Some Design Techniques for your Easter Eggs

Add some flair to your Easter eggs with simple at home tricks

I got an email from Disney's Family Fun and it had a bunch of ideas for getting unique designs on your eggs - no specialty tools require. Have a look at their suggestions.
  • Sticker Stencils Egg decorating couldn't get much simpler than this method: all you do is apply stickers to your egg before dyeing to create cool shapes and silhouettes. Click here for more Easter Egg Decorating ideas.
  • Rubber Banded Eggs Twisting bands around an egg can be challenging, but the result is a snappy, colorful creation.
  • Leaf Print Eggs Instead of opting for the classic egg-dyeing technique this Easter, turn a new leaf with this reverse-stenciling method.
  • Dripped On Eggs Kids will get a kick out of letting the rubber cement gloop and dribble and squiggle all over (the Easter egg, that is).
  • Cool Crayon Colors Go ahead and break the mold when decorating your eggs this year
-- and have an eggs-traordinary time in the process. We've substituted crayons for conventional egg dye, coloring right on still-warm hard-boiled eggs. The heat melts the wax, creating smooth swaths of color.

Dry Your Designs Quickly

Make a quick Easter Egg holder when you cut circles into an old cardboard paper-towel tube.

Its On The Inside That Counts

Surprise someone

I found this "eggsalent" idea on one of my favorite food websites, Epicurious.com. The recipe is called "Chocolate Filled Delights". Basically it involves hollowing out egg shells and filling them with melted chocolate, then allowing them to dry.. No need to keep them white, you could dye them as well! Either way, I think its a cool idea!

Eggs on a stick?

Well, they're not really eggs..

I came across this blog entry while looking at ideas for kids birthday cakes actually! There are a lot more Easter themes than just eggs (chicks, bunnies, etc..) but I thought it would fit well right here. Check out the Bakerella Blog to view all of these Easter "Cake Pops". Looks like they're just small cakes or brownies on a stick, dipped in some royal icing and decorated. You could even dip them in melted chocolate or whatever else takes your fancy. Very cute indeed! What a great idea for arranging an Easter basket!

"Easter Egg" Decorations and Natural Dyes for your eggs

Made from a sugar solution and balloons

I subscribe to a newsletter on different chemistry projects and topics put out by about.com author Anne Marie Hellmenstein, Ph. D. She's put out an Easter-themed newsletter, with several cool Easter Egg projects. One of them contains instructions for how you can make a string Easter egg, modelled on a balloon and constructed of a sugar solution and string.

Hellmenstein also includes detailed instructions on how to color your Easter eggs with natural dyes.

Natural Dyes

Subtly color your Easter eggs this year with natural dyes

If dying your Easter eggs with natural dyes, you can both hard-boil and dye your eggs at the same time. Simply boil some water (add a little vinegar for more intense color) and hard-boil your eggs as normal!

    • purple grape juice - lavender

    • small quantity of red onion skins or red wine - violet blue

    • red cabbage - blue

    • spinach leaves - green

    • turmeric - yellow

    • carrots - orange

    • coffee - brown

    • beets - pink

    • lots of red onion skins - red

Silk Tie-Dying

Transferring designs from silk ties to your Easter Eggs

Who would've guessed that Martha Stewart would have a few ideas up her sleeve (or previously around someone's neck) for decorating Easter eggs? Check out her article on how to dye eggs from scraps of old silk ties!

Clear out overstuffed closets or make a trip to a local thrift store to get your supplies for this project.

Tools needed to make Ukrainian Easter Eggs or "Pysanky"

You can buy the eggs, vinegar and dye on your own

We wouldn't suggest you buy your eggs on eBay! It might be a good place to pick up a Kistka though!

Buy an Egg Lathe on eBay

Perfect your pysanky or other egg designs

An egg lathe will allow you to perfectly map out and sketch your egg designs before you start applying wax to your pysanky or other original egg art. Buy one secondhand at eBay from a once-ambitious egg designer (you might find a bargain!).

Which Easter Egg Decorating Method Do You Prefer?

Are you a Dudley's traditionalist or do you opt for something more extravagant?

How do you do your Easter Eggs? Do you just pick up a Dudley's kit and stick with that? Maybe you like to go a bit more extreme and try the Ukrainian method with wax? Do you hard-boil your eggs or blow them hollow?
