Ebay in a nutshell (2) Buying something
This is going to take a while so go get a drink...
1 go to your local ebay
2 sign in (you did sign up didn't you ?)
3 look at categories
4 look at sub categories for something you really want
5 look through the sub category till you find a cheap thing to buy
6 make a bid (over the current bid)
7 sit back and wait till near the end of the auction
(You did look to see it's not for a week or more didn't you ?)
8 1 minute before the auction ends look at the current bid
9 if its still a good deal make a bid a little higher than the current bid.
10 If you win the auction then go to paypal.com and pay for your winning auction goodie.
11 If you didn't win then go to the section of this page called SNIPING !

Learn to be a SNIPER
One easy lesson - no bullets required.
Ok so there's a goodie you really,really want
(say a pair of boots)
Open up the auction to the relevant page about 10 minutes before the aucion ends.
You will need - paper,pen,watch with second hand on it.
Go to the auction page you just opened and open a DUPLICATE page of it. Do not close the first page.
The first page will be your bidding page.
The second page will be your viewing page.
On the bidding page put in the MAXIMUM amount you are prepared to pay for the item (boots in this case) and click the bid button. You will eventually come to a page called CONFIRM BID don't click on that button yet.
The bidding page will be frozen as far as the time is concerned and it is waiting for an action from you.
Now go to the viewing page and click refresh on your browser. This will update the time. Make SURE your watch is synchronised with this page or you will lose out.
Keep refreshing the viewing page until 30 seconds before the auction ends (thats why you synchronised your watch)
now go to the bidding page and about 20 seconds before the auction ends click the confirm bid button.
Now hold your breath....
OK you can breathe now !
Either you will
A: have won the auction Hurrah !!
B have Failed miserably (booooh !)
Why did you fail - because some smarty-pants had sniping software or a sniping service that sniped closer to the time than you could..
OR some idiot put a bid in for more than the item was worth (not your fault !)
I've used this system hundreds of times and its pretty reliable (very few people actually use sniping software but a few do use sniping services).
Try it - you'll like it !
But don't put in a bid too early - all you will do is push the price up and you may have to bid again.
Or you could be smarter still and try this -

Scams on eBay
Oh dear if only everyone was honest...
There are MANY scams on ebay.
The simplest is just not sending goods ..
Next is sending inferior but similar goods (notably a couple who bought a Rolex from a 15 year old kid - they got a PICTURE cut from a magazine of the Rolex - because the kid was under age he couldn't be prosecuted...) Make sure its a REAL Auction. Never buy expensive stuff without a real photo.
SHILLS - oh goodness - whats a shill ? A shill is either a person using several eBay identities or friends identities to build up the price of a popular auction item (nowadays something like an iPhone)
Seller puts starting price.(From himself) bids halfway to retail price,you bid,he bids until near or over retail price. Its really naughty and Ebay is pretty good at booting out people that do this. It can still cost you money though.
Shilling is rather like ringing at antiques auctions too. If a group of antique dealers finds and incredible rarity,they all bid together as separate buyers to force the price up beyond buyers reaches.
How do they make money - they resell the rarity and split the profits betwween them having refunded the successful dealer ! It rather illegal in most countries and counts as a form of Fraud although its really hard to prove. Several major antique auction houses were caught doing this some years ago. Antique auction houses now seem to have cleaned up their act though .
Overpriced Postage - some vendors (especially in the Far East) sell things very cheaply and sting buyers for overpriced post/freight. Beware of this - cameras can have an extra $100 added to real postage prices ! Its rife in Jewelry/Watch sales where $25 is charged for a $ 3 postal rate !

Someone steals an ebay or Paypal identity through spoofing and then gets good sent to them. pretty basic trick - just check with bidder for expensive items to see if they really made a bid.
Warning signs are an ebayer bidding from another country but having goods delivered locally !
Paypal has the same problems.
Not delivered Fraud - a major problem when selling expensive goods - the buyer claims non-arrival and demands a refund.
With any item over $80 its worth paying for registered post anyway and then you have proof of postage and the ability to get a refund from the carrier. Just build it into your price structure .
