Ebay Photos - the best way to increase your ebay sales.

Ebay Photos are REALLY important.

Many Ebay buyers won't even LOOK at an auction that doesn't have a photo - and many won't look unless there's a gallery photo too.

Ebay Photos show your product off to its best advantage and make it look GOOD !

That will increase your sales.

Think about it from the buyers point of view.
They are looking for your item - so you MUST show it off well.
Too many auctions just have a photo on ebay of something dumped on a sofa or bedspread and shot with a 40 dollar cheap camera (and they just give you fuzzy photos by the way !)

You want to look professional and trustworthy -

Thats how to get buyers to buy from YOU !

Here I'll will tell you how to take and show the BEST pictures for your auction s

Bigger Photos on Ebay

You'll need a website for this ... or Flickr !

You choose the picture you want to put in your ad (this only works in the body of the ad - not in Gallery option)
Edit the html part of your ad
put the address where the picture is stored (make it on a real server somewhere or look silly !) .
Some free websites are not reliable - you NEED a reliable website.

Flickr is good - and FREE !
Try to keep the photo to a maximum of 500 pixels wide.
This looks big enough to be impressive but not too big for people to get bored while its loading !
Always save the photo as a .jpg or .gif image for fastest loading. A Quality level of around 5 is usually OK
You're not going to hang the photo on the wall -just look at it - usually for a few seconds .
Err.. that's it really !
Happy Ebaying !

I forgot to mention this ..

Ebay Photos are SMALL !

That is the regular pictures that appear alongside your ebay listing are quite small - so you want your to stand out !
First FILL THE FRAME with the subject - I was looking at gold coins on www.greatgoldcoins,com (yes I won that site too !) and I was amazed at how many people just have the coins they are trying to sell in the DISTANCE. Then they are so small you cannot see either what they are or any details (coin collectors like to look at the detail of the coin to see what condition it is in ) THis appleas to all small objects - listen to this :
THE PURPOSE OF THE PHOTO IS TO SHOW WHAT THE THING YOU ARE SELLING LOOKS LIKE !
(sorry for shouting but it is SO important.)
Distant, unsharp, fuzzy, overexposed or too dark pictures actually put people off your product.
In fact they will not even look at the rest of your ad/listing.
Ebay is a COMPETITIVE Field and with very few exceptions people are not fighting to buy your products

(I know - thats a terrible shock to you - have a cup of coffee and get over it !)

There are OTHER PEOPLE selling on EBay and they take great photos.
While I mention it - are you taking advantage of the photo listings ? Or are you just showing one picture ?
If a sales item costs over $15 it is probably worth taking and showing more pictures - people LIKE to see more views of what you are selling. It gives them CONFIDENCE of you and your products.
I sometimes sell coins - but I ALWAYS photograph both sides - because I know coin collectors and dealers awant to see there is no damage/wear to the other side of the coin - its what I would look for when buying !
Heres another useful hint -
If you want to show both sides of a coin you don't need to use 2 pictures in the listing - that would be silly on a cheap item.
Instead get a photo editing package (I use Photoshop but the Gimp is ok for doing this and its free !) take the two pictures and combine them into one wider picture. That way you show both sides for no extra cost !

Basic Product Photography

First use a PLAIN background
(could be coloured and that would stand out )-
a yellow background always gives a photo more punch.

That's the purpose of a good photo - to improve how your object is going to look.

A digital camera is a must - one with a Macro lens is even better (Macro is a way to describe closeup photography).

Because pictures don't appear very big on Ebay (but I'll tell you how to make them look bigger..)

you should limit the size you are shooting to around 500 pixels on the longest side.

This will mean your photos load quicker than anyone elses photos.

To make your photos look bigger, simply upload them to a site like Flickr.

Copy the html for the location of the picture you want to show -

With Flickr you click on the picture you want on the Flickr site, a large photo comes up.

Above that picture is a sizes button - click it.

Then choose the size you finally need.

Two boxes appear copy the text from the box that ends with .jpg
That is the one to use.
then paste that text into your Auction description and Voila ! A big picture at no additional cost to you..
(Same Thing works on SQUIDOO text areas - neat huh ?)

One essential for anyone taking a lot of photos for ebay is a LIGHT TENT.
This is (in its crudest form) a wire frame covered in translucent material such as plastic or white cheesecloth.
You can build one of these for around $10 yourself but commercial ones start at around the same price (and often come with readymade backgrounds to slip inside them) They are easier to use and you don't run out of duck tape..
Its simply a white cube that will let in light in a diffused form and give a totally white background.

This will make your picture stand out. One side has a slit vertically for you to poke the camera through.
(Put the object in first or feel really silly ..)

Where can you get a light tent ?
EBAY Of Course ! Or Amazon (see below ...)
What lighting can you use ?

Sunlight (Just take the light tent outdoors and the sun will do the rest - you can just set the camera to automatic.)

Movie Lights or Artists Daylight lamps - these work well and are pretty cheap (you can get a daylight Artists lamp to fit a desk lamp and this will do as a light source)

Flash - You can bounce a flashgun's light off the ceiling and this will give fairly directional lighting -

but you really should get a clip on flash for your camera or you'll be disappointed - built-in flashguns are really only meant for small family groups etc and don't give out much light.
If you are shooting DIGITAL photos then its ESSENTIAL to get the right flashgun for your camera.

NEVER USE A FLASHGUN FOR A FILM CAMERA ON A DIGITAL CAMERA
PRO TIP
For each photo expose a half stop each side of normal - its faster than seting up again because the exposure was a bit out !
Digital Pictures cost nothing - but save you lots of Time.

Good Cameras to take photos for eBay

I'm only suggesting 2 cameras

They are both terrific value and you will eventually need a decent but not too expensive camera.
These are the two cameras I would personally consider for eBay Photography but other makers do make excellent cameras too !

There's something about eBay that you don't know ...

It's the Silent Sales Machine
and it can revolutionise your ebay sales.

Tell me about the Silent Sales Machine

How to photograph Coins,Stamps and small objects.

For these subjects you really need a single lens reflex camera with either a close-up lens or a macro lens.
Get two pieces of 2"x1" wood and paint them matt black. You'll also need a piece of black matt card and a piece of glass about 9 " or so square.

Place the pieces of wood on the card and the glass on top of the wood. Put the coin/stamp on top of the glass. When you photograph it the coin will look as though it's floating on air. You can use flash to light the subject but its better if the light source is off camera (an extension cable helps)
Hint - if you have a number of things to photograph sort them all into subjects of the same size - this cuts down on changing setups for each object- and speeds things up a lot.
You can go in for fancier lighting (rim lighting is my favourite with a second light behind and below the subject)and this does make a difference but by following my suggestions you'll already have pictures better than 90 % of those on ebay.

How to get bigger pictures on your auction -first take the picture and resize it to the size you want it to appear on ebay. Join a photo-sharing site like FLickr and upload your pictures there.
Make a note of the url for each photo and simply paste the html into your auction. That avoids ebays size limits and you get to have your own sized photo. Much more impressive !

PRO TIP ! - A short piece of dowel (about 1/2 an inch high) will again make your subject look like its floating - just slip it under the coinor stamp but watch out for shadows !
You can also use the same setup as in this photo with a white background. That's a matter of personal preference.

Are you looking for something else to sell on ebay ?

Chances are you just walked past it !

No matter where you go ..
To a relatives house, a flea market, garage sale or car boot sale ,
You may well be walking straight past things you could sell on eBay for a HUGE profit !

Scott Foster has written an ebook on Overlooked Treasures.

BANS - Your very own eBAY Outlet

You Can Make Money from OTHER PEOPLE'S EBAY AUCTIONS !

The biggest problem an aspiring internet marketer faces is information overload which forces you into committing to too many projects / ideas at once.

You end up trying to move in different directions simultaneously when you will see much better returns if you pick one path and commit to it.

The eBay affiliate opportunity is large enough and profitable enough to warrant your focus (we have been making money from it for several years) and with BANS you have a system that you can commit to, master and profit from for years to come.

Whilst building, developing and marketing your own BANS stores you will learn and develop many skills that are transferable into other online money making ventures you may decide to pursue.

With what other program can you learn things like: installing scripts, creating professional and attractive websites, understanding niches, carrying out keyword research and SEO, establishing effective marketing channels, converting site visitors into buyers%u2026

As you dig into BANS and the eBay affiliate opportunity these are all the things that you will be doing and once learnt these skills (which can't be bought) are yours to apply to anything else you commit to online.

Visit BANS to see Actual BANS websites and don't forget - it's not just ONE Niche website - it's as many as you want to build !
I now have half a dozen BANS websites quietly ticking away.
It really is a set it up and leave it system.
Currently Ebay has given BANS uses an extra month to migrate to the eBay EPN system (from Commission Junction)
HOWEVER ! Anyone who gets into BANS now will have a huge headstart over newcomers.

There are a few tricks in getting a succesful BANS site and these are some of them:
Content.. the only way to get customers to come to your BANS website is to have original content that either you have written or hired someone to write for you.
The BANS Sytem is easy to master and a great investment. It allows you to choose a Niche Market and then sub-categorise that subject (like for instance barbequeues) and then show a website which contains pages of content and/or videos folowed by the relevant ebay listings.
The customer looks through the listings and if they click and win a bid (or buy it now) then you get a commission.
I suggest if you go in for BANS that you choose a niche that you are familiar with and can write about - a hobby, music, video games system or other interest. Then you can talk with authority about the sun=bject and people wil want to come to your site (and the search engines will want to list you as well !)This is the secret of sucess with BANS.
You do have to sign up with eBay though and you should have a website to show you are really interested in marketing.
Check out the requirements with the link below to ensure your server can handle the BANS System.
(Most can - I recommend Hostgator)
The BANS Nichestore site has an amazine range of information and utilities to help you make serioous money from BANS including the best and most helpful Forum I have seen .
BANS comes with a moneyback guarantee and is modestly priced.

eBay

The Point of it all ...

The main point of taking photos for ebay is of course ..

TO SELL YOUR PRODUCT !

THis is why you make the picture as big as possible and keep the background plain. (Take a look at a few things that people have just dumped on a bed or dressing table and the backgrounds look REALLY tacky)
WE DON'T DO TACKY DO WE ?

Of course we don't we're professionals !
Lets keep those nice backgrounds CLEAN ... just go to your local ART STORE and buy a PUTTY RUBBER (ERASER) ... this is designed to clean card or paperwithout damaging the surface - its really meant for watercolor paper so it has to be unable to damage the surface ... DON'T use an ordinry eraser. Putty erasers are only $1.50 or so - why not get two ? They are made of really soft rubber that sort of shreds rather than pulls at the paper.

Keep backgrounds plain (or if you want to get a bit fancy use a plain pastel paper or card background from an art shop.) and to give the final touch use a Template.
Templates are ready made designs with a variety of attractive graphics to give your ad a little oomph and make your ad stand out from the others.
Ebay themselves offer a good range when you write your ad and it's worth looking at those.

ALWAYS take the Gallery option and if you are selling 5 or more similar objects and your profit margin on each is over $15 then make it a featured ad - and have lots of things for sale in your shop (you DO have an ebay shop don't you ? - its a prime asset to selling things and you whould put a link to it in all of your ads.) If you use the first ad as a loss leader then you can make up with that when you offer the other 4 or more objects at an increased buy it now price that should more than compensate for the first classified type ad.
ALWAYS make your auction ads run for 10 days and preferably start them on a Thursday night so that you get coverage on two weekends (weekends are prime buying time !).This will give you maximum exposure on your ad and your shop.
The main advantage of an eBay Store is that you can list lots of BUY IT NOW items and these just remain until you close them down.
To sell an item quickly list it on a one day or three day auction. If it doesn't sell simply go to your Me Ebay and relist it.

An Example of pictures on ebay

How not to take photos !

I also run a Gold Coin Website and this has thousands of pictures of gold coins.
Most of these are by Gold Coin Dealers and the pictures are pretty good. Some however are taken too far back so you cannot see the detail or condition of the coin or are just out of focus ! Those people are just wasting their time because no coin buyer will bid on a coin that they cannot see. The purpose of the photos is to see the auction object !
Look here and you will see what I mean ..
www.greatgoldcoins.net

Amazon Hints and Tips

Quick and dirty photos..

use your scanner !

You will find that your scanner, however cheap, is really good at making photos of flat or solid objects - particularly when you are doing lots of similar sized objects.

Scanning is not limited to text - most scanners have a module for making photos (I particularly recommend the scanners from Epson and Hewlett Packard)

Set the scanning module to make photos at 500 pixels wide and 72dpi(dots per inch) and this will give excellent results similar to a digital photo.
This won't work with round 3-d objects or any that need to show depth but it will give you surprisingly good results using the Auto setting.
For full results look at the manual but if your scanner didn't come with a manual then you can download one from either of the above companies websites.

PRO TIP !
Most scanning software comes with an option of advanced mode - try setting the black and white points of your image to get the best results.
(Black is the darkest bit of the picture and white is the lightest part)

A Ringflash .. is not a sex aid

At first sight a ringlflash may look familiar - that's because many dentists and doctors use ringflashes to photograph their patiens bit & pieces !
Usually used with a Macro Lens because macro lenses get in the way fo traditional flashguns.
A Ringflash looks a bit like a glass donut (doughnut) and comes with a small power pack and conecting leads.
The main purpose is to produce SHADOWLESS closeup lighting. This is ideal for electronic compnents.ipods, coins etc that you want to sell.
A Ringflash is usually dedicated to a manufacturers camera
(see I TOLD YOU you need a digital slr camera ..now go and look at my lens on buying a digital camera !)

But there are a couple of independent makers for these. Again DO NOT TRY TO USE a ringflash meant for a film camera - these work at higher voltages than those for digital cameras and may fry your shiny new camera... They are easy to use and will save you lots of time photographing similar sized objects. Your time is worth money - you could be doing more profitable things !
