Making Your Own Detergent Is Easy ... And Frugal
Have you ever thought about making your own liquid laundry detergent. It's easier than you think and can save you a bundle in the long run. I'll share a recipe below and even found a great video that will show you exactly how to make homemade laundry detergent.
There are only three main ingredients plus water. Give it a try. It's simple and the end result will get your clothes as clean as the expensive stuff you buy at the store.
As an added benefit, you know exactly what goes into this soap... No added chemicals or preservatives that can't be good for your clothes or your skin.

Laundry Detergent Recipe
With just three ingredients that you can find at your local discount or grocery store it is easy to make homemade laundry soap. Here's the basic recipe:
In a large pot, heat 3 pints of water. Add the grated bar soap and stir until melted. Then add the washing soda and borax. Stir until powder is dissolved, then remove from heat.
In a large clean pail, pour 1 quart of hot water and add the heated soap mixture. Top pail with cold water and stir well. Pour the detergent mixture into clean detergent bottles, or keep it in a large bucket with a lid. If you are using the bucket, keep a paint stirring stick close by and give your soap a good stir before you use it.
Use 1/2 cup per load.
* Good soap bars to use are Fels Naptha, Ivory and Zote brand ones.
I would also like to invite you to visit this homemade laundry detergent post for a more detailed recipe and lots of discussion about the best recipe to use, using this detergent with an HE machine and more.

Using Homemade Detergent
Using your homemade detergent is easy. Give it a good shake or stir and then pour about 1/2 cup into the detergent dispenser of your washing machine. In other words, use it like regular detergent, just make sure it is mixed well first.

- This is a great recipe! We have been using it for two and half years with all of our laundry clients and for our personal wash! We all love it! We make it ten gallons at a time and pour it into a cleaned out laundry bottle.

- Hi, great recipe! I just wrote about this as well. Making your own laundry detergent is surprisingly cheap compared to buying commercial detergents.

- this is the recipe that I used to use....I severely miss making and using it, but live with people now who think it won't work, don't want to use it and think I'm strange for even wanting to make my own laundry soap :(

- I have never done this on my own but my grandma used to do it all the time... and she would dry the clothes on the line (outside)... consider it a cost saver and using solar energy... how much more green can you be... the smell... well that depends on the soap you use... it works well and smells like Irish Spring to me!
