Eclectus Parrots

If you are looking for a great companion- have you thought of a parrot?

The Eclectus parrot is charming and intelligent, and make beautiful pets. Their bright colors, ability to talk, and loving personalities have made them one of the most popular parrots available.

Eclectus parrots are very social and openly demonstrate affection.  They enjoy the times that they spend interacting with their families- often forming a permanent bond.  Just like any other commitment, anyone thinking of adopting an Eclectus should be sure that they have lots of time to spend with them.

Eclectus parrots are very intelligent, but they can also be sensitive, and can easily become stressed if they feel neglected or ignored.  These parrots are companions, not decorations and must be cared and loved like a member of the family.

The Eclectus Parrot can and will speak! however, they typically do not start until they are at least 6 months old, and some do not start until they are over a year old. Just like training any other pet, consistency and rewards and attention are required. Repeating the same word over and over helps, but lavishing praising and rewards is a great way to bond and to encourage speaking.

Exercise your Eclectus!

Eclectus parrots are very active birds and need plenty of room to exercise. They should have access to a large playstand if possible, and a "bird-safe" area in which to climb and explore. Putting bird toys around all your Eclectus parrot's living areas help to stop destructive behaviors.

Proper exercise helps the Eclectus maintain its physical and mental health, and is a necessity for a happy, healthy companion.

Male or female...

How Can You tell?

Eclectus Parrots are known as sexually dimorphic. This means that one can tell the sex of the bird by the color of its feathers.

The male Eclectus is a brilliant emerald green color, with bright orange beaks and splashes of red and blue under their wings.

The female Eclectus is mostly bright red, with black beaks and deep purple markings on their chests and tails.

Feeding

The Eclectus has a specialized digestive tract that is different from many other bird species. Due to this, they need to be fed a diet high in fiber. It should be made up of fresh fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates (like cooked pasta). Seeds and pellets can be offered to an Eclectus in moderation.

When the Eclectus parrot is first born, it must be hand feed with special formula, heated up to no hotter than 101 degrees. While a microwave is the easiest way to prepare this food, the parrot will learn that the sound of the microwave equals food and will make a lot of noise any other time the microwave is used!

Parrot Decorations.

Lots of people love not just their companion, but the whole parrot motiff. There are a lot of homes that feature tropical decorations, and parrot merchandise is often a focal point.

My question is this....I have a Female who will be 5 months old that we got when she was only 1 month old. I am having issues with weaning her and now she is really into squawking for some reason. How can these issues be fixed without having to get rid of the bird?
