Why You Should Open an eBay Store

The reasons for opening an eBay Store vary from person to person. But to the astute eBay seller, an eBay Store is much more than another medium to make sales on the world's largest online auction site.

Rather, an eBay Store is the gateway for traffic from Internet search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc to find not only your eBay Store, but also your eBay auction listings. In case you weren't aware, all of your eBay auctions are automatically indexed into your Store framework.

Without an eBay Store, you're largely reliant on eBay to deliver traffic from the Internet to your auction listings. In order for you to bring your own potential buyers from the Internet to your listings requires using search engine optimization strategies and, of course, opening an eBay Store.

The biggest mistake many eBay Sellers make when opening a Store is the lack of planning and research that go into selecting a name for that Storefront.

Sell What Sells, NOT What's Cool

by Chris Malta & Robin Cowie

Our company publishes the Internet's
leading Database of genuine wholesale suppliers
. We list thousands of "Drop Shippers" (wholesalers who ship products, one at a time, directly to your customers; eliminating the need to stock inventory), and thousands of Light Bulk Wholesalers - Wholesale Suppliers who will sell
to you in small Bulk Quantities, while still giving you larger Bulk Quantity prices.

As a result of the information we research and publish, we get questions all the time about what products Home-based Internet Business owners should try to sell online.

I've been at this for years, and have become very successful in my Internet business. But let's face it, folks. If I knew what was going to sell well on the Internet tomorrow, next week, or next month, I wouldn't be writing this article.

RSS Technology and eBay Stores

RSS technology allows buyers to be notified when you list new items for sale on eBay by using a RSS feed reader and subscribing to your eBay Store's feed.

Although it has been around since 1997, the vast majority of eBay sellers don't understand how RSS works and more importantly how it can help them with their eBay businesses.

Actually, RSS is an effective way to get traffic to your eBay Store, so it's well worth the investment in time to learn about this technology.

So what does RSS stand for?

RSS is the acronym for "Real Simple Syndication." It's a way for you to publish (or feed) new information about your eBay listings to potential buyers on a consistent basis.

eBay Store sellers are now able to set up a "feed" that will send out a regularly updated summary of the most recently-listed items in their Store to people who subscribe to it. As you might imagine, this can be a great way for your customers to keep informed about your new listings.

If you're a Store owner who is interested in providing listings via RSS feeds, go to "Manage My Store > Listing Feeds (within Store Marketing)". Click on "Distribute your listings via RSS" and click "Apply". The RSS button should appear on the lower left hand side of your Store.

There are many RSS feed readers to choose from. FYI, feed readers are also known as aggregators. "FeedReader" is a popular freeware application for Windows 98 and later versions that you might want to consider using.

Click here to check out FeedReader:

http://feedreader.com/.

A good list of the readers on the market can be found here:

http://www.2rss.com/readers.php

Once you have an RSS reader, simply go to the bottom of any RSS-enabled page (in this case, eBay Store) you're interested in, click on the orange-colored RSS button, copy the URL from the page that opens, and paste into your reader to display the content in RSS. Be sure to follow the instructions provided by the reader to properly input that URL.

For example, here is the URL that a buyer would input into their reader to keep up to date on the latest listings of my eBay Store, Dealmania Bargains and Gifts:

http://rss.api.ebay.com/ws/rssapi?FeedName=StoreItems&siteId=0&language=en-US&output=RSS20&storeId=636356

Research Can Greatly Improve Your eBay Sales

You've got to have at your immediate disposal the right tools to ensure your success.

If you're really serious about making more money on eBay, you're going to need to invest in the right tools.

You need to invest in research tools. You need solid research to consistently base your eBay listings on real-world listing data.

Here are a couple of my favorite market research tools:

With Terapeak: eBay Marketplace Research you have unprecedented access to hundreds of millions of auctions across the eBay marketplace in less than a second from any computer with internet and browser capabilities. You can learn about category performance, trends, buying habits and information never before available to the eBay user.

Terapeak: eBay Marketplace Research was the first to provide eBay seller, eBay category, eBay Motors P&A, and eBay international research.

There's no lack of eBay advice out there. Some tell you that to increase the closing bids of your auctions, use a low start price. Others will rant how you'll lose your shirt if you don't start higher. So who's right? They both are. Let me explain.

Every product performs differently at auction. A rule of thumb based in fact for one product may completely capsize your efforts if you use it on another type of product.

Start price is just the beginning. To make the most profit on each listing, you need to know what consistently works.

With HammerTap, you arm yourself with knowledge needed to predict future success based on many past listings.

Better yet, researching products you want to sell online only takes a few minutes with HammerTap. When you base your decisions on real data, you build confidence in your buying and selling choices. Trial and error are a thing of the past.

How to Write Great Product Descriptions

"it's all about benefits..."

By Steve Nye, HammerTap

How do you come up with your product description? When creating a listing on eBay, you describe what you're selling and its feature. But what makes one description sell a product where another fails?

It all begins with benefits... not features. OK, so what's the difference? A feature describes something about the product. The benefit tells you what the feature does for you. It says why you should care that the product has this feature.

Google Base Store Connector

The Google Base Store Connector is a free download that enables eBay, Yahoo!, and osCommerce store owners to connect their store information to Google Base.

A connection is created between a specific online store and Google Base, which eliminates the need for store owners to manually submit their items' data.

The Google Base Store Connector automatically formats a store's items to align with the Google Base requirements. At this time, the Google Base Store Connector is only available in English.

To submit your items to Google Base using the Google Base Store Connector, you'll need to complete the following steps:

1. After you've downloaded and installed the Google Base Store Connector, you'll need to run the program to establish a connection with your online stores.

2. To create a Google Base store connection, select the store you'd like to import your items from using the I want to get items from pull-down menu.

3. Enter the email address and password for your account.

4. Choose a name for your connection. Please note that this name will only be used by you to identify and modify your connection, or to upload additional items. This name won't be published online.

5. Once you've filled out the necessary information, click Copy items from my store. You'll be taken to a new tab which will be labeled with the name you specified for the connection. You'll also see a link to your store and to your Google Base account. Finally, you'll see the date and time of the last update of your items and a list of the items and their categories in your store. Please note, because your items have not yet been published, "never" will be displayed as the date last published.

eBay Stores Search Engine Optimization Tips

There are two kinds of search engine optimization that affect the amount of traffic from the Internet to your eBay Store: on-page and off-page. On-page optimization relates to how you configure your actual Store that will help it get ranked. Off-page optimization refers to factors not on any of the Store pages that affect your ranking (namely, in-bound links). Both are very important to the success of your Store.

For Yahoo and MSN, on-page optimization is weighted more than it is on Google. Generally speaking, Google relies more heavily on links than its counterparts, though Yahoo and MSN also place an emphasis on links. Right now, I'll be focusing on best practices for improving your Store's on-page optimization.

When you're creating an eBay Store, the content you place in it is a key factor in whether or not you're successful in attracting traffic from outside of eBay. The Store name, categories, description, and custom pages all play a huge role in on-page optimization. As you set up your Storefront, keep in mind that the information you input should reference very specific terms, products and services that distinguish your eBay business from your competitors. To do this effectively, you'll need to weave keywords into your Store content that your potential buyers would insert when doing keyword searches.

One thing that most new and many experienced eBay Store owners overlook is that eBay assigns a URL or Web site address unique to your Storefront.

Consequently, just like other websites with URL's, your eBay Store can also be found in the most popular search engines. Inasmuch as the Store name you select determines your Store's web site address, take enough time to carefully choose a descriptive store name that tells buyers what you sell. A well-thought-out name will also help Web search engines find your Store when buyers are looking for your products and services.

Weird Al & eBay!

"Ebay" by Weird Al Yankovic

"I want it that way" by the Backstreet Boys is parodied by the excellent Weird Al Yankovic "Ebay" song - synched to the videoclip. I must admit Ebay is very much the way he describes it in the song. Don't take it too seriously; just enjoy! btw I actually love 'Star Wars'.
