But, if you are new, how do you know what patterns you can handle while still producing a good product? Here are some suggestions to get you started.
How to Spot Easy Quilt Patterns
How can you spot easy quilt patterns from the tons of individual patterns you find at the quilt store? After all, the patterns may claim that they are quick quilts, but how can you really know? The following features are almost universal in the quilt instructions of easy quilt patterns.
1.Somewhere in the quilt instructions are the words "easy" or "beginners."
Usually beginner quilt patterns are easy and straight forward. The purpose of these patterns is to encourage you to quilt. They are especially designed to give new quilters confidence. Therefore, they will be easy and quick.
It also helps if they are patterns used to teach teenagers how to quilt. Teenagers will want something that looks good, but that is also easy to sew.
2.Rotary Cut Quilts
If the quilt instructions contain rotary cutter directions, you almost always have a winner. That means you should be able to cut out the shapes using a rotary cutter and ruler - the most time saving tools for quilters ever invented.
Stay away from template quilts if you want something quick. All that cutting of small pieces increases the chance of you having an unfinished project on your hands.
3.Strip-Piecing Techniques
Another thing to look for in the quilt instructions is if they contain strip-piecing techniques. Strip piecing is kind of like the assembly line method of quilting. You only have to know how to sew a somewhat straight line and you can get beautiful results. Which brings us to:
4.Squares
Stick with the straight lines of squares and rectangles. They lend themselves to quick-piecing techniques. If you start looking at beginner quilt patterns books, you will notice that most of them are squares.
5.Big Blocks
You will want to make sure that your block measures at least 12 inch square. The larger the blocks, the less blocks you have to piece before you have enough for a quilt.
Easy quilt patterns are actually easy to spot. Just make sure that the quilt instructions feature strip piecing techniques, big blocks and have rotary cutter instructions. You will be able to create your own stash of fast-piecing, beginner quilt patterns in no time at all.

- Loved the tutorial on making pinwheels. As a beginning quilter, I've been afraid to try them, but now I think that I might give it a "whirl".
