How to Clean your House Effortlessly, Chemical Free!

The original E-Cloth Cleaning System by EnviroProducts Ltd is a range of cloths and complementary products that use microfibre in their materials to trap dirt and dust effortlessly.

Each cloth is made from millions of tiny fibres. Each cloth has 480,000 strands per square centimetre, with each microfibre 1/100th the width of a human hair! This, combined with their clever wedge shape, means that the cloths have high absorbency and outstanding cleaning ability, using only water. Unlike normal cleaning cloths, they break up, trap and absorb dirt into the material - even grease!

All you need to do is wet them, wring them out, and use them damp on almost any surface. Once fully dirty, they can be washed either in the washing machine, or by boiling in an old saucepan. Then, they are ready to use again and again, with a life expectancy of around 300 washes.

So, now you know a little bit about the basic E-Cloth. Let's start to look at the system in more detail!

According to E-Cloth themselves, it is possible to clean the entire house and reduce the use of chemical cleaning products by up to 90% just by purchasing several general purpose cloths, a glass & polishing cloth (or two) and a Mop System.

The main E-Cloth is the General Purpose Cloth. This can be used dry, for general dusting, or damp, for general cleaning. It can also be used wet on extra dirty surfaces and stubborn stains. It comes in a variety of colours, so you can allocate each cloth to a different room or task.

The other key E-Cloth is the Glass and Polishing Cloth. This is my personal favourite. It not only cleans mirrors, windows and glass, but stainless steel and chrome too, and all other shiny surfaces. What makes it so great? It cleans these surfaces with ease, and leaves them GLEAMING. Like new! No more long frustrating attempts to get the mirror smear-free as well as dirt-free.

The cloth has a different fibre construction and weave, which reduces overall absorbency and makes it less effective on heavy dirt. However, it increases the speed at which moisture is absorbed and its performance on light grease and dirt is excellent, which is what enables it to leave surfaces so shiny. So always use after the General Purpose Cloth for best results, unless you simply want to make a surface shiny.

Finally, to give your floors the same easy-clean treatment, there is the E-Cloth Mop. It can be used on all floors including wooden, parquet, stone, marble, laminate and tiled floors, and comes with a damp head and dry head. These quickly and simply velcro on and off the main mop - use the dry head first to catch dirt and dust on the floor, then clean with the damp head. The weave and longer fibres of the damp head are designed to break up and hold thick grease and dirt, which ordinary mops leave behind. The fibres absorb water fast and effectively.

The mop also has an extendable handle and can even be used to clean walls and ceilings!

So no more endless scrubbing, like this poor love...

Other useful basics to have in your cupboard are the Sponge Cloth and Spray Bottle.

The Sponge Cloth is the best cleaning tool for bathrooms, and also useful in the kitchen too. It is made from super absorbent, rinse clean fibres, which can absorb more than four times their own weight.

The Spray Bottle is handy for filling with water and spraying surfaces you want to clean, or spraying the cloth itself to re-dampen, to save you going back to the sink all the time.

Many household cleaning products contain a plethora of chemicals. Although they seem harmless enough on the surface, such chemicals have been linked with all sorts of problems, including allergies, skin sensitivities, and even diseases such as cancer.

At this point, you might be worried about bacteria, and whether the E-Cloth is effective in disinfecting your surfaces as well as cleaning them. While general E-Cloths are indeed thorough cleaners in themselves, you can have extra piece of mind with an E-Cloth Antibacterial Cloth.

This cloth comes in a lovely shade of red, and incorporates natural nano-silver to kill bacteria caught in the cloth.

A new product from E-Cloth is the Oven & Hob Pack. This set contains two cloths. The first has one stripey side, with scrubbing stripes to get to work on baked on food. Flip it over to clean up splatters and grease. The other cloth is a Polishing Cloth, to get the oven and hob nice and shiny.

There are also a range of products relating to washing up. There is a Washing Up Pad, which can be used just with water, or with a small amount of natural washing up liquid (I use Ecover). Like normal wash-ups, it has a sponge side and a scrubbing side.

E-Cloth also offer microfibre tea towels, and kitchen hand towels, both of which are extra absorbent, and nice and large. The tea towels leave items smear-free, and dry in just one wipe.

You can, of course, use your General Purpose Cloths throughout the rest of the house.

However, E-Cloth also produce E-Cloth Dusters, which are super soft and made of E-Cloth's special fibres, giving them a natural positive charge which attracts and holds dust without the need for polish.

If you prefer to still have a few cleaning products to hand, or that you have some stubborn areas that E-Cloth can't handle, there are plenty of effective cleaning products that are chemical-free and natural.

The two ranges I like to use are Ecover and BioD. I use their products in conjunction with E-Cloth, for the jobs that E-Cloth don't cover, like disinfecting sinks or cleaning the loo. I use Ecover's toilet cleaner and washing up liquid, and BioD's big bumper tub of disinfectant, which lasts for ages.

I also keep BioD's Household Polish and Glass & Polish Spray to hand, but to be honest, E-Cloth is so good, I haven't used them for ages!

So, there it all is, in a nutshell.

E-Cloth not only significantly cuts down on the chemicals in your home (up to 90%), but can also significantly decrease your household bills by cutting out the need for most cleaning products altogether (according to E-Cloth, averaging £100 per year!)

Of course, the joy of E-Cloth is you can invest in as little or as much as you want. I would advise trying out a pack of general purpose cloths first, to see how you get on. If you like the results, invest in a basic cleaning kit by adding the mop and glass & polishing cloth. Then, you can build from there. You might just want to add the odd extra, such as the antibacterial cloth or a sponge cloth for the bathroom, or you might want to invest in the whole range!

Remember, all of the cloths are an investment, so long as you take care of them. They will last for around 300 washes (that's almost six years if you washed them every week - longer for those you use and wash less often - saving you six years of cleaning product purchases!)

It means that, aside from things like disinfecting your sinks and drains or cleaning the toilet, everything in your house can be cleaned, WITH JUST WATER!
