The eBook Reader - The Student Advantage

The eBook Reader is an electronic reading device. It has a display screen from which books, magazines, newspapers and documents can be read. Weighing in at about ten ounces and slightly smaller than a text book, it can be carried around quite easily. The ebook reader however can hold a small library of books inside its digital memory banks. Colleges and universities are considering the use of readers for their students, who will now be able to carry an entire curriculum within this compact gadget.

Students who take advantage of ebook readers will benefit in the following ways:

No longer will students need to cry heavy text books with them from class to class.  All their text books, term papers and any research material can be carried in a reader.  The latest models of these electronic book readers have enough storage space to carry 1500 books. Books can be purchased online and downloaded directly to the reader.  Projects can be transferred from computers easily and students no longer have to burden themselves with the carrying of heavy loads of text books from one class to another.

Since the use of computers are common tools for students today, the learning curve for adapting to a reader would be very small. Students can manipulate the readers just as easily as flipping through a book. Bookmarks and searches are basic functions of readers. Some ebook readers have note taking capabilities so students can highlight passages or write marginal notes. Some of the newer models are audio equipped, So not only can a student enjoy his favorite music while reading, he can also have the content read back to him at the push of a button.

An aesthetic benefit of the reader is that the students room will be clutter free, at least from books. Desks will be free from book stacks. There will no longer be a need for large book cases. Once the school year is over there will be no concern over what to do with the used books. Recycling can be eliminated and another forest can be saved.

For schools and students as well the economical aspects of using ebook readers is astounding.  A school's budget can be drastically reduced by switching from text books to ebooks.  The money that can be saved can be allocated to other endeavors. For the student, the cost of an ebook is far less than the cost of purchasing a text book.  Multiply that by the number of text books needed each semester and the savings can be significant.

The transfer from text to ebook will not occur overnight but the change is inevitable. There are still many issues to be worked out between schools and ebook reader manufacturers. The main issue is that of copyrighted material. At present, how this material is handled, that is the selling and lending of content, is still very vague. Google is presently being attacked from all sides in regards to their free book reading service. Its only a matter of time before all these issues get resolved. eBooks and the electrical reading devices used to display their content are the future. Schools can only benefit from the technology and students will definitely have the advantage by having ebook readers.
