I save my brown paper bags from takeout and I put my kitchen scraps in them and then directly into the freezer. Then I can just dump the whole bag into my composter without having to use a plastic bag. That's my lazy girl tip.

This is a very thorough lens. I earned a lot. Thank you.

just starting to compost dont want to spend alot on ready made bins. I have 2 live stock oval water troughs that are sort of rotten on bottom any suggestions on what type materials to use to try to patch bottoms or can i just set them on the ground as they are.

I've hear about compost tea but never made any. I'm going to take your advice and give it a try this summer. Great job on the lens...pretty darn good for a lazy composter!

i was wondering if starches are good to compost?
  • AllThingsMichigan Aug 17, 2011 @ 5:49 pm | delete
Yes, we put starches such as potato peelings, potatoes that have sprouted, and corn cobs in our compost pile. Just don't put things like corn tortillas, breads, cake, or any other grain material - you will attract rodents.

A lot of university extension programs have good information about composting, but not usually relevant for the average person. Good stuff...I wish I had known what not to put in when I made my first compost heap...
  • TheresaMarkham Apr 20, 2011 @ 3:06 am | delete
I love my stainless steel countertop canister w/charcoal filters. Easy to fill, easy to clean, no odors, no problems. And, lightweight, so it's easy to carry to the compost pile.

I have been working on a greener and healthier lifestyle for my family and I believe composting the "lazy way" LOL will be the best way to help our raised bed garden grow. Thank you for the info.
  • simplegirl Mar 6, 2011 @ 8:24 am | delete
this is just about my speed. I am a lazy composter. I have been using a garbage bin outside with holes drilled throughout, but need to build a better site for it. thanks for the info.

  • Lynda Aug 31, 2010 @ 6:45 pm | delete
I just started composting in beginning of Aug. My hubby drilled some holes in a round trash can, and put hardware on so I can secure the lid tightly. Once a week or so, I roll the can around a bit in the yard. so far, it's looking good. I have not tried to avoid putting veggie or fruit seeds in with my kitchen scraps, so I wonder if some stuff will sprout up! Somehow, it is rewarding, and makes me feel like I am giving back to the earth, instead of contributing to landfills. I can't wait to spead my first canful, probably by end of 1st week in Sept. to help my poor, deprived trees.
  • vallain Jun 28, 2010 @ 9:39 am | delete
I used to compost and it was wonderful for the garden. The rotating bins appeal to me. I should get back to doing this.

Will it help my veggie garden to spray the compost tea on it?As they do with Miracle grow spray.thanks very much.
  • carredsal Jan 28, 2010 @ 10:57 am | delete
Great information! My compost is just in a pile. The pallets are a great idea.
  • EelKat Dec 7, 2009 @ 2:20 am | delete
my compost bin is just like yours! pallets and posts - every year we fill the bottom of it with a layer of seaweed/kelp about 2 feet deep, (we live on a beach, so it washes up by the truckloads after a storm) than add the regular compost stuff on top of that.

Great lens (I learned about it from Clouda9's blog). I have a tumbler but once it's full I have to wait a while before emptying. Your instructions do make it seem easy!

You got me thinking after I read this lens...just had to highlight it on my blog (http://squidreport.crabbysbeach.com/blogs/the-simple-brilliance-of-dirt/) If you'd like to add the badge from the blog on this lens it's on the left menu.

Just super! Your compost bin looks like ours...and to think I was embarrassed by the 'homemadeish' design. You give us great information on this lens with passion and pics! Right on.

Great guide to making compost - didn't know you couldn't add dairy or meat though. You can add egg-shells: adds some useful calcium to the mix.

Love this lens! Not just a long list of stuff to buy, but photos & words of wisdom from your own experiences! I love composting & gardening, & have been doing both for about 10 years. Composting & recycling are practically obsessions with me! I gave this lens 5 stars & saved it to my favorites. When I finish my recycling lens, I will roll this one over! Congrats on your new baby! Any photos of baby in the garden?? :-)
