ECO Art: Talking to Leaves

Natural Leaf Art

It is not unusual for man to be inspired by the beauty of his environment. From ancient days man has been creating art from what he finds in nature.

Please take a walk with me as we talk to the leaves and share in the artistic offerings of man. Down this path we will explore the incredible art of carved, cut and painted leaves.

We will appreciate how they were used as religious offerings, spiritual storytelling, gifts, charms and objects of worship. I urge you to take a walk in nature, create art and talk to the leaves. You will be richly rewarded by your encounters with nature.

Special Gifts

"Natural leaf carving is actual manual cutting and removal of a leaf's surface to produce an art work on a leaf. The process of carving is performed by artists using tools to carefully remove the surface without cutting or removing the veins. The veins add detail into the subject matter of the carving."

The Chinar Tree

"The material or most common leaf used in leaf carving is the leaf of a Chinar tree. The Chinar tree is native to India, Pakistan and China. There are sixty steps in the process of drying, curing and creating these amazing works of art." The Palm Tree

"Ancient Bali Handicraft on Dried Palm Leaves. Interview with Kadek Ardita, a Balinese artist who carries on the beautiful handicraft of drawing and writing on dried palm leaves as it has been effectuated for thousands of years, long before paper had been developed. Today only a few people on the island of Bali inherited this craftmanship and use it to create storyboards like on the Ramayana, calendars or illustrations of deities." go to Palm Leaf Painting for more information on the process.

The Autograph Tree (Clusia Rosea)

Autograph treeIn Hawaii you will find a tree that the locals call the autograph tree. Tradition has it that you can leave messages on the leaves of that tree for your friends to see. I was led to drawing on the leaves of that tree creating Zentangle inspired Art. You can see the Art I create each day and learn about the process on my blog.

I have "chicken skin" when I realized that the work that I was creating on those leaves, along with the Whispers of Aloha that I shared, was done by ancient peoples from places around the world. I have been creating art as a moving meditation with the intention of helping to make this world a better place and in the footsteps of my ancestors my art is perpetuated as a spiritual practice.

I talk to trees and they talk back to me. Not in words but when I refocus to listen to them I can feel them. I used to ask them for help when I walked through the panhandle of Golden Gate park. and during a rash of burglaries in midtown I asked them again for help keeping the neighborhood safe. It's no wonder I live in the city of trees!
