Spend Some Time To Meditate

There are many forms of self realization. In this article you will find a list of ways to reflection in order to develop the ability to fully participate, to mindfully do whatever you do with your family, your friends, your colleagues, your children and yourself.

1. Zazen is the study of the self. Master Dogen said, "To study the Buddha Way is to study the self, to study the self is to forget the self, and to forget the self is to be enlightened. Upon his own enjoyment, the Buddha was in seated self realization. Zen routine returns to the same seated self realization again and again. For two thousand five hundred years that self realization has continued, from generation to generation; it's the most important thing that has been passed on." I find the best way to forget my self is to be fully interested to the person I am with or the task I am doing--whether it be baking bread, washing dishes, writing articles or giving online counseling. It is a wonderful feeling to forget my self and really tune into others.

2. Mindfulness self realization is about studying to experience life fully as it unfolds-moment by moment--an invitation to wake up, to experience the fullness of life, and to transform your relationship with problems, fears, pain and stress so that you improve the quality of your life, your creativity and your mental states. Mindfulness, off the cushion, is about being fully present to your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions. It has been said that being mindful is easy, remembering to be mindful is what is difficult. I find associating mindfulness with checking the period is a good way to remember to be mindful. Other associations can work too -- each period you have a cup of coffee or tea, or setting the alarm on your watch to go off each hour are ways to remember mindfulness. You can even download a mindfulness bell on your computer to remind you to be mindful as you are striving. Through the routine of mindfulness, you can study to develop greater calmness, clarity and insight in facing and holding all your experiences, even life's trials, and turning them into occasions for studying, growing and deepening your own strength and wisdom.

3. The routine of Dzogchen, is to remember that our ultimate nature is pure, primordial awareness. Our nature becomes a mirror that reflects with complete openness but is not affected by the reflections, or like a crystal ball that takes on the color of the material on which it is placed without itself being changed. In the routine of Dzogchen we are not distracted by (do not follow) thoughts-- we allow awareness to effortlessly emanate. This pristine awareness is what Tibetans refer to as rigpa, or "ground luminosity". This state is very helpful when we are listening to others. Rather than judging or comparing or offering advice, we see the pureness of the person who is talking, the pureness in us meets the pureness in others.

So, bring what you study in your sitting self realization "off the cushion" into your daily life and you will be meditating, mindful and interested even when you only have a couple of minutes to reflection.

Improve Your Concentration

"In mindfulness self realization, you grow in awareness by becoming conscious of what is unconscious.

You have been meditating for years thinking your mind is still in self realization, and then swiftly you see you have been lost in your thinking the whole time without even knowing it.

Because of our conditioning, the tendency is to feel down about yourself, to feel like this realization that you have been unconscious for so long means you have failed.

But the realization that you have been caught up in thinking for the last 20 years of self realization is a great realization. Because it means swiftly you are aware of what you have not been aware of for over 20 years.

You take a quantum leap in awareness because of this.

Many people spend their time trying to convince themselves and others how great they are, how aware they are. It is not wrong, we were taught to impress others. It is ingrained in us to do so.

But in spending so much time trying to create ourselves to be a certain way, we do not see what is actually here. We have simply created the idea of consciousness on top of our unconsciousness.

For awareness to grow you have to be willing to swiftly without judgement. To allow yourself to be honest and vulnerable enough to see what is unconscious.

You can follow this simple mindfulness self realization technique by closing your eyes and watching your breath and then becoming aware of everything that takes you away from your focus on your breath.
