Easy, Breezy Cupcakes

Everyone loves cupcakes. When they're all displayed on the dessert table they create a magical, happy atmosphere. If you want to bring the joy of cupcakes for your baby shower favors, here are some ideas that won't take more than a few minutes and a little patience to create.

If you want to make homemade cupcakes, go right ahead. Choose a cupcake recipe in a luscious flavor. Plan to bake the cupcakes several hours in advance so the frosting won't melt. Or make them the day before and cover them in an airtight cupcake carrier or cake dome.

If you are short on time, ask a bakery to make you cupcakes and frost them in the color of your choice. Then, you can add decorations that make it look like you're a creative genius.

Rubber Duckies

Making cupcakes lots of fun...

One quick, easy and very cute way to personalize cupcakes for a baby shower theme is to pick up some small rubber duckies from the dollar store.

If you can't find them there, try online or at a discount store in the party or bath aisles. The yellow duck baby shower theme is pretty popular so you should be able to find supplies on-hand at most specialty stores.

Sprinkle some blue sanding sugar (available at craft or cooking stores) on the cupcake to simulate water, or use blue frosting to frost the cupcakes to have the same effect.

Place one rubber duck on each cupcake. Voila! The perfect cupcake in under 10 minutes.

Pacifiers

Cupcakes that silence...

Another shortcut to a cupcake that looks amazing is to purchase some pacifiers in the baby aisle of any discount store. Frost the cupcakes flesh tone colored.

You can find icing tint at any candy or cake decorating store and often in craft stores. Stick one pacifier, nipple side down, into each cupcake. It gives the illusion that the cupcake is a baby's face sucking a pacifier.

Caution: These are very cute!

Pink Cupcake Candle Favors

Another 10 minute idea is to take baby-themed candles from any store and place one on top of each cupcake.

You can find them in the shape of baby bottles, rocking horses, baby dolls, etc. These look so adorable when they're all sitting there together, waiting to be munched on.

The image shown here was found online at Baby Gifts & Gift Baskets. The cupcake isn't edible, but these are adorable favors that could be used if you decided to serve cake, or just for decoration.

Fondant for the Daring

Decorate like a pro...

Rolled fondant is nothing more than flattened icing. It's an easy medium to work in and you shouldn't be intimidated about using it. Find it in the cake decorating aisle of larger craft stores or at specialty shops. You can tint the fondant any color you like. Often, you can find pre-mixed vats of black, white, blue, and pink fondant.

To make adorable "baby in a blanket" cupcakes, take one small ball of fondant in a light color to make a baby head. Roll it and place it on a frosted cupcake. Poke holes for eyes, nose and mouth. The fun part of this is making the baby blankets. Take a small piece of fondant in pink, blue, or yellow. Roll it out with a rolling pin and place it on top of the cupcake just under the baby's chin. The result is a tray of cupcakes that look like sleeping babies under blankets.

One word about fondant. It dries out quickly. So roll a little at a time to avoid cracks. Use any remaining fondant for decorative details. Roll out a sheet and cut out cookie cutter shapes such as circles to decorate the side of a cake or to add tiny details to the blankets. If you keep fondant covered tightly, it will last for your next occasion. Just don't over buy. A little goes a long way.
