Welcome

Welcome to my vegetarian lens. Over the coming months I'll be adding more links to the best of the veggie net. If you know of a good site you'd like added please let me know.

My Recipe for Vegetarian Stovies

Stovies are a Scottish dish traditionally made from beef and potatoes. This is my veggie version which is a great comforting winter dish.

Veggie Stovies

8oz Quorn chunks or other meat substitute.
5 large potatoes partially boiled and sliced
2 onions sliced into thin strips or rings
A half tablespoon of Marmite (yeast extract)
Three quarters of a pint of weak vegetable stock (or to taste)
Salt and Pepper
1 heaped tablespoon of butter or vegetarian margarine.

1. Fry the onions in the butter add the Quorn, Marmite, and salt and pepper.

2. Cover with the sliced potato and pour over half the stock. Add the rest of the stock gradually depending on how moist you like your stovies.

3. Simmer on the hob for about half an hour over a medium heat.

4. Serve hot with a good bread to mop up the juices.

*You can also make this with any left over veg you have -mushrooms work really well.*

Trampo

My Version Of Spanish Salad

This makes a fantastic side dish with a tapas style meal or a light main meal served alongside a good bread.

2lbs Tomatoes
1 Bell Pepper diced (I prefer to use yellow, orange or green for contrast but you can use whatever colour you like)
15-20 Olives stoned and chopped
1 Large mild white onion chopped.
5 tbsp of good quality extra virgin olive oil.
Freshly ground black pepper to taste

Place all the ingredients in a bowl and toss in the olive oil. I like to use garlic infused olive oil for this recipe though this is optional. If you really hate olives leave them out and replace with some fresh ground sea salt. Another variation is to add freshly chopped herbs or mix with cooked pulses for a bean salad. This is a really flexible recipe so feel free to adapt it to your needs.

Go Vegetarian!

The ethics of eating meat is an argument that is filled with many points of debate But whether people agree with eating meat or not, there's no denying that farm animals on factory farms and slaughterhouses suffer and are victims of some very upsetting abuses towards them. The decision to be vegetarian is a personal choice in the world today by people and I wont force anybody to become vegetarian or hate if you if you aren't. But part of my role as an advocate of animal rights and welfare is to inform people of the things that happen to animals. I like many people just had no idea about what happens to these farm animals in the process of raising and killing them for food and because I found out, I decided to become vegan as a result. But one thing that makes me laugh is people who assume vegetarians and vegans are somehow weak hippies who look like death, have no energy, would blow over in a strong breeze, aren't able to pick up a bowling ball or don't wanna be friends with meat eaters, when this isn't the case at all! You can be very fit and healthy on a vegetarian or vegan diet. I even worked at a meat storage place as a vegan once because I needed some quick cash, and I have lots of meat eating friends. I listen to heavy metal, love playing sport and am fit and healthy. But while we do kill animals for food, it's important that we do it with the highest code of ethics as possible and as humanely as possible, whilst we educate people as to where their food comes from; and I know and understand the difference between animal rights and animal welfare concerns. So if you do eat meat, then please consider making compassionate food choices and support organic free range farming such as buying free range eggs from the grocery store. It really is just a case of 'out of sight out of mind' for so many people. But if slaughterhouses did daily tours many people would be vegetarians / vegans instantly, and one life doesn't have to end in order for yours to continue. For more information on vegetarianism and how adopting a cruelty free lifestyle not only benefits you, the earth, and most importantly the terrific animals. Please visit my blog on my profile. The Facts

Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes meat (including game and slaughter by-products), fish (including shellfish and other sea animals) and poultry.

There are several variants of the diet, some of which also exclude eggs and/or some products produced from animal labour such as dairy products and honey.

A vegan diet is a form of vegetarianism which excludes all animal products from the diet, such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs and honey. Strict veganism also excludes use of animal products for attire and adornment, whether or not the production has directly involved the actual death of an animal, such as wool, silk, leather, and fur. [http://www.thefreedictionary.com/vegan dictionary definition of 'Vegan']

Most vegetarians consume dairy products, and many eat eggs. Lacto-vegetarianism includes dairy products but excludes eggs, ovo-vegetarianism includes eggs but not dairy, and lacto-ovo-vegetarianism includes both eggs and dairy products.

Semi-vegetarianism consists of a diet largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish and sometimes even poultry, as well as dairy products and eggs. The association of semi-vegetarianism with vegetarianism in popular vernacular, particularly pescetarianism (also called pesco-vegetarianism and described as a "vegetarian" diet that includes fish defines "vegetarian" (noun) as "A person who on principle abstains from animal food; esp. one who avoids meat but will consume dairy produce and eggs and sometimes also fish (cf. VEGAN noun)."

has the same definition.

Merriam-Webster defines "Pescetarian" as a vegetarian whose diet includes fish. ), has led to what vegetarian groups cite as improper categorisation of these diets as vegetarian. The Vegetarian Society, which initiated popular usage of the term vegetarian as early as 1847, condemns the association of semi-vegetarian diets as valid vegetarianism; the organisation points out that the consumption of fish is not vegetarian."VEGETARIANS DO NOT EAT FISH!" The "fish campaign" webpage of the Vegetarian Society

The reasons for choosing vegetarianism may be related to morality, religion, culture, ethics, aesthetics, environment, society, economy, politics, taste, or health. A generic term for both vegetarianism and veganism, as well as for similar diets, is "plant-based diets".IPBN Properly planned vegetarian diets have been found to satisfy the nutritional needs for all stages of life, and large-scale studies have shown vegetarianism to significantly lower risks of cancer, ischaemic heart disease, and other diseases.

Exploring Vegetarianism

Guest Article by Rebecca Bennett

Most people who are interested in a pure 100% vegetarian lifestyle do so for many reasons. These may include reducing suffering, improving one's health, or environmental issues.

Regardless of why one explores an animal-friendly lifestyle these choices could be the most important things one can do to make that difference in the world. By removing things like meat, eggs and dairy from ones life, you can make a statement against cruelty to animals, better health and helping to heal the planet and it's environmental issues. As supporting the production of vegan (100% vegetarian) products you are supporting a much more sustainable future, therefore these decisions send a message to others and help society become aware of a more humane way of living peacefully and lightly.

There are many pure vegetarian foods and products on offer across the globe these days. Shopping has become a way of showing one's compassion and awareness for many vegetarians. And yes you don't have to go without if you do not consume animal by-products.

Here's just a sample list of some of the great many foods on offer for you:

Veggie Burgers, Veggie Hot Dogs or Sausages, Tofurky, Vegan Mince, Veggie Bacon, Almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, oat and potato milks (some contain sweeteners or come in flavored options and most vegan milks are fortified with calcium and vitamins D & B12 as well). Non-dairy Ice Creams, sorbets and desserts, egg replacers, tofu, seitan, soy margarine, tempeh, TVP (texturized vegetable protein), soy cheeses including sour, creamed and whipped creams. And we can't forget about the many fruits, grains, nuts, seeds and vegetables to choose from as well.

So as you can see there is an abundance of food to choose from. And as stated by many vegetarians across the Globe, what we do is as important as what we don't do. Therefore living with compassion and exploring the vegetarian way of life could and most probably will change your life for the better.
