It's a big internet...where do I start?

The best place to start is with you!
What are your interests and skills? If you haven't already, put together a good resume. Write a cover letter that you can customize for each company to which you will apply.
Look into the pros and cons of being an independent contractor versus an employee. Both options are out there, and you need to understand the difference - particularly for tax purposes.
Network with other people working from home. There are many sites online where you can learn more about working from home. Try WAHM.com or Work Place Like Home for starters.
Types of work that can be done from home include (but are not limited to):

Start Searching
Some places to start your search for a work at home job
Careerbuilder
Hotjobs
Craigslist
Rat Race Rebellion
Use search terms like: telecommute, work from home, work at home, virtual office.
Also, check with local small businesses which may be interested in using home workers for things like appointment setting, customer service, answering calls etc.
It can take a lot of time and patience to search and find the right job. There are some services out there that can help you in your search. They generally charge a subscription fee and you receive notice of new work from home jobs. This can be very helpful for busy professionals who don't have hours to search for these opportunities. One such service is Virtual Vocations.

Self-Employment
A way to own your life
Self-employment gives you the flexibility to control your time. By choosing self-employment or independent contractor (IC) work, you give yourself the ability to set your own schedule and only take on projects that work for you.Be creative! Think about the things you love and the types of things you choose to do with your time, then try to find a project or business around that. You'll haven enthusiasm for your work and your clients will love the results.
Remember when you are self-employed that you must set aside a good amount from your earnings for tax purposes. I highly recommend consulting a tax professional for advice specific to your situation. Not only will you find out how much you need to set aside, but you will also get information about the things you can and cannot deduct on your taxes.
Keep track of your business finances with a good software product like
Quickbook Online Edition - Simple Start Monthly
Most importantly - do NOT let the tax issue scare you away from great opportunities. Turbo Tax is a fantastic software that can walk you step by step through the process of filing your taxes as a self-employed person.

Set Realistic Expectations
What to expect when working from home

Working from home brings unique opportunities and challenges. It can be tricky to find the right job or business that suits your needs. Some things about expectations:
1. If you're starting a business, you must expect to spend some money to start up and promote it. Even the "free" opportunities have some costs associated if you're going to be serious about it.
2. If you're starting a business, you must expect it to take some time to start making good money. Plan for this. Jumping into a business full-time if you're expecting to make a living isn't the best idea in most cases. If you must do this, I'd recommend having at least six months of living expenses saved up before doing so.
3. Expect to pay your taxes! Whether you're an IC or an employee, make sure you're ready when tax time comes. Keep all your pay stubs and/or copies of checks. Keep track of any expenses you incur as part of your business or job. Especially if you're an IC, set aside money from every check for taxes. Consult your local tax professional to find out just how much in your case.
4. Expect that your client or employer will expect reliability and results. Whatever your task is, keep track of your accomplishments. Do what they expect and more.
5. Expect to realize that working from home is not about spending time with your kids. It's always harder than you think it will be trying to work from home and supervise your children, especially if they are small. If you're caring for small children while working, make sure you take on the kinds of positions that are conducive to that environment. A call-center job probably isn't for you, but if you have a talent for web design or writing, you can probably find a fit somewhere.
6. Expect that your expectations may have to change after you gain more experience. There are so many different jobs and businesses to do from home. Finding your perfect fit can take time and change the way you think about working from home.

Home Based Businesses
MLM, Network Marketing, Direct Sales, Services
If you don't want to be an employee, a home based business could be the option for you. There are so many different types of businesses, you're sure to find something that works for you. Some home based businesses rely on face to face contact or telephone calling, some are solely internet based, and many are a mix of both.
Don't let these types of businesses scare you! This isn't your grandpa's Amway! Despite what you may have heard, MLM, Network Marketing and Direct Sales businesses are NOT illegal pyramid schemes. Still, you must do your homework if you're going into business for yourself. When looking at these opportunities, consider these things:
1. Does the company have a product or service that you'd be excited to share with people?
Bottom line, if you're not comfortable with the product, you won't tell anyone - online or off. If you won't share it, you won't make money at it.
2. How long has the company been in business?
This topic could probably be a lens of its own. You'll see pros and cons of long-time businesses and the multitude of "pre-launch" new companies coming out on a daily basis. Both ways have worked for different people. What are YOU comfortable with? Just know who you're dealing with before you pay anything.
3. Is the business duplicatable?
Think about how you found out about the opportunity. However it was - in person, online, a business card you found, an internet ad - ask yourself "can I reach people that way?" These businesses are all about sharing the product and opportunity. You may have to push out of your comfort zone to do this, so you need to know if you're willing to do what the successful people in that business do before you put up any money.
4. It's a common theme with any work from home opportunity - Be Honest With Yourself.
Can you/Will you really do what it takes to succeed in your business? If that's a yes...go for it!

Scam-O-Rama!
Watch out for the scam artists out there waiting to prey on you
First things first: Don't pay for a job! A legitimate employment offer does not require any type of investment. On some occasions, legitimate companies do ask you to pay for a background check, but do NOT be fooled by ads asking for a "training fee" or "materials fee."
Legitimate employers NEVER expect employees to use their own personal bank accounts to transact company business. Don't accept jobs that are "processing payments" or ones asking you to receive packages and re-ship them. These are money laundering schemes that can land you in jail.
Check out potential employers with the Better Business Bureau.
If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
Check out the online work from home forums and seek advice from others who work from home. Message boards are great places to talk about opportunities and to alert others to scams.
Here is a perfect example of a scam email from a job posting:
Finetix manager vacancy 2600.00 USD per week.,
if you are interested in a well-paid part-time(2-3 hours a day) job in a large transportation & logistics company please contact me at usfirmgroup3@aol.com.
With best regards, Alice,
Project manager, EXPDEAL Company
Why is this a scam?
First of all - $2,600.00 a week for 2-3 hours a day. There's your first clue. An AOL email address. Doesn't look like a "real" company to me! Then googling and checking out the company name gives us nothing. This all adds up to one big fat scam. So please, people. Don't email Alice. Don't reply to these people.
Good luck out there!
