Organized Christmas: How to Decorate
Holiday Decorating Made Easy
Everyone loves Christmas. There's no dispute there. But depending on your responsibilities, you may be spending the holidays getting more cozy with the broom and decorating paper than with the cookies and fireplace. People love Christmas parties, but they hate setting them up! In this lens, I offer some easy decorating tips that are both light on the wallet and leave your home looking spectacular. A well decorated home doesn't have to be filled to the brim with random ornaments bought from the store. You can build an endless assortment of of things at home to make your decor look phenomenal and sincere. Here's my list of suggestions, but as any Christmas planner knows, the options are literally endless. Share your favorite decoration idea in the comments!

Christmas Decorations Stress
No one escapes the stress of preparing for Christmas.
Use Nature For Inspiration
- There are great Christmas decorations just sitting in your backyard. Just go out branch hunting! Find nice, short ones, the goal here is to bring a taste of nature into your living room without it seeming out of place. For the next step, we're going to spray paint them. I find that gold or silver spices up the room. When you're done deciding on the color combination, put them in a festive vase and you've got great homemade décor! Try dangling ornaments or some bows to make them even more catchy.
- Put this same decorating theme to work on your chandelier by draping the arms with an evergreen garland or some mistletoe.
- Make the room look more natural by pairing your candles with berries, leaves, or evergreen branches. Keep the candles in separate holders though, this is IMPORTANT! (Burned down house = bad holiday) Another trick is to pile artificial snow on the tabletop, a platter, or mantel with your glass ornaments or other crystal holders. The combination of the snow and glass really makes a dramatic effect that your guests will love.
- Upgrade your wreath by adding small ornaments, wrapped candy, flowers, or children's toys. The options are endless and any addition gives the wreath a great custom look.

What did you use? Is there anything that works really well? Is there anything that should be avoided?

Have A Color Plan
- Stick to two or three colors. This simple piece of advice will make your decorating look much more professional. Go to the store before you start putting anything up and decide on a palette of colors. Having a set color scheme makes decorating much more organized.
- Another way to add some wall artwork is to find a picture of a holiday scene, or just a collection of some holiday colors and frame it. Hang the picture up anywhere you want, and it instantly upgrades the décor.
- Take red and green towels and set them in alternating patterns in your bathrooms. If you have different sized towels, stack them up and wrap a ribbon around all of them to make a gift wrapped towel package! Guests love this subtle touch.

- Find a large black canvas. Cut up long strips of green, silver, red, and white construction paper (each one should be about 6 to 8 inches). Paste the strips onto the canvas in a messy arrangement that leaves just a trace of black background. If you're going for the modern art look, the more disorganized the better. Structured patterns works great if the furniture in the room is more angular.

Christmas Decorations From the Store
You can find great stuff at the store too, but you have to know where and when to look. Depending on what time of year you're reading this lens, there could be huge sales going on for out of season merchandise. Here are some of my favorite ornaments. Click on whatever one looks good!
Christmas decorations Great site with some really unique pieces. They have sales for most of the year. Except during, you know, Christmas.
More Christmas Home Decor Tips
- Your guests might be contributing to your parties in more ways than just their company. Christmas cards give the room a warm personal feeling, and give guests all kind of laughs. Take your collection of cards, punch holes in them so that you can tie them together with a long piece of twine, and hang up the two ends over long hallway or the front corners of your mantel.

- The dining table is one of the biggest worries of any Christmas decorator. To spice things up a little, ditch the flowers and build a gingerbread village instead! Sprinkle faux snow over the center of the table, and then place the house, people, shops, and any other gingerbread decorations to bring the table to life. If you've worried about people munching away at the little people (it's going to happen) then making the same village out of ceramics is also a great decorative option.

- Upgrade your wreath by adding small ornaments, wrapped candy, flowers, or children's toys. The options are endless and any addition gives the wreath a great custom, old fashioned look. For another simple trick, glue some decorative paper along the bottom of lamp shades or arrange some decorations around the bottom of lamps.
- Or even make your own wreath by collection whatever greenery you can find outside. Any collection of twigs will do. Wring them around until you get them arranged in the wreath shape and then tie them together with string or fishing line. Laying the wreath down and setting a candle in the middle will dry out the twigs, making it easier to hang decorations or paint, if you wish.

Better Safe Than Sorry!
- Always check the Christmas lights before you plug them into the tree. This takes 5 minutes to do, and it has the potential to save you 5 hours. Nothing is worse than spending your entire afternoon setting up the perfect decoration scheme and finding out that the lights don't turn on.
- We all know that a lit fireplace is the center of any storybook Christmas. We also know that nothing warms up the room faster than all that firewood and gas. Put some lit pillar candles in the fireplace without turning anything else on and you've got the same great look without any unwanted extra heat.

- Similarly, battery powered candle lights might also be a good idea if your house if full of kids or pets. These have the same warm look, but don't give you any unnecessary risk.
