EATING TIPS

Eat more fiber, pick foods with low glycemic index, avoid trans fats, make sure to get enough omega fatty acids, fill up on complex carbohydrates and so on and so on and so on. Truth is, unless you are really into nutrition, this sounds too complicated. Chances are, you will never take the time to learn it all. Then how do I eat, when do I eat, what do I eat, who do I eat with? Follow these fun and easy to remember tips to loose extra weight and develop better eating habits.

Serve your main course on salad plates.

People tend to eat less when they eat from a smaller plate, yes, even when they go for seconds.

Feeling Blue?

While you are picking out smaller plates you might as well buy it in the shades of blue.

Color blue functions as an appetite suppressant, quite opposite to orange and golden tones, which give your appetite another boost. Why did you think so many restaurants pick orange, red and yellow for their interiors? Now if you think of it, you may want to repaint your kitchen too.

Eat often.

Smaller meals eaten more frequently provide your body with a steady flow of energy while when eating just a few big meals a day your body uses whatever it needs at the moment and stores the rest as fat.

Don't skip a meal.

While skipping a meal will reduce your calorie intake for that hour, it will leave you much hungrier later on. Not only are you likely to overeat to compensate, but you'll often make bad choices to fill the gap: a cereal bar is not as healthy as a bowl of cereal or as filling, leading you to 'need' something extra for lunch. Irregular eating habits also disrupt your body's metabolism, which makes it harder to lose weight in the first place.

Do not wait to eat until you are starving.

If you wait too long you will eat way more than if you allow yourself a little snack in between meals.

Eat foods high in fiber.

Fiber slows down the break down of sugars in your body allowing the energy from food to be used over longer periods of time instead of going to your blood stream instantly. You feel full longer and will burn these calories instead of letting them build a house and home on your hips.

Eat seasonally.

Eating seasonally means enjoying the ripest and freshest food at the height of its natural harvest time. For instance, eat lots of apples in fall when they are in season. Asparagus is freshest in spring. Changing up your menu seasonally keeps your metabolism on the fast track. Eating foods grown locally and in season ensures the shortest distance from the farm to your plate. It also means less preservatives and it's better for the planet and it supports your local farmer. It's the green way of thinking.

Do not deprive yourself - plan to indulge instead.

Include a little treat in every day. Emphasis on "little" - keep your treat under 150 calories. It will teach you self control and yes, it will make you feel good. What if your favorite chocolate dessert packs a whopping 450 calories?? Eat 1/3 of it and this is how you do it: remove 2/3 and send it back with the waiter, or put it away in the farthest corner in the fridge and once it's just you and the lucky 1/3, indulge. We all know what can happen when the rest of it is right there, waving at you and calling your name.

When that hunger suddenly strikes, drink a glass of water.

Most of us do not get enough H2O and often reach for food instead. As far as weight loss is concerned, water also encourages proper kidney function and increases the efficiency of the liver's fat burning capabilities. Done with that glass? Now eat!

Eat only when you hear your stomach growling.

It's stunning how often we eat out of boredom, nervousness, habit, or frustration - so often, in fact, that many of us have actually forgotten what physical hunger feels like. Next time, wait until your stomach is growling before you reach for food. If you're hankering for a specific food, it's probably a craving, not hunger. If you'd eat anything you could get your hands on, chances are you're truly hungry.

Do not ever starve yourself.

Your body will go into emergency mode. Who knows if there is any food coming ever again? Instead of burning fat your body will attack protein in your muscles. Even after starting to eat again your body will continue to be in starvation mode for 2 more weeks. Starve yourself and you'll be weeping as you watch the pounds pack on!!!

Put out a vegetable platter.

A body of research out of Pennsylvania State University finds that eating water-rich foods such as zucchini, tomatoes, and cucumbers during meals reduces your overall calorie consumption. Other water-rich foods include soups and salads. You won't get the same benefits by just drinking your water, though. Because the body processes hunger and thirst through different mechanisms, it simply doesn't register a sense of fullness with water (or soda, tea, coffee, or juice).

Switch to ordinary coffee.

Fancy coffee drinks often pack several hundred calories, thanks to whole milk, whipped cream, sugar, and sugary syrups. A cup of regular coffee with skim milk has just a small fraction of those calories. And when brewed with good beans, it tastes just as great.

Bring back family dinners.

Eating with your significant other or your family, and using table time for talking in between chewing, can help cut down on calories - and help with bonding as a bonus.

Stick a fork in it!

Order your dressing on the side and then stick a fork in it %u2014 not your salad.

The small amount of dressing that clings to the tines of the fork are plenty for the forkful of salad you then pick up.

Cut the calories.

Weed out calories you've been overlooking: spreads, dressings, sauces, condiments, drinks, and snacks. These calories count, whether or not you've been counting them, and could make the difference between weight gain and loss.
