration for you.

1. Use clues

why would you just let your children search for the easter baskets if you can make the easter egg hunt a great adventure your kids will never forget? Hide the easter basket somewhere hard to find and write some clues. Each clue would lead to the next one and the last clue would show your kids the way to their prize. They will love the easter basket you put together even more. Try to make your clues as interesting as possible so your kids will feel like they are on a real treasure hunt.

2. A treasure map

you can go even further and make a real treasure map with the locations of the hidden eggs. Try to make the map as interesting as possible and draw every tree, bush or flower on it. But don't draw the paths. Give a copy of the map to your kids and send them out to find the eggs. Following a treasure map can be great fun and your kids will never forget it. This idea works best if you are using a large area for your egg hunt.

2. Easter egg hunt with numbers

Hide plastic eggs and tell your children they have to find a certain amount of eggs. Each egg will have a number in them ranging from 1 to 10 and of course some candy. After all eggs are found, total up the numbers that are in their eggs and the one with the highest number wins a prize. The kids that don't win will still keep the candy or toys you put inside each egg, so everybody wins.

4. Reverse the egg hunt.

why should only kids search for the eggs. Give each child a certain number of eggs. They will have a certain amount of time to hide them as good as possible. After some time passes, the parents go searching for the eggs. The kid who hid the egg found last, wins a prize.

5. Night-time egg hunt

this one is more suited for adults. You color the eggs with glow in the dark paint and hide them as good as possible. The participants then have to find the eggs in the dark. If you want to make the egg hunt a little easier, give each person a flashlight.

6. Color egg hunt

for this idea you have to use exactly as many colors to paint the eggs, as there are kids. Now hide the eggs and write each color down to a piece of paper. Now let each kid choose one piece of paper. They have to search for the eggs with the color written down on the piece of paper they chose. The one who finds all same colored eggs first wins a price.

Usually the little things are the ones that count. So don't spend great amounts, buy some candy, a few chocolate bars or small toys.

Of course you have to add some chocolate easter eggs and chocolate easter bunnies. That's a must. Some stores also have prepared Easter gift baskets which are full of goodies and toys.

What To Do If It Is Raining

rainy easterEaster eggs are the most fun if you can be outside. It's much more fun if the area in which the Easter eggs are hidden is big. But if it's raining, you can't go on an Easter egg hunt outside. And chances of rain are decent, after all, it's the spring season.

What to do if it's raining outside? People had a few good ideas on what to do if rain ruins your Easter egg hunt. Gladly they shared those suggestions with us.

You could hide jelly beans inside the house and have your adults or kids hunt for them. Depending on the egg of the participants you can make the hunt easy or hard. Ever tried to see a black jelly bean on a black object? It is almost impossible to notice it.

And you don't even have to use jelly beans. You could hide some Easter eggs inside and tell your kids to search for them. There usually are many good hiding spots inside and if you hide the Easter eggs right you might be able to get your kids to clean up the house for you in the process.

There are many other Easter games, tat can be as much fun as the easter egg hunt. And they can be played inside. One of my favourite games is the egg rolling.

Give each child a plastic egg and instruct them to place their eggs on the floor in front of them. Then, at your command, the children race to push the Easter egg to the opposite side of the room with their noses. The first person to reach the other side wins a prize.

We used to have a wonderful organized Easter Egg Hunt in our town but last year we couldn't find a group to organize it. I hope someone will take it on this year. Our church always has a great one, too.

I love organizing Easter egg hunts.
