Hi, there is a great new free classified ads site http://www.adsere.com/ very simple to use and uncluttered from 3rd party advertising. They are 100% free to use and you can use video, pics and audio to enrich your ads - worth a peek :-)

This is a really good article with lots of interesting and useful info on how to get round eBay's draconian policies (yes, we just got banned for spurious reasons!). I'll definitely be looking at Amazon for starters, then see how it goes from there. But the link to your website is broken (403 error); just though you'd like to know :)

I've been going well on buzzmart.com and got a few sales along with other alternatives i am on. I guess the best is to sign up to as many as possible and wait till the fish eats the bait.

Thanks for the low down on Ebay. I listed two small items recently just to drive traffic to my new website. Sheesh! Will corporate American ever learn to respect the American worker? I will wait until the end of the week and probably move on. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers!

Hi CoachBrown and thank you for your comment. I understand that Amazon doesn't work for everyone, which is why I will be expanding this lens in 2012 to encompass many ideas to run a business online.

One idea right now is to check out the MySilentTeam website. They have many money making ideas to try. I recommend them highly. One of the best things to do this year is getting your own website going and learning how to promote it. This puts you in the driver's seat instead of a third party website. Check out the http://blog.auctionbytes.com blog for more ideas and places to sell too. Good luck!

I'm here because like so many others I just lost my business at eBay for the same reasons some of you had, but Amazon is not an option for me. I live in a state that requires Amazon to report my sales and collect sales taxes on their behalf, so rather than accept this state-mandate Amazon restricts sellers from my state. I love Amazon but still need an alternative - and based on what I'm seeing I'm feeling like a bottom feeder; nothing looks good.

eBay was my outlet to selling items until they suspended my account 30 seconds after I posted 4 brand new with tags T-shirts, I had to wait as I work odd hours and had been on late that night, I call the next day as eBay had absolutely NO way to contact any other way than by phone to resolve this problem that eBay had. The conversation went with no remorse as eBay gave me very vague details saying how "they did not feel comfortable with listing my items on their site and you will have to find a different way to sell your items, and your account will stay suspended!" I replied, "So what is the difference between my T-shirts with tags compared to all of the other shirts already listed?" I got the same response and hung up! I was appalled with this service I was getting for selling T-shirts that altogether equaled under $75! I started using: www/squidoo.com/start-using-yardsellr and have been very pleased! The only thing keeping eBay alive is their massive traffic, but backed by poor customer service is going to ruin them, Yardsellr.com uses Facebook and the two interact quite well, get the traffic from FB and eBay will sink!

I sell on ebay sporadically. One of their newest changes (when they started to charge their fee on shipping costs in addition to the price of the item "to keep shipping costs low") actually drives costs up because you have the cover the extra fees you have to pay. I haven't checked out any alternatives because I am just selling junk from around my house.

I had a friend who also moved from ebay to Amazon because of a newly minted rule that they couldn't sell their items anymore on ebay. Love those new rules!

I still use eBay and Amazon to sell but I'm selling hard good not e-books. I mostly deal in collectibles, particularly hardcore and punk vinyl records. I've tried other sites but it seems the market is at eBay. BUT I do slip a 10% discount coupon in with every shipment and have been leading a lot of my return buyers over to my own website.
  • andrewsquidoo May 9, 2011 @ 5:42 pm | delete
I think everyone should check out free classified sites, but with a little caution. The reason we use eBay and Amazon isn't because they are free or paid sites, it is because of traffic. Both Amazon and eBay get a lot of traffic and this is what your product or service needs.

Unfortunately, most free classifieds sites get little traffic, and when they do get traffic it may not be the right kind. You want buyer traffic. Craigslist is a good spot for free listings, but again, please be careful because another problem with free classified sites is you are open to fraud. Yes, fraud can happen on Amazon and eBay too, but then you have big, legit companies behind you who can help you.

This is just a friendly "heads up". I do not want to discourage anyone from perusing free sites, just be cautious.

You should consider Bonanza.com when it comes to selling. There are no listing fees and the fvf is way cheaper than ebay. Meaning you keep more profit! Also ebay sellers are signing up daily with Bonanza because of the new fee changes. Sales are also great there being that Bonanza has more payment options for buyers.

useful lens. I haven't tried any eBay alternatives yet but this gives me information on where to look.

Ebay is changing the nature of its site, it wants to be a commerce site like that of Amazon, removing the online auction as its core business. This re-tooling has made sellers everything from un-easy to angry enough to leave. This change was spelled out by the CEO of eBay in a Feb 14, 2011 article in the WSJ/FBN, read it it is intereting.
If you are not a 'Top-Rated" eBay seller don't list there --you will not get as much money as the top-rated sellers, for an item, given that the item is equal. This is because your item is not shown to as many possible buyers. Find an eBay alternative, I use Ealtbay.com. It has free listings, very low final value fees, and you can take payment in any form --not just paypal.

Ebay is changing everyday and earning quite the reputation for themselves by being known as the eating your money up machine . They charge too much for fees and leave little room for a seller to grow a business. Ebay used to be alright now it's become very time consuming for those trying to make an income . People are looking for ebay alternatives and our tired of being overcharged. I haven't yet found my niche still looking for a site that will generate just as much traffic as ebay would be nice.. The problem is ebay dominates the internet world for a selling site it's hard to find a site that will make you just as much sales. I been searching the internet and I always seem to come across the same sites for alternatives and they really haven't done me any justice . I have tried many.

Those of you who are sellers out there it would be nice to share some sites that generate a lot of sales and explain what you're doing , what is working and what hasn't worked so we won't make the same mistake again.

I will keep you guys updated if I find something , I will be sure to write it in my squidoo.

    Thanks Choozes

Well, I used to buy once in a while from eBay and did not have any bad experiences at all except once when I had to pay over$ 100.00 in customs for a $ 650.00 product. From a buyer's point of view, it's a pretty good place to go. However from a selling point of view, I not a big fan. For commerical sellers it may be good becasue they can save a lot on overhead costs but regular consumers like me and everyone who has some stuff at home that he doesn't use, eBay is not worth the hassle. Most of the stuff is to be sold locally and if you post it on eBay, there are listing fees and then the commission which I try to avoid. Therefore, I mostly use free classifieds sites for my selling needs. There is craigslist, backpage and lots of others but I have just started using another classifieds site to post free ads, it's called PostAd (http://usa.postad.us). I started using it because it has a better layout and is pretty easy to use. Another reason why I preferred PostAd over any others is the feature of being able to create your own profile page which is similar to an eBay store. Since i sell my stuff locally, I turn to PostAd for my selling needs.

I used to sell on ebay but for just a short time because in the end most of my profits was eaten out by their fees. Also I couldn't source products that I could really make a decent profit from. I went into selling other people ebooks but it wasn't a success either. I'm still finding my niche. Anyway, regarding that Vendio acquisition by Alibaba, I've been watching Alibaba for a very long time. It seems it has grown into a major player in the ecommerce world. I read that they are giving away $100s in free stuff in promoting their AliExpress website. You can read more here: http://bit.ly/9oVHaA

It is interesting that I had at one time an affiliate account with Ebay. I was doing moderately well with it until I came across alternative to Ebay and became a founding member of that program. I was deleted as an affiliate for Ebay without having done anything improper. The timing was to close to having started with the other program. Probably just a coincidence, but weird.

Anyway they did me a favor in that I was able to focus on the new program and not be distracted by them. We are building a solid foundation and have an army of affiliates that are going to take the program to the world.

    Thanks for letting me share.

I have been saying for years...don't put all of your eggs in eBay's basket. eBay owns it's site, so they can do whatever they want to, and many times it will affect your business.

It is good advice to diversify. Sell as many places as you can. Amazon is a great place to sell but there are many others too. Also consider creating your own website to sell your items. It isn't that difficult to do and if you need help, it is easily found online.

    Good luck to everyone!

    Hello!
I was selling in eBay for many years. Have reached Power Seller with 100% positive feedback and one day eBay suspended my account for stupid thing, accusing that I start to list things that are not authentic.
Than, I managed to open another account and again got more then 200 sales with 100% positive and only 2 neutral feedback!
During all the this I was selling on eBay I had and have seen many things what ebay did - and now, I hate ebay.
Disrespect to a seller, dictators' regime; stupid trust and safety customer service: one guy says one thing, and next day another guy removes that listing; I am not native English speaker and was listing about 20 items a day, but when they remove my listing they don't give a chance to copy the description so I have a chance to correct it and they made me ALWAYS build the description from the scratch. For you may be it takes 5-10 min to create listing, but for me I have to use translator to look solid and not sound funny. They DICTATE YOU what to do and what not in Country "Free America": they told me that I cannot have the ID that I was using for years and they changed it!!!! I had www-mybusiness-com! Their stupid policy about pic-s makes problem to many sellers and more over even their customer service doesn't have equal answer. One says one thing, another one says absolutely different and this MADE ME F...ING SICK! Since there is a problem with pic-s that you can list, I have made a reference to original web site where people can go and see full description and pic-s, but NO, ebay again removed all those listings bcz now they have new policy that yoo CANNOT put any reference to another website that will take buyer out of ebay's page.
Disrespect, Iniquity, injustice and an arbitrariness - this is ebay in my eyes now!
What I am doing is: I am looking for ebay alternatives. I will not list websites that I am using so you don't think I promote them, but! I can tell you one thing FOR SURE: use several websites as alternative and never stick with 1 website, otherwise when they grow big they have a HUGE chances to become like ebay or may be worse! People like you and me made ebay that big, and we saw the outcome, and we don't want to feed another website and make him monster.
In all your emails put automatic signature that you have listings in such-and-such web sites, try to spread more and fast - thus you will bring those websites to become more popular and get items sold. If they are not popular, there is no sales even if listing free and o% after sales fee.
The only strongest side ebay have, that your items gets bids - bcz buyers are there!
If (let says) you and people like you remove items from ebay and put to another/other website buyer will buy from there. But again, it's something that attached to each other buyer-seller, I don't want go deep: you can list million of items in another website but there are no buyers, etc. But we have to start doing something like: START USING OTHER WEBSITES, and as I said try to have at least 2-3 different websites at the same time.

    Hey guys

There's this new startup company in Palo Alto that was started by people who were sick of the way eBay ripped off their sellers. It's a quick and easy way to sell things and market the things you're selling.

It connects to your social networking websites and shows all your friends what is being sold. The listing is also posted on the website's twitter and marketed all over the web

    Check out the site: http://yardsellr.com/C1s

    It's called "yardsellr"

Hope you guys like it. Email me anything you have to say about the site: questions, comments, feedback, anything at maryminno@yahoo.com. If you like the site, share it with your friends.

I sell my artwork on Etsy and Zibbet. Both are great so far. Etsy's more well known but Zibbet is up and coming and has a great deal going on right now for early sign-ups.

I know some people have successfully sold art and crafts on eBay but honestly that never really entered my mind as a viable place to sell new work like that. I always think of eBay as being a good place to find things like clothes, videogames, or used goods. If anyone sells art on eBay successfully, I'm interested in hearing more about it (I know it's possible!) but with the fees and everything, it makes more sense to go with a site that requires no fees whatsoever like Zibbet.
  • BigFish1 Feb 8, 2010 @ 9:48 pm | delete
I stopped using ebay as a method to sell products because of fee "squeeze" put too much load on the profit potential. I didn't think selling an item at cost and working for free made sense. There are plenty of sellers that keep busy doing this but do not make any money. Great ideas here, a good read.

I just found this site: www.gravityauction.com
It's a descending price auction site. The price starts high and drops until someone bids.

Their fees are pretty low (1.5-6%) and you apparently only pay if your item sells for over $10.

My sister also sells in ebay now she doesn't have a credit card and requested me to pay for her sellers fees. Now to my shock after a month my ebay account was gone just because i paid my sister's fees in ebay. All my hard work was gone i have over 3000 listings in ebay. I'm glad i came across your lens everything you wrote here is true.

I've now opened my independent store http://www.bodyliciousbeauty.com and i've also opened an ecrater store http://kikaystore.ecrater.com these are my new ebay alternatives.

I have been on eBay since 2005. During that time I have learned that it is not good to put all your trust in one site. I now, diversify! I use Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/shops/sandrasacre, Used Book Sells: http://www.usedbooksell.com/company-name/sandrasacre-on-usedbooksell.html, and Buy It sell It: http://sandrasacre.mybisi.com and others. I believe the best e-bay alternative is Bonanzle. It is a very cool site. It is the fastest growing site. It has no lisiting fees and the sellers are treated well. Check out Bonanzle if you are searching for another on-line seller.

Thanks for a great lens Andrew. Rated you 5 stars. Since you asked I'd like to mention another alternative place to sell and buy stuff. It's called Bonanzle - it came out of beta just this past September with approximately 10,000 listings and less than one thousand members of which I was one. Today February 21, Bonanzle.com boasts nearly 33,000 members, 1363551 items for sale in 9563 booths. Now that's growth and its steady. We typically have between 300 to 500 new members signing up daily since January. Bonanzle was named the "best eBay alternative":http://www.ecommerce-guide.com/news/news/article.php/3762231 in July by Ecommerce Guide. In January Bonanzle was "again named the best eBay alternative":http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/news/article.php/11520_3798906_4", this time by SmallBusinessComputing! Bonanzle combines an easy listing process with cutting-edge features like on-the-fly image cropping, live chat and an active social marketplace community. http://www.bonanzle.com

Great site - kept up to date as things change on eBay. Thanks all the advice!

Great 5* stuff: Haven't used eBay myself for about 18 months but used to do okay. As regards selling books with Amazon it seems they have to be the 'right' books to really profit. There are so many people selling popular books at just 1p (on Amazon UK) which means only a few pence is made on postage.

I do agree with not 'putting all your eggs in one basket', and this applies to lots of businesses including blogging. Must never get too reliant on any affiliate program, supplier etc. etc.

    Mike.

I have not considered an alternative to eBay but I might consider an addition there is a subtle difference open to ideas

I'm selling on Ebay now, every year right before Christmas and every year so much has changed, and always for the worse. I'm glad I ran across your lens, I will click through the links and take these alternatives into serious consideration. 5 Stars! Drop by my Ebay Affiliate Store Creator lens and say hello!

    I agree a fantastic lens.
I also used to sell on eBay and quite a few ebooks too, but only have a max of 10 listings now, my partner and i decide to start our own auction venue to offer people more choice and much lower fees if any fees at all, we welcome Ebook sellers as we think they are a valued part of the community. If you ever fancy checking us out its www.dynabid.org , keep up the good work Andrew :-)

Wow! I've been selleing on ebay since the year 2000. So glad to know I'm not the only one!!! Ebay's recent hike in fees... 12% to 15% on the final value fees, as well as the new unfair feedback system, the new Paypal only rule, and many other new "rules" have now taken too big a chunk of my sales. I just closed my store yesterday. I emailed ebay about the unfairness of their recent business practices and how they only want BIG business or power sellers of high dollar items. I told them I wanted my letter forwarded to Tracey Edwards. I waited the 72 hours for a response... and got a form letter as a reply!!! I was furious. I have made ebay THOUSANDS of dollars over the last 8 years, and I have spent thousands there too! NO MORE!!! Thank you for showing people that there IS an alternative to Ebay!!!

Thank you so much for this information. My hubby and I used to love selling on ebay but they have recently started conducting themselves like the mafia. I'm happy to know there are alternatives to the FEEbay thugs.

I was just browsing Squidoo and found your lens. There has been lots of alternatives out there due to all the numerous changes eBay has been coming up with. One of them being a new software that just came out this week for ebook sellers that I created a lens about. However I completely agree with you about casting your net in several places besides eBay. I too will check out your amazon ebook.

    nice!

I have been selling stuff via Amazon since 1997. I didn't join eBay until 2004, but I quickly learned that Amazon was a better place to sell stuff, so I use eBay for my buying only, while I both buy and sell on Amazon.

Nice lens, it's a real shame when a company like that lets you down. But Amazon has a good reputation in everybody's eyes I think. Hope business is now going better than ever.

actually i just now know what is ebay all around. after i read this i understand what ebay is:) 5 stars!

are you also applying the law of attraction?
  • redsgarage36 Jun 30, 2008 @ 3:00 am | delete
Thanks for posting this. I am also a person who is unhappy with eBay's new feedback policy changes and I was unhappy with eBay having a mandatory requirement to use PayPal to sell electronics, which is 85% of what I sell.

You've presented an excellent alternative, even to those who continue to sell on eBay. Most of the eBay sellers I know are also selling on the River now and are very, very pleased. I'm sure eBay is taking notes. Nice lens, and welcome to Squidoo!
