Eco Domes: How to build your very own, sand bag, earth friendly shelter

Ranked #1,010 in How-To, #10,949 overall

Very organic, free flowing, soothing feel to these houses.

There is something very nuturing in these type of houses. Round, organic, flowing walls, they take on a life of their own with personality, likes and dislikes. One has no choice but to respect the house, care for it, and send it love, as one would a family member.

Traditional shelters of this type seemed much more in tuned with the earth energies than our modern boxes of today, with their sharp corners and cold atmosphere, sealed windows and recycled air.

When you enter a round structure that rises directly up from the earth yet remains connected to it, you enter the very womb of Earth herself. Immediately, you feel "home," you feel protected, you feel the love of the place.

Eco-Dome - download it at calearth.org

calearth.org this film shows how a pile of earth, dug out from the building site, is turned into a small house called Eco- Dome (moon cocoon model), using the Superadobe technology. It documents how professionals and students from many countries training at Cal-Earth Institute built this structure. It is intended for use with materials and tools developed for instruction during the apprenticeship retreat at Cal-Earth. Superadobe technology was first presented by the architect to NASA for lunar habitats, and can build single or clustered homes on earth which are resistant to fire, floods, wind storms and earthquakes.

These eco-domes must be the simplest hand built small home structures ever. No foam, earth fill - what could be better for the inhabitants and the environment. They remind me of hobbit houses with panache - lensrolled to Eco-Friendly Tiny Houses as another example of sustainable small homes anyone can build. 5*, of course!

We've been considering building a cob house for some time now, but your eco dome squidoo page has us thinking of alternatives. Thank you for creating this!

My husband and I are big dome-lovers. There's a pretty funky dome house--well, multi-dome house--in nearby Sedona (I say "funky" mostly because of the bright colors they painted each of the domes). And we've seen many others in Arizona and elsewhere. I know my husband wants to build one someday. He's also on Squidoo, and I'll tell him about this lens.

What is your impression of these Eco-dome houses?

Share your likes and dislikes.

With the understanding that we can include all the modern conveniences and luxuries we are accustomed to ( i.e. water, electricity, cable connection, internet, stove, etc.), natural building material offer a much healthier environment than most of our current toxic saturated and outgasing "modern" one.

From looking at the information provided here, would you consider living in an Eco-Dome if given the chance?

Susanne_Iles says:

Yes! We've been looking to build our own home and art studio and have been considering cob. The Eco dome is an intriguing alternative and well worth looking into.

greenmeds says:

Very ecoy, very homey... kind of a Tipi guy myself, but I've been thinking of getting into the whole Earth/cob/stonje construction thingy as well - nice place ya got here ^_~

Catalysthere says:

It would have to be a very big one - I am claustraphobic. (did I spell that right?)

No. What's keeping you? Doubts, mistrust, construction material, visual, etc. Tell us why.
