Eastern Screech-Owl
The most distinctive feature of the Eastern Screech Owl is the loud call. They are not named a Screech Owl for nothing! If you are looking for the owl, chances are you will not see her in the woods, but you will hear her. She has no control over her calls, especially if she is speaking with her babies.
Male Eastern Screech Owls will defend their territories with calls, and often this is attractive to the females. If you are city person, and you enter a rural area near your vacation area, and there is a nest of Eastern Screech Owls, good luck having a nice nights sleep!
A Fierce Little Predator
You do not mess with the Eastern Screech-Owl
If you get close to a nest, and are surprised by how close you are, be sure to gently and quickly leave the area. Many people have lost large tufts of hair being close to a nest where the owlets are sitting. You may be able to hear them purring in their nest, as they like to sleep with a gentle purring noise.
The Eastern Screech-Owl is a very busy owl who is often living in hard woody areas, woody lots near residences, and lake shore areas. They will nest near orchards, cemeteries, and other areas with tall nesting availability.
The Meanest little Bird
Chances are you will not ever get this close
You can ensure that Eastern Screech Owls stay an active part of our rodent control by building a owl nest box in your area. They are a great way to control those pesky mice!
Usually Eastern Screech Owls have 3-8 white eggs at a time, and they are not in a nest, but in a hole in a tree. That is why a nest box works out perfect for them. If you want to see them live in action, you can lay some hay in your box, and build a web cam into the box too. Many successful web channels have been built with the help of a crabby mommy owl.

Baby or Owlets Are the Talkers
Wondering Why you Hear Screeching?
It is only the baby Eastern Screech Owls that actually talk or screech. The baby owls, or Owlets, are very much the most vocal stage in the Eastern Screech Owl lifespan, as when they age, you will not hear the screeching. You will have a chance to hear the Owls call when they are older, and it is more shrill, and sounds like, "Oh-o-o-o that I had never been bor-r-r-n."
Or, that could have just been a depressed Owl watcher, on a bad day? You judge for yourself!
