Decorating With Pumpkins Is Great Fun!

Fall is a refreshing time of year. The kids are back in school and everything is getting back to a more normal routine. And Halloween is just around the corner.

Decorating your home for Halloween can be a great family project. The first thing you need to do is go on a pumpkin hunt. Decide how many pumpkins it will take to accomplish your decorating goal and head on over to your nearest pumpkin patch. If it's warm where you live, get going. If it's chilly, throw on a warm sweatshirt or sweater, but get a move on. The good ones will all be taken if you don't hurry!

Easy Pumpkin Painting

One of the easiest methods of decorating your pumpkins is painting. You don't have the mess of discarding the insides as you would if you carved the pumpkin. Also, if you have smaller children you won't need to worry about anyone getting cut in the process.

Painting a face on the pumpkin allows your child's imagination to be set free. It's a tangible force to be able to create something that everyone will see, and is something every child should experience. Because you don't need to directly supervise the painting process the end result can be a "surprise".

Pumpkin Painting Supplies & Such.....

When you decide that you'd like to try your hand at pumpkin painting you'll need some basic supplies to get you started. The supplies for this craft are relatively inexpensive and readily obtainable. Try a few of the following:

- washable magic markers
- acrylic craft paints
- newspaper, magazines, etc.
- spray sealant
- accessories, such as jewelry, hats, scarf, etc.

Before you start, pick out a face or a design you wish to paint and trace that pattern from the newspaper or magazine onto a clean pumpkin surface. You can always draw your design freehand if you're up for it. As a novice pumpkin painter it might be advisable to select a traditional jack-o-lantern pattern at first. Once you get the hang of it you can try a more engaging design or facial expression.

As you have seen from the carved pumpkins, anything goes. If you don't want to do a simple jack-o-lantern, perhaps one of these will fit the bill:

- a witch
- a ghost
- a scarecrow
- a spider
- a happy face
- a clown
- a cartoon character

As indicated, the sky is the limit when choosing which object will be your very first painted pumpkin. Once you get started, though, you may become "hooked". The next thing you know you'll have an entire family of pumpkins gracing the steps of your front porch.

Decorating With Plain Pumpkins

If you're not one of those individuals that like to carve or paint your way toward decorating for Halloween, or just fall in general, you don't have to be.

Placing a few pumpkins in strategic places outside, as well as throughout your house, can add an inviting and eye-appealing appearance to your home.

However you wish to decorate, just remember to enjoy the holidays with family and friends. To me, they are what makes the world go around.

Let them pick out their own pumpkin and paint to their hearts' content. You won't be able to wipe the smiles off their faces. Don't forget to try your hand at it, too!
