I Want Easy To Build Chicken Coops!

First, I decided to Google DIY chicken coops. Found a lot of info but I wasn't confident on my (or my fiances) skills at constructing. I then found some Easy To Build Chicken Coops guides. This seemed to be the best choice against buying a pre-made model and hiring someone to build one.

About this guide...It is a step-by-step guide that was very easy to follow. It includes blueprints for small, medium, large and portable type chicken coops. I like that it had lots of pictures along the construction process so that you can make sure your getting each step right. There is a number you can call to speak with a technician about any problems you run into. I recommend going into their video library before you do anything.

How you ask?

Well, chickens "give" us an earth friendly compost to use for the lawn and garden.

Chickens are natural exterminators. No need for pesticides with chickens around. They have such excellent sight that they can spot even the tiniest little gnats flying by. It's fun to watch them leaping for joy while they are taking care of all those nasty and annoying insects.

Chickens make GREAT garbage disposals! Have some leftover food, lettuce that is a tad brown, some unpleasent smelly mystery food?

They will eat it and love it! In fact, I dumped over the fence a casserole I made (but apparently no one liked..) and those little guys ate every bit!

Oh, those eggs! MMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! It IS true, fresh farm eggs DO taste better!

Now, I want to make this clear...my chickens are my pets. I don't think I have it in me to EVER eat them! I've named them all, so it's a definite "No Way!" But....I don't look down on anyone who would raise chickens for food. What ever floats your boat. So, if your a person that raises chickens for eggs and meat, I can appreciate that...another benefit of having chickens! =)

For The FEEDER and the WATER CONTAINER:

Now, I just build my own feeder trough with 3 2x4 pieces of wood. I just used screws and nails to attach them like a trough. At the end, I just found some small blocks of wood to which I attached them as well. And...presto...chango ..A Feeder.

They sell plastic troughs at your local farm store but you can also use a plastic planter base and a 3-5 gallon bucket. Drill 1" holes along the bottom sides of the bucket. Bolt the bucket to the planter base and you have a make-shift feeder.

For my chickens water I have a store bought chicken waterer and I use a circle shallow pan of some sort. Just make sure it is wide enough so a lot of chickens can be around the water pan at once. It also needs to be heavy so they can just kick it around.

For The Floor BEDDING: Simple....HAY! It's like $3/bale.

For The NESTING BOXES: (for the eggs)
Facts-There should be a nesting box for every 2-4 hens.
-The dimensions should be 12"x12"x12"
-Use pine shavings, hay or straw for the nesting box
I just use some old dresser/cabinet drawers. Works pretty well!

For The PERCHES/ROOSTS: (for them to sleep on)
You wan to use something long and skinny enough so they can perch on it. Chickens feel safest up high. Before I had adequate perches build, my chickens went up the nearest tree and wanted to sleep there! Those knuckleheads.

Either wood or piping would work. I just cut some plastic piping we had around and screwed them in some wood on the side of the coop.
