You Can Quit Smoking
I couldn't ever be without a cigarette. Don't even think about movies; they were a lost cause. I would miss parts of the movie because I had to leave but if I didn't leave I would still miss parts because I would be too busy fidgeting. My work suffered because I had to keep taking breaks to have that cigarette that would keep me going. And that cough... I had an omnipresent cough that would present itself at the most inappropriate times.
I had no freedom. Is that what you feel? I was always linked to my cigarette pack. If I didn't have enough to last me for the day, I would make sure I would have my cigarettes before I had any food. They always seemed to come first for me and it was very frustrating.
Quitting smoking is actually going to take time and effort from you, but it can be easy. The actual hardest part about quitting smoking is making the commitment. Everything else is easy after that.
Think about what you've been through. Think about the time from before you smoked. Did you have trouble breathing? Did you have chest pains? I can't really describe the feeling I had when I was smoking other than there was a "stiffening" of my body. I knew I was polluting my body but I was at a point in my life where it did not matter.
The first step to kicking the habit is to recognize that you indeed need to kick the habit and then you must commit to the quitting process.
You can learn to quit smoking. If I can do it, anyone can!
The Effects of Nicotine
Understanding Your Enemy
Nicotine is a mood-altering drug that has some very different effects in various situations. As a smoker, you will have recognized some of these effects as the cigarette seemed to be the go-to device for whatever it was you needed at the moment, depending on how you smoke your cigarette. When introduced into the body, it causes a rush of adrenaline and stimulates the body which can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. If you take short, quick puffs from a cigarette, you can get a quick stimulation while long, drawn out puffs will induce a more calmed, relaxed state. It enters the bloodstream quickly and can cross the blood-brain barrier. From inhalation to the brain, there is about a seven second gap, so the gratification is quite immediate.
The problem is not the neurophysiological effects of nicotine, but rather the simple, medically-dangerous physical side-effects caused by the smoke-inhalation and the toxic tar present in cigarettes. The chemical dependency brought about long-term exposure of nicotine suffers from a tolerance syndrome in that more is needed over time to achieve the same initially-recognized effects.
Going beyond cancer and whatever else you may know about the effects of smoke-inhaled nicotine such as a blackened lung filled with tar; there are some other effects that should be noted with care.
One of the biggest effects nicotine has on the body is the hardening of blood vessels. These blood vessels no longer remain pliable and can restrict blood flow where it would be needed. In addition to the actual restriction on the blood supply process, it can also cause your blood to clump and clot in your hardened arteries. These effects can cause your heart to work harder, but if one of those clots removes itself and travels to your brain or lungs, then you could die immediately from an embolism or stroke. Lastly, nicotine also raises the beats per minute value of the heart. This increases pulse rate places more strain on the heart and can lead to such disasters as heart failure.
Yeah, it's true, there aren't many people that die from a blood clot formed by smoking and for most people it takes years and years of cigarette abuse to end up in the hospital for lung cancer, but the quality of life you have from the hardened blood vessels, restricted lungs, and overworking heart can be counteracted just by quitting smoking.

How To Quit Smoking
So Simple a Caveman ... Nevermind.
This is the easy three step process.Everyone knows quitting smoking is a very intense commitment. You're going to have problems. No matter how strong you are, the drug called nicotine can really kick you when you're down.
The first part of the process is to go out and buy your crutch. Yes, it's a crutch. What I used was the Commit Lozenge. There's an interesting thing about mint-flavored lozenges. You see, with smoking, there's this initial boost of WHATZUP! when you first inhale. And, believe it or not, this is what the mint lozenge does when you first take it. After you buy it, DON'T OPEN IT! Just stare at it, and trust me, they work.
The second step of the quitting process is to sleep. Yes, you heard me correctly. You're going to have to sleep. But, you can't sleep all day, you say. You're right. Don't have that cigarette right before bed. That's what a lot of people do. They have that cigarette right before bed that calms and relaxes them so they can sleep better. Just skip that cigarette.
The third step happens when you wake up. Drop a lozenge! Run into your kitchen and rip that box open, push the lozenge through the foil, and suck on it. You'll feel happy... and maybe somewhat relieved. Whatever the case may be, you're on your way to quitting.
The ongoing process is to take a lozenge when you need it. Don't wait too long. You'll regret it. You'll even end up buying a pack of cigarettes. Don't worry, you won't need it anymore after a while.
Finally... maybe you should buy some gum. You know, there are a lot of gums out on the market today, but the gum that I find the best out there is called 5 Rain. It's a spearmint flavored gum and it DOES last a long time.
