Learn How to Make Croissants Here

retweet

I first created a "Monkey Brain Lens" that I called, "Croissants vs. Biscuits" and this got me into thinking about them. But it wasn't until I watched the movie, "It's Complicated" that I wanted to try my hand at making different types of croissants. The word croissant just sounds so hot and fresh when it rolls off your tongue that you just want to stuff one in your mouth. Watching the movie, made it look so easy that I searched on Youtube to prove them wrong. I was wrong, below you will find various videos and recipes on how to make croissants, there are a ton of recipes that range from easy to hard, but they all turn out great. Do you have a favorite croissant recipe?

How Do I make Croissants?

So, you've never made a croissant in your life, not even a store-bought Pillsbury one. I've got a few pointers for you when you go out hunting for instructions, the first one is to read through this entire page because we have recipes and quick videos on how to do them. Second, if what you want to make is not here mention it just below this post and I'll get to hunting and try it out myself and post pictures of our experiment for you. Third, there are many books out there on the subject but sometimes finding them can prove to be a struggle. How do I know? Simple, the past two weeks I've went to both BORDERS and Barnes & Noble and neither had a single book on making croissants. In fact I was asked, "Well you could just look through all the cookbooks we have and see if there are any recipes?" Umm, yeah I don't plan on going through EVERY cookbook, nor do I feel like buying a book to find out there are no recipes in it. Check your library to see if they have one. Finally, my favorite place has once again proved to me why I love them so much. Amazon has cookbooks and recipes for croissants. The books are listed below so hope it helps.

Cookbooks that Include Croissant Recipes

since I never could find a croissant cookbook

After hours of searching the net and working with bookstore employees I found a few cookbooks that included croissant recipes and wanted to list the various books with the page numbers in case others wanted to try some.

- The French Recipe Cookbook: Over 200 Authentic and Inspiring Dishes, Shown Step-by-Step: cheese & ham croissants page 80
- Bernard Clayton's New Complete book of Breads: Swiss Croissants page 477-480, Brioches, French and tips for on pagest 604-620
- 200 Fast & Easy Artisan Breads by Judith Fertig: Flaky, Buttery Croissants page 276
- Bernard Claytons Complete Book of Small Breads: More Than 100 Recipes for Rolls Buns Biscuits Flatbreads Muffins and Other: Croissants 121-132, brioches page 91-92

I will be trying each one out and reporting back. Have you made croissants lately?

Your Croissant Questions

Around 1984, I used to frequent a restaurant in Gaithrsburg, MD called the Baker's Garden. It was there that I used to indulge on the most wonderful savory cheese croissant that I have ever tasted. It wasn't made with the familiar sweet cream cheese filling but with a shredded harder cheese that almost reminded me of Parmigiano Reggiano. Of course that restaurant has long since closed. Does anyone know of a croissant product or recipe that comes close to what I tried to describe?

Croissant Experiment

Due to this page, I have decided that I will dedicate time to creating new types of croissants I've read about here with my kids. I've never experienced beyond tossing them from the freezer to the oven, so this will be a first. I'll make sure to post each experiment I do, how we did it and how they turned out. If possible we'll include photos. What should we start with?

We made Chocolate Croissants

chocolate croissant

Here's the outcome of our chocolate croissants. We used the chocolate chips you use for cookies, sprinkled a few at the wide end and rolled it up like a croissant (used the Pillsbury croissants) and baked at the desired temp. Turned out very chocolaty but you must be careful eating it as they can get very hot.

Doesn't this look delicious?

Experiment #2

Making the Baked Chicken Croissant Wreath

Chicken Baked Croissant

The kids and I did try this, first we boiled the chicken and sliced it up into tiny shreds to place inside the croissant. We laid the croissant rolls out into the shape of a happy sun and quickly mixed the ingredients before spreading it onto the rolls. The kids loved spreading the cheese over the top of our chicken mixture but I got the honor of covering it all up. it came out extremely cheesy and the kids LOVED it, asking for more.

TIP: Make sure not to double layer any of the rolls over the top, they tend not to cook completely if you do. Or make sure that you fill it up completely with food or leave it in for a few extra minutes.

Halloween Croissants

Mummy Dogs (Halloween Recipe)

What You Will Need:
  1. 1 package ready-made croissants (I like Pillsbury best)
  2. 1 package hot dogs
  3. Condiment of choice (I like miracle whip but the kids like Ketchup & mustard)
  4. Roll out your croissants and place your hot dogs in them. Place hot dogs on the long part and roll. Toss them in the oven at 375 (unless your package states otherwise) for 15 minutes. Once done let them cool and serve. Happy Halloween!
