Eclipse Eye Safety: NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN!
Lunar Eclipses may be safely viewed with the naked eye. You are watching the shadow of the earth pass over the moon. Binoculars and optical magnifiers may be used as well without any special filtering necessary. The Sun, however, is a very different case.
Never, never, NEVER look directly at the Sun without proper filtering!!! Seriously, you can do major permanent damage to the retina resulting in visual impairment or even blindness.
Unless you have special solar filters, optical devices such as BINOCULARS AND TELESCOPES WILL NOT PROTECT YOUR EYES. Because of their magnifying effect, viewing the sun through these without proper filtering can actually cause more damamge than directly gazing at the sun with the naked eye. Most telescopes will utilize a solar projection screen for safe viewing of the sun.
The safest, most widely available "live viewing" is an online webcam, of course. If you must have the "direct experience" please check with the experts so that you will be able to enjoy viewing many celestial phenomena for years to come.

Eclipse Chasers
What is an "Ubraphile"?
They will travel the globe to the remotest places to get a good glimpse at these marvels of the sky.
- Eclipse-Chasers
- Eclipse Chasing Experiences
-by Bill and Denise Kramer
We have been eclipse chasing for several years now and find the experience to be one that is both quite rewarding and exhilarating, but often very educational as well. Eclipse chasing takes you to new places you would not normally consider visiting and gives and excuse to visit others that you really wanted to go see in the first place.
Due to the geometry and general nature of a solar eclipse, one must travel to the "path of totality". As the moon's shadow touches down on the surface of the Earth, the widest path of totality will be about 100 miles.. The longest viewing is from the centerline of that path. Consequently, the journey to see and photograph an eclipse can be almost as fascinating as the eclipse event itself! - Ecliptomaniacs
- A brief history of the Ecliptomaniacs
"In 1999 a group of 60 Irish people travelled to Shabla in Bulgaria to view their first total solar eclipse. Little did some of them know at the time that this visit would change their lives for good. A core group of twelve went on to become dedicated eclipse chasers or umbraphiles as some prefer to be called. However the South Africans called us Ecliptomaniacs and this amusing insight into our passion has become my preferred term for what we do, a compulsion to travel the world and "steal" brief glimpses of one of nature's great spectacles for that is what a solar eclipse indeed is." - Glenn Schneider: Umbraphile
- Glenn Schneider is an UMBRAPHILE.
Literally a "shadow lover", but properly applied, one who is addicted to the glory and majesty of total solar eclipses. Those who have basked in the moon's shadow will know what I mean without further explanation. Those who have not may have difficulty in understanding that umbraphillia is not only an addiction, but an affliction, and a way of life. The real raison d' etre for many of us. The more common and prolific term "solar eclipse chaser" is nearly synonymous, but somehow does not convey the depth of commitment to this lifelong endeavor.

See the moon turn blood red!
The moon often changes color during an eclipse due in part to conditions in the earth's atmosphere. Shades of red, orange, gold and even violet-blue can be seen.
