On The Move
Hiking to Your Safe-Zone or Fleeing a Disaster
If there is a disaster and you need to be on the move, it's important to have a ready supply of food for the journey. Whatever you choose, here's what you want:
Non-Perishable When disaster strikes, don't head to the fridge for eggs and celery! You need food that won't go bad in the heat of the day or cold of night.
Packable Think square, rectangular. No mini coke-bottles
High Calorie You want protein and grains to keep you on your feet all day long.
Low Sodium Salt makes you thirsty. Thirsty people drink all their water. Read the ingredients, and don't get ultra-salty foods.
No Water Needed
Personally, I like the Datrex bars for short-term, pure caloric content. It's got low sodium, and doesn't cost very much, compared to fancy camping meals. However, the camping meals were made for just that. They address portability, limited water supply, and they are pretty tasty too.
What might also work, is to get creative at your grocery. Vacuum sealed packages of tuna will be easy to carry, and so will dried fruits, trail mixes, and beef jerky. These foods have the added bonus of being familiar in an emergency. Nothing like MnMs and nuts to raise morale!

Big Food Stockpile
For the most part, stockpile non-perishable food that you actually like to eat. Go for stuff you can eat as-is.
Try to get lots of canned and dried fruits and vegetables, but hey, what's an apocalypse without mini raviolis?
It's a good idea to get a supply of rice or wheat grain, since that can really sustain you for a long time.
One thing most people don't think about is powered milk. Children need milk to grow, and it is an excellent source of calcium. If you figure out how to bake in the post-apocalyptic world, you will want it to make bread.....and chocolate pudding. (That stuff is terrible without milk.)

Seeds for Gardening
You'll Need to Replenish Your Food Supply
It's very likely that you will need a garden in an extended apocalypse. So now is a good time to start stockpiling heirloom seeds. It's important that you get heirloom, because you will be able to harvest seeds from the food you grow. If a seed isn't heirloom, there's a good chance that the plant will produce sterile seeds, or even no seeds!
Some companies produce seed "vaults," which contain a variety. This is great, because eating a wide array of vegetables will help make sure that your family gets all the vitamins and minerals that they need.
Keep in mind a "staple" food source. Lettuce and carrots are tasty, but they just don't have many calories. The foods you will want to live on might be:
Potatoes These are probably the easiest staple. They grow almost anywhere, store easily, and are high in calories. They don't have a lot of those nice vitamins and amino acids, but they will keep you alive.
Beans High in protein, beans are a must if you don't have any animal protein at your disposal.
Corn You need a bit of space to grow corn, but it has the benefits of grains and a lot more versatility. You can eat it right off the cob, or grind into flour to make bread.
Grains Wheat and barley take a lot of work to process into bread, but you'll have plenty of time for that after the apocalypse, right?
I recommend starting with a "vault," and then build on it. Look around the garden section at your hardware store or your local farmers market. The best place to find heirloom seeds is right in your hometown, where they grow best.

Vitamins and Minerals
It's a good idea to store several years worth of multivitamins. If you live next to a twinkie factory, and that's your go-to food source for the rest of your life, a multivitamin will keep you from getting scurvy or anything nasty.
