- The posh hotel that flourished during the '30s and '40s on a bluff overlooking the Pacific fell into disuse after Interstate 5 bypassed the area. Purchased by the Lutheran Services of San Diego in the early '50s, the hotel was converted into a retirement community. But subsequent seismic requirements led to the decision to demolish the old building and replace it with a modern facility, while still retaining the distinctive early California look, with red tile roofs and arched windows.

Even San Diego Winter Vistas are Awesome
San Diego is a world class city with weather to match. The city boasts the "Old City" preserved section, the marvelous waterfront, downtown skyscrapers of commerce, great parks, and the the Naval Base San Diego - the reason why my uncle was in town to meet his future bride at a USO Dance back in the '40s, along with other military bases. San Diego boats the deepwater port and the West Coast's major submarine and ship building yards. A tour around the city will fill you with memories and ideas for your next itinerary.

University of California San Diego Library
This fine example of Brutalist architecture is named for Dr. Seuss. He's hardly known for brutalism in his stories and rhymes, but that is the category of the building at UCSD named for him.
Brutalism, as a term in architecture, actually refers to the use of "raw concrete" - Le Corbusier's term poured into the board forms. This process leaves the tell-tale marks of the wooden boards, complete with wood veins, knots and bumps. British architects Alison and Peter Smithson were the first to attach this term to the style of building that employs the process, using both the negative marks of the forms and the masses of concrete to mark the building.
Among others, I attended CWU, and for a time lived across the lane from the Psychology Building, which resembles the Barco Law Building at the University of Pittsburg School of Law //en.wikipedia.org. Both of these buildings use the "raw concrete" method of implementation of the marks from the pouring board forms into the architecture. Myself, I would call this Futuristic!
