These programs sound tempting but take them for what they are, money games or "gifting programs" that will eventually lose interest or be shut down because of lack of having a viable consumable product.
If you want to have a shot at earning a long term residual income than I recommend checking out the product and make sure it checks off as something you as well as other marketers and potential customers would be interested in.

Although these strategies can sometimes work they can be costly as well as not considered a viable way to actually market a home business opportunity.

Make sure you do your investigating with an open mind though. The Internet is like the Wild West, meaning that anyone can say anything about anyone else with little repercussions. Take several sources in and then make a decision based on a wide variety of input and information.

For example if you start a home based business that costs you $50 a month in operating costs and $25 a month in basic marketing and advertising that business would cost you $900 over a one year period. If your goal is to make an extra $8K or profit your first year then you need to figure out what it will take for you to do so and if that is within your reach.
