Reasons Why You Should Eat More Veggies

Reasons Why Vegetables Benefit More than Just the Human Body, but the Environment, too!

The vegetarian lifestyle has more benefits than just for the human body. It's also very beneficial for the environment! Benefits like potentially preventing cancer by through intake of antioxidants (found in many fruits), or boosting the body's immune system through consumption of vitamins found in fruit and veggies, have been well documented.

Besides the personal benefits, eating veggies as opposed to meat has a number of benefits for the environment.
Here are a few of those benefits...

Reasons Why Veggies are a Greener Choice

Vegetables don't use the energy that meat does!

-Vegetables from start to finish use less energy. egetables are lighter in weight, don't require feeding (like live animals do), and can be stacked much more efficiently for transport than livestock.

-Buying local saves even more transport energy. Transporting vegetables from a farm in your local area opposed to a farm halfway across the country will result in less energy consumed, and a fresher product from less transit time.

Growing your own veggies can cut down on more than just your grocery bill!

Using Organic produce

can also have a positive impact on the environment. USDA Organic foods use less pesticide, so animals won't ingest these toxic substances, plus they won't leak into our waterways.

Veggies use less energy in transportation than livestock.

Another benefit of growing your own veggies:

A financial benefit! People love fresh produce. Selling your excess produce can supplement your income during the warmer months of the year. These road side stands are always busy and sell out!

More Reasons to Eat Veggies!

Buy local, cut down on pollution, and have a tasty vegetarian meal!

-Growing your own vegetables in your backyard, deck, porch or window, like buying local, will enormously slash the amount of energy consumed to get the food to your plate. If it's in your backyard, your cutting out that transportation for you to go to the store, for the vegetable to get to you, and potentially pesticide use (and ingestion).

-Livestock are responsible for 28% of global methane emissions, which greatly speeds up global warming. Vegetables don't create this massive amount of methane emissions that destroy the atmosphere. Opting for vegetables instead of meat can reduce the overall production of livestock.

-Vegetables do not require excessive preperation before being sold. With livestock, there's the added process of slaughter, preparing the meat, cutting the meat at grocery store/butcher shops, using packaging to wrap the meat, and cooking the meat (which uses energy). Vegetables can be consumed raw in most cases with no cooking. In fact, the benefits of raw vegetables also have a positive impact on the body.

Well, I just had brussels sprouts for dinner the other night -- that was my dinner ... and the left over BS went into my lunch Italian Wedding soup. So, I love connecting with vegetables as much as possible.

since my dad had retired from work, he's been busy planting all sorts of veggies in our backyard, and there are really a lot of benefits from it, we can save money, time and we can also be assured that there are no unwanted chemicals in thge food that we are eating.

A news program reporting on Michelle Obama's organic garden stated that 60 dollars in gardening supplies will yield 700 dollars in vegetables. Makes sense to me!
Great lens! I've rolled this to my nutritious cooking lens.

I agree with the benefits of eating locally grown produce. One example that boggles me applies though to fish. I could not believe it when I read that fish is caught off the coast of Canada, frozen, taken to China for processing and returned to Canada for sale...unbelievable!

Have you seen my lens about baby carrots and the controversy surrounding them?
