Only 9: If I were stranded on a desert island, these are the musicians I'd want with me.
The Squidoo activists were hosting a virtual concert challenge to raise money for charity the final week of July '08 and I just had to join in on the fun. The theme of my virtual concert is an eclectic mix: from unknown musicians to popular ones, from rock to soulful soloists--the thread that links all these musicians together is that, if I were stranded on a desert island and could only listen to 9 musicians for the rest of my life, these are the ones who'd make the cut. And because having all this talent in one place would make for a wildly good time, all proceeds from this lens are donated to the Wild Animal Sanctuary
My Morning Jacket: Eclectic style from a hometown band gone big
This band formed ten years ago and have been making incredible music ever since. They've recently been written about all over the place--from Rolling Stone to local music rags--and since they're from my hometown they get the first spot in this concert. Plus Jim James, the lead singer/guitarist, has done a number of charity performances, so he's perfect for a charity concert.
From an up-and-coming offbeat group to a favorite of almost everyone I know--I'd love to have these guys at my concert because, really, who can avoid singing along to "Roxanne"?
This girl has got a VOICE! She's been described as a cross between Aretha Franklin and Ani diFranco and she's one of the nicest people I've ever been lucky enough to meet. Check her out while she's still unknown because she's sure to get big someday soon.
Peter Gabriel has been a favorite of mine ever since I heard "In Your Eyes" years ago, but I began to really respect him when he started funding so much world music and general global improvement efforts. He's got an amazing voice, a great ear for other's music, and obviously cares--plus who could resist a concert with this guy in it?
Ani has been my favorite folk artist for years. Her live performances are both exquisitely well-performed and unbelievably funny; the fact that she can keep her folk style even in a packed theater never ceases to amaze me.
Although Jeff Buckley passed away in an unfortunate accident several years ago, I'd have to find a way to reincarnate the man for the sake of this concert; his powerful and haunting songs never cease to amaze me no matter how many times I hear them.
I first heard this Fiona Apple's voice after midnight, riding in a friend's car across the empty stretch between Pittsburgh and Philly. Perhaps it was the empty stretches of space, the stars, or the fact that I had a crush on the guy in the back seat, but I fell in love with Fiona's enigmatic lyrics and rich voice, and my appreciation hasn't weakened despite that crush being long gone for years.
Damien Rice: Sexy Irishman--oh yeah, AND he can sing
Another male musician with a haunting voice, Damien Rice's songs often make me almost literally weak in the knees--plus he's Irish, and I'm a sucker for a lilting accent, so he's a perfect addition to my desert island mix because I'd like listening to him even if he were just reciting the dictionary. Mmm...
Though it may be purely for nostalgic reasons, nothing makes me bop around happily more than some classic Madonna. And after listening to all these emotional raw and powerful musicians I'd need a little fluff to just zone out, sing along, and bounce to.
Like your lens, I'm a writer too. Just wanted to let you know of the hungersite.com, from the United Nations. Just a click will get people and animals food, shelter, and care. Thanks for the delightful and whimsical lens. Just another writer, Krissttina Isobe
