Easy Homemade Dog Treats
Ranked #4,338 in Pets & Animals, #109,585 overall
I have a confession to make. My dogs are slightly spoiled. They go on play dates with their doggy friends. They have leashes that color coordinate with their outfits and personalities. They have dozens of squeaky toys, balls and.... As I said. They're slightly spoiled. However one of my favorite ways of spoiling my dogs is making them their favorite homemade dog treats. Thankfully, I've found and created a few recipes that are both easy to make and healthier than most store bought dog treats that are chocked full of nasty chemicals and fillers.

Chicken Flavored Dog Treats

- Serves: 2 dz cookies
- Prep Time: 15 min
- Total Time: 2 hrs
In my household, we call these Truman Cookies after a dog friend (Truman the Boxer) who got us hooked on these delicious chicken flavored dog treats. Ok, I admit that I have never tried these cookies, but both my girls anxiously beg for more any time they smell them in the kitchen.
Ingredients
- 1/2 chicken breast
- 1 c. cornmeal
- 2 c. wheat flour
- 6 tbsp oil
- water
Instructions
Add ½ chicken breast to 4 c. boiling water. Boil 1 hour. Add water to cover chicken as needed. Do NOT add salt.
Drain chicken. Set aside the broth and shred 1/8 c. of the boiled chicken.
Mix together 1 c. cornmeal, 2 c. wheat flour, 6 tablespoons oil, 1 c. chicken broth, and 1/8 c. shredded chicken. Stir until well mixed.
Place the dog treats dough on a flat surface and roll out until 1/3-1/2" thick.
Use bone shaped cookie cutters to cut out dog treats. Place on cookie sheet. If you do not have bone shapes, simply cut into sticks or drop half dollar sized pieces on a cookie sheet. (The dogs won't know the difference.)
Bake dog treats at 350 degrees for 25-35 minutes.
Store in an airtight container for 7-10 days... Ok, dog treats don't last that long in my house either.... But in theory they can last that long... so long as my dogs aren't in your kitchen.
Tips & Warnings
*When purchasing chicken, look for organic or all natural, hormone-free chicken. (It's better for your puppy's health)
*Short on time? Check out the health food aisle of your local grocery store for low-sodium chicken broth made without onions. (Onions are poisonous to dogs!)
*Have extra broth? Make Pupsicles!

Frozen Dog Treats
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Total Time: 2-3 hrs
Does your dog like to chew on ice cubes, too? Or like cool treats? Boil a little extra chicken when making the chicken flavored dog treats above, and make two different treats at the same time.
Ingredients
- Boiled chicken (shredded) with broth.
Instructions
Boil a little extra chicken when making the treats above (or the next time you boil a chicken for supper).
Add one part shredded chicken to one part chicken broth (salt-free!). Pour mixture into ice cube trays and freeze.
Store frozen pupcicles in a freezer bag for up to one month.
Doggie S'mores
I created this recipe for a S'mores contest a few years ago. Everyone else was tweaking the same old traditional campfire recipe, but I thought my puppies needed to share in the fun, too! After a little trial and error, Esmé and Mireille gave me four paws up. Oh, and we tied for 1st place in the contest to boot!
Ingredients
- Plain graham crackers.
- Carob chips.
- Low fat cream cheese.
Instructions
Break graham crackers in half and top each with 1 tsp carob chips. (Chocolate contains theobromine which is poisonous to dogs. Carob has a similar look and taste to chocolate but completely safe for both humans and canines.)
Microwave 20-30 seconds or until the carob starts to soften. Do not over heat. Use a knife to spread it on the cracker. Place in the freezer for 3-5 minutes for the carob to reharden.
Spread one cracker with 2 tsp low-fat cream cheese and top you s'mores with the other cracker. Drizzle the top with melted carob for an extra special look or if you are making them for a dog party or as a gift.
Simply wrap and toss in the bag to enjoy on the hike. Cream cheese will keep for several hours outside of a cooler. If you are going to be camping over night, wrap in foil and place in the ice chest.
Don't worry if you grab the wrong snack and bite into this dog treat. Humans think they taste great, too.
“Can I have s'more, please?”
Flea Repellent Dog Treats
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Total Time: 10 mins
Did you know dog treats can repel fleas? Garlic is a natural flea repellent, and while you can just add a sprinkle of garlic powder over your dog's food each day, why not make these super easy dog treats?
Ingredients
- Stale bagel.
- Garlic powder (NOT fresh garlic).
- Non-stick cooking spray.
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°.
Slice a plain or whole wheat bagel into ultra thin slices. (Stale bagels slice better than fresh ones and taste the same!)
Put bagel slices on a cookie sheet and coat pieces with cooking spray and garlic powder. Flip and repeat on other side.
Place tray of bagel dog treats in the oven and bake 2 minutes on each side or until crispy.
WARNING: Never give dogs fresh garlic or large amounts of garlic to dogs. Garlic contains a chemical that can cause anemia in dogs if fed in large amounts. Smaller dogs are more susceptible than medium or large dogs.
Peanut Butter Buddies
Cloud Star Soft & Chewy Buddy Biscuits Dog Treats, Peanut Butter, 6-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 4)
Amazon Price: $15.60 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
When I don't have the time to cook the girls' treats, I love Cloud Star's Peanut Butter Soft & Chewy Buddy Biscuits. These all natural, no preservative, corn-free dog treats are also low fat... which helps my furbies keep their girlie figures. Another thing I love about all Little Cloud Soft & ChewyBuddy Biscuits is that they can be easily torn in pieces with one hand... which is important during training sessions with small or young dogs.
The girls also like the sweet potato flavor, but peanut butter's their favorite.
Dog Birthday Cakes
I can't stand the smell of liver, but both girls love the taste. Every year for their birthdays, they each get a liver birthday cake with peanut butter icing. (I know. You want one, too!) Luckily for me, our local dog bakery (yes, dog bakery) makes personalized liver cakes so my kitchen stays stinky-liver-free. Last year, I made the mistake of taking Mireille with me when I went to pick up her cake. She didn't touch it, but her eyes stayed opened wide and on the bakery box the whole ride home.
Jealous? If you live in Missouri, check to see if one of the five Treats Unleashed bakeries is near you. Otherwise, they will ship their fresh baked treats.
And as Mireille says, "NUM NUM NUM NUM!"
Level 10 Liver Dog Treats
So your dogs NEED liver treats (or so they tell you) and you don't mind the stinky liver smell? Every once in awhile I do commandeer a friend's kitchen (who actually likes the liver smell?!?!) and make these Level 10 treats
Ingredients
- Raw liver.
- Butter
Instructions
In a skillet, melt a large tbsp butter and add liver chopped into nickel sized pieces. Sautee.
Place on a paper towel to soak up excess butter when you remove from skillet. Crumble liver pieces and use sparingly. (Cooked liver contains higher amounts of fat than most treats and can cause stomach upset if you give them too much fatty foods.)
Alternative: I do know people who just go through the drive through at KFC, but their liver contains higher amounts of fat and salt... and you'll have enough liver treats for 50 dogs.
Heart can also be substituted for liver. Deer heart treats will crumble more than liver but contain less fat.

- It depends on the store bought treats you buy and the quality of the ingredients. When I buy my girls store bought treats, they only get healthy, all natural dog treats that are dye-free and low in salt and other preservatives. (Most commercially made dog treats aren't.) Most of these recipes are much healthier than their commercial alternatives IF quality, all natural ingredients are used... such as sodium free, all natural, free range chicken stock. The doggie s'mores on the other had are a once in a great while treat as they contain no nutritional value.
