What type and size do you need to build
A portable type chicken house

The plans you choose should make several different types depending on your area.If you have a small back yard and are only going to have a couple chickens then this portable type may be what you want.Commonly called a A-Frame construction, these naturally are the easiest to build and can be moved from place to place. Also notice that the landscaping here plays a big role in deciding on this type as it needs to be flat as possible, below is a picture of the plans for this style
One Size Does Not Fit All
When deciding on the right chicken house the size really does matter as it is best to build one too big than too small and then try to cram all the chickens into it.Chickens are like people, they need their space too, usually one chicken will be happy with 3-4 feet of space to roam around in.But then taking into account the room for feeder boxes, water containers, laying boxes and the space begins to get divided up.If your choice is to have several chickens then plan on building a medium or large chicken house and they will be happy in their new home and give you more in return.
New Or Used Material When Using Chicken House Plans
There is no rule that says you have to buy new material to build a chicken house, some have even used PVC plastic pipe to construct them. Most plans point to wood as the main building material because it is strong and lasts for years but if you choose the wrong type that can get expensive.Look around you may have some scrap wood laying around, there may be a place near you that has used lumber cheap or at a discount. When i built mine i used wood from an old barn that had the top blown off it by a wind storm leaving the loft exposed.
