Quick and Eays Ways to Help the Environment

Ranked #20,506 in Healthy Living, #303,117 overall

Do you want to help the world but don't have a lot of time, money or energy?

This the site for people who care about the environment and have good intentions but are not able to commit a lot of resources to saving the world. These things are super-easy to do, but actually make a difference. If we all do a little to help the environment, the world will be a much better place for everyone. And we all have to start somewhere on our way to a greener lifestyle, and ultimately a better world for all.

A brick in your toilet bowl can conserve lots of water

toileltbowl.jpgOld style toilets use an astounding 13 L or more of water/flush. The newer ones are better, average at 5 or 6 L, but it's still too much. Toilet flushes account for 30% of water use in a household.

With fresh, high-quality water in short supply these days, it makes sense to reduce our consumption as much as possible. There are 2 easy ways to reduce the amount of water we use in flushing the toilet:

1. If it's brown, flush it down. If it's yellow, let it mellow. That is, simply don't flush the toilet so often! A little pee never hurt anyone, and it's actually quite sanitary.

2. Put a brick, or soda bottle filled with some rocks in your toilet bowl. This will reduce water consumption by the size of the bottle (1 or 2 L) /flush. Chances are, you won't notice any difference in toilet performance!

Simple and easy? Yes, of course it is lazy people!

Wear more or less clothes to save on heating costs

heating costs, coolings costs, the environmentIn many climates, it doesn't get that cold or that hot for many months of the year. In these months, try not using any artificial heating or cooling and just wear more or less clothes. For example, in spring or fall time, when there's just a bit of a chill in the air, try wearing extra clothes and keeping your house at 17 or 18 degrees Celsius. Or, when it's getting kind of warm and nearing summer, try wearing shorts and a tank top in your house instead of wearing jeans, a t-shirt and turning on the AC.

It's not so hard is it? And yet, a couple extra months of no heating or cooling can really make a big difference for your electricity bill and the environment. Perfect for lazy people!

Eat all the food you buy to conserve the world's resources

vegetable soup, saving money, vegetables, helping the worldI know a lot of people who end up throwing out vegetables because they go bad before they can eat them. An easy solution to this is Sunday Night Soup or Pasta night. Just throw all your old veggies into a soup with some water, spices, salt/pepper and a piece of chicken or other meat. Cook it up for a few hours and you have healthy, delicious goodness.

Or, get a can of tomato sauce and fry up all your old veggies with some ground meat or chicken. Throw in the sauce and cook for a couple hours. Put over pasta and you have a delicious meal.

So easy and you help the world by consuming all that you buy. It takes a lot of energy to get what you eat to the grocery store so don't just throw it in the garbage. It's so easy and saves you money too!

Have an organic vegetable garden

You will save money, improve your health and help the world

vegetable-garden.jpgIt requires a substantial amount of energy to produce a single carrot or potato that finds its way to your dinner table. Not only the water and manual labor it took to plant and grow the vegetable, but think also about the energy required to produce the fertilizer, package the seeds, transportation costs and the wasted energy in unusable food that rots on the way to the market.

You can make a huge difference in saving the world simply by having a small vegetable garden, either indoors in pots, or a small patch outside. You can dig or plot, or just plant some things in your flower-beds instead of flowers. It's easier than you think. Once you get everything set up, it only requires a few minutes a day of TLC and you'll see amazing results. Some easy things to get started with are tomatoes, green onions and herbs.

Wrap Gifts Creatively

newspaper-gift-wrapping.jpgMost people have more gift bags, newspapers, plastic bags or nice paper than they know what to do with. Instead of buying wrapping paper, just use some of this stuff that already have around the house. Your friends and family won't mind!

Walk instead of drive

It will improve your health and use much less energy

jogging, running, helping the world, helping the environmentDriving cars uses up a lot of energy. But often, we drive when it's nice outside and where we're going actually isn't that far. If it's under a 30 minute walk, we should be walking! For example, if you need to go the library, video store or pick up a couple of groceries, why not walk call it your exercise for the day instead of going to the gym?

Or, if you drive to the gym, why not run or jog there instead of doing cardio at the gym. it will save you time and help the world too!

Download Newspapers, Books, Videos, and Music on your computer, Ipad or Kindle

downloading, downloading music, downloading moviesDo you still buy physical newspapers, Books, Music or DVD's? It's so easy to buy or download online, or subscribe to a newspaper online if you have internet at home, there's really no excuse not to. It doesn't take up any paper, plastic or metals to use the online versions, and no energy to get the stuff to a store. And, I would argue that it's actually cheaper and easier to do it the online way.

Plant some fruit trees in your yard to help save the world

apple-tree.jpgThis is something you can do for the long-term. It requires a lot of energy and pesticide to produce fruit. Help save the earth by producing your own for yourself, family and friends. Plant an apple, or cherry tree and you'll be amazed at the harvest you'll be getting in 10 years. You can even can, or freeze the extras to sustain yourself over the winter. As a bonus, trees help keep your house cool in the summer by providing shade so you don't need to turn on that air-con.

Water: just drink from the tap

(if you live in a place that it's safe to do so)

plastic water bottle, water bottle, helping the environmentMost countries have tap water that is drinkable. It's often pure laziness that makes us reach for a bottle of water, as opposed to putting a jug in the fridge. But, all that plastic is TERRIBLE for the environment, and it also costs you a lot of money. It just doesn't make any sense. If the water in your area doesn't taste good, try using a Brita filter jug. The filter costs a bit of money, but lasts for months. And there is hardly any waste, so the environment is happy and so is your pocketbook. All those plastic bottles add up fast.

Plus, isn't it easier just to fill up a jug at your tap than to go out and buy all those bottles and have to deal with garbage after?

Wear Clothes until they're worn out

clothes shopping, shopping, helping the environment, thrift storeI know that everyone loves shopping and having the newest, latest trends but most people have a closet-full of old clothes that they never wear. Even if they're a bit out of fashion, why not try wearing them around the house or on weekends when no one really sees you. And, by mixing and matching what you already have you can often create whole new outfits. Less clothes mean less resources that you will consume. And the less resources you consume, the happier our World will be. If you have way too many clothes already, why not try giving some of them away to a thrift store for other people to take advantage of? And, if you truly don't have enough clothes and need some more, try looking at a thrift store before you go shopping for new clothes. You can often find great stuff for cheap.

Everyone saves money and makes the world a happy place! Plus, shopping takes so much energy, so not shopping is actually the lazy person's way.

Let your yard go wild!

cutting the grass, cut the grass, grass, watering the grassYou really don't have to mow your lawn. In fact, that's what all the true lazy people are doing these days! It's fine to just let it grow wild and all the natural plants to do their own thing. Don't worry about your neighbors. If you want it to look really nice, just dig up the grass and plant some wildflowers or other natural plants that you don't have to look after. All that fertilizer, energy to mow the grass and water to keep it looking green are very hard on the environment. Plus hard on your pocketbook and the world.

If you do insist on having grass, only mow it's once every 2 weeks. It's actually much healthier if you leave it long and won't require watering this way.

Take a Shower Instead of a Bath to Convserve Water

shower.jpgBaths use at least twice as much water as showers do. So, try to eliminate or cut back on the amount that you take. Perhaps treat yourself to it once/week instead of making it a daily thing?

Don't eat meat everyday to help the world

vegetarian-meal.jpgIt's very simple to cook vegetarian meals. It's good for your body, since most of us get way more protein than we need. It's also good for the Earth since meat production is very hard on the environment. Some ideas that I have are omelets and toast, beans on toast, stir-fried rice, nachos and cheese with beans, tofu stif-fry and vegetarian chili.

I like your idea of the brick in the toilet, granted I don't have that kind of toilet... but it's pretty good.
My lazy way to save the world is that I: vermiculture compost, use public transit and walk (I don't drive unless I rent a "car-share" vehicle, I bike, recycle, live in a small space, use organic cleaners, etc

Fantastic lens! I never really thought about the lawn thing... of course, that's because I rent. But good to know that my plan to go wild and plant wildflowers like you mentioned has a better reason than simply "I'm lazy and I don't want to mow" :)

Well, my hubby never remembers to flush the toilet. I'll have to remember that he's helping to save the world before I yell at him next time! This is great. Lots of great ideas.
