About The Easy Sprout Sprouter

The Easy Sprout Sprouter made my task so much easier.

You see, I was offered an opportunity to review a wheatgrass juicer. The problem is, no one locally sells wheatgrass which meant that I had to take my black thumb and try to turn it green.

Luckily, as I searched for how to grow wheatgrass, I came across a website that featured the Easy Sprout Sprouter. The instructions on growing wheatgrass informed me that the seed should be sprouted before planting. Well, I already was interested in learning how to sprout, which made me as nervous as actually growing things did. So, I checked it out, and the Easy Sprout Sprouter seemed to truly be the easiest way to sprout. I ordered it about as promptly as I order anything. Which is to say, when I realized that the juicer would be at my home before my wheatgrass seeds arrived!

What Is An Easy Sprout Sprouter?

An Easy Sprout Sprouter is a super easy sprouter. For example, you could use a sterile glass jar and sieve, but the glass jar won't give you good air flow around the seeds. If the seeds aren't perfectly drained, they can sit in the liquid and rot instead of sprouting. Other sprouters may be square, taking up quite a bit of space on your counters, or the truly sophisticated sprouters can have matching price tags.

However, the Easy Sprout Sprouter allows for plenty of airflow and drainage. The cup that holds the seeds has drainage slots on the bottom, allowing airflow from the bottom, and the lid that sits on top also has slots to allow sufficient airflow from the top.

The Easy Sprout Sprouter also has an outer cup that has no slots at all, so the sprouter can be used to soak seeds/beans/etc in, and the inner cup can be lifted out, allowing the water to simply drain away instead of having to use one dish for soaking, another for draining, and so on. The outer cup has enough space between it and the inner sprouting cup to let the air flow to reach those bottom slots, and allow excess water to drain at the same time.

The Easy Sprout Sprouter also has an insert that you can place into the bottom of the sprouting cup to prevent smaller seeds from falling through, a flat lid that can be used for traveling (the lids don't snap in tight, so the domed lid could easily fall off while traveling), and a lid with no slots that can be used with the outer cup to store the sprouts.

The entire Easy Sprout Sprouter takes up just a little more space than a coffee travel mug, and should fit into most car cup holders. I purchased my Easy Sprout Sprouter (and seeds, planting medium, etc) from the Sprout People, and they said that the plastic is practically unbreakable. That it could be swung around, shaken, and smacked against sink sides to knock all the water out without breaking the actual sprouter. And you know what? They were right.

I love my Easy Sprout Sprouter. This thing can take you from soaking, to sprouting, to storing the sprouts while changing nothing but the water and the lid. You can even grow wheatgrass in it, though the roots will wrap around the air flow slots in the bottom, and that won't be pretty.

It even will fit in your car's cup holder, and because you don't need to change bowls and such, it's easy to sprout, even on the road! Can you just imagine having fresh sprouts in your hotel room? On business trips? While at Walt Disney World?

Sprouting Wheatgrass With The Easy Sprout Sprouter

Keep in mind that I got my instructions from the Sprout People rather than from the Easy Sprout Sprouter instructions. That being said, I fully intend to go back to the Sprout People the next time I want to sprout something (I've discovered that wheat sprouts are too sweet for my taste).

Now, this is honestly the easiest thing that I've ever done. Simply check the wheatgrass seeds for foreign objects (pebbles and such), plop them into the Easy Sprout Sprouter (I used 2 cups of dry seed and it worked very well, though I wouldn't use more than 2 cups), and run lots of water over them. If you really want to get into it, put the sprouter into the outer cup and fill with water. Swish the seeds around, make sure they're completely covered in water. Allow to drain, repeat until the water runs clear.

Then, put the sprouter into the outer cup, fill the Easy Sprout Sprouter with fresh, clean water, pop the cap on, and allow to soak 8-12 hours. When it's done soaking, lift the sprouter out of the outer cup, pour the water out of the outer cup, and shake/spin/whack the sprouter until all the water's been drained out of it. Put the sprouter back into the outer cup, pop the slotted lid back on (the domed lid if at home, the flat lid if traveling). Let it sit for another 8-12 hours. Rinse the seeds, drain the seeds, pop the lid back on... etc, every 8-12 hours until the seeds have sprouted 1/4" tails.

Once the sprouts have 1/4" tails, make sure that they dry well. You can eat them now, cook them, or pop them into the outer cup with the closed lid on top for storage.

Why Sprout?

To be honest, I have no documentation for this, but the common wisdom seems to be that when a seed is sprouted, the sprout contains all the nutrition of the full grown plant. Some go so far as to say that they contain all the nutrition of the full grown plant, and every plant that would have resulted had that seed been planted. I'm willing to go along with the first theory to a point, but the second seems a wee bit far fetched.

However, there's no denying that while a grain is a grain, a sprouted grain is a living plant. Grains are very difficult to digest without cooking (not to mention possible damage to your teeth?), but proponents of the raw diet can easily eat sprouts. The soaking and sprouting process leaves the seeds relatively soft, and gives them an excellent source of protein. And while I have no documentation for this either, I believe that the nutrients in sprouted grains are more bioavailable than the nutrients in unsprouted grains.

I own four of these sprouters -- perfect sprouts every time with little effort. Much better results than tray sprouters I have tried.
