Easy Lessons on Germs

Studies have shown that schools that encourage hand washing by their students on a regular basis have fewer children out sick and have less fecal bacteria found on floors, carpets and in bathrooms, thus less Germs.

We can't always guarantee that our schools are doing their part to teach children about Germs and how they are spread and that they need to wash their hands frequently, so, it is very important that they learn these lessons at home.

Teach your children to wash their hands regularly and especially after these routines get greatly decrease the spreading of germs:

* Using the bathroom
* Petting animals
* Coming in from outside
* Sneezing or coughing
* Handling garbage or picking up things from the floor or ground
* After touching railings, door handles and light switches or other common areas in public areas

Remember these handy hints when washing your hands:

1. Use warm water (not cold or hot) when you wash your hands.

2. Use Soap. Soaps now come in very cool shapes and colors and even smell nice. Antibacterial soaps are OK to use, but regular soap works fine and may actually be better for you.

3. Work up some lather on both sides of your hands, your wrists, and between your fingers. Don't forget to wash around your nails. This is one place germs like to hide. Wash for about 20 to 30 seconds - about how long it takes to sing the "ABC" song - Sang in a regular tone will be just about long enough for you to wash your hands.

4. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.
