Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Holistic Approach
Eastern Medicine gaining notoriety as Western Medicine fails
Although the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine have been developed and practiced for thousands of years, the rest of the world didn't start to adopt these principles until about the last century. While many nations have contributed to the wide body of knowledge known as Eastern Medicine, China is commonly recognized as the source of the majority of this knowledge.Because the Chinese viewed the human body as a microcosm, a complete universe within a larger body of many universes, it is a common tenet of Traditional Chinese Medicine that every individual is not only connect to every other, but also connected to nature and the world around us. Chinese scholars purported that good health could be fostered by a holistic approach to life, one that is characterized by a balance of energy. When the body displays symptoms of illness, according to Chinese medicine this is often caused by an energy imbalance. The way to correct this often includes treatments that the Western world does not always strictly recognize as "scientific".
However, as prescribed medications fail, and placebos are known to have effects almost as strong as medications that are approved by the FDA, many Western doctors and patients are beginning to acknowledge the validity of not only herbal remedies and a healthy diet, but also practices such as acupuncture, Reiki, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, moxibustion and fire cupping, as well as Shiatsu and Tui Na massage.
