Welcome to the EcoSherpa Lens

At EcoSherpa we're very passionate about encouraging people to live in a more sustainable way (ourselves included), and have lots of exciting plans for the site and our organization as a whole. We've gone through some slow periods on the blog (and certainly here as well), but regardless of what life thows our way we're commited to continuing to spread the word about green living.

Some New Links We Like

Some great green sites! Enjoy!
SPIN Farming
Small Plot Intensive farming, a method for maximizing your organic yields on small pieces of land - thus making it ideal for urban agriculture.
Garden Girl | Urban Sustainable Living
Patti Moreno, a.k.a. 'Garden Girl' is passionate about sustainable living - and it shows! She has a really cool show in the planning stages (I think) as well as a book. Be sure to check out her 5 minute promo video.
Sushi | Sustainability in Hawai'i
As the bio states, Ken Stokes is a green economist and sustainability advisor to senior executives at some of Hawaii's largest corporations and most influential community groups. He also happens to be an excellent green blogger and all around nice guy! Be sure to pay him a visit.
Off-Grid.net | Free Yourself
I very recently stumbled across this one and it looks to be an excellent blog, covering a wide range of topics relating to sustainability.

Excellent Free Resources

Sun Rise: Your Complete Guide to Sustainable Living
Fantastic sustainable living Ebook (over 300 pages with lots of colour photos). Here is a blurb from the site: "This down-to-earth book explains in simple terms, how we all can start using solar energy, wind power, breathing walls, straw bale home construction techniques, passive solar design, smart windows, green roofs, and composting - today! You'll learn how John Wilson and his family made their dreams come true as they explain how to make Natural Living work for you."
I'm not sure how long the author will be offering this for free. I also recommend watching the video tour of the Wilson home (see video section below)
ATTRA Aquaponics guide (PDF)
Great introduction to the topic of aquaponics (28 pages with colour photos)
Manual of On-Farm Vermicomposting & Vermiculture (PDF)
Excellent vermicomposting guide, with particular emphasis on farm-scale systems. (56 pages, colour photos)
Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble
Lester R. Brown's new (2006) updated version of "Plan B" (2003). All sections of the book are available for free download.
From the preface:
"Plan A, business-as-usual, has the world on an environmental path that is leading toward economic decline and eventual collapse. If our goal is to sustain economic progress, we have no choice other than move onto a new path-Plan B. This is why I wrote the original Plan B in 2003.
There are many reasons why we have updated and expanded this 2003 edition into Plan B 2.0. Most fundamentally, there still is no widely shared sense that we need to build a new economy-and even less, a vision of what it might look like. The purpose of this book is to make a convincing case for building the new economy, to offer a more detailed vision of what it would look like, and to provide a roadmap of how to get from here to there."
Humanure Handbook
Joseph Jenkins updated (3rd ed.) guide to composting 'human manure'. A very well-researched and interesting read (I own the 2nd edition). You can freely access previous additions as well.
Green Remodeling Guides
An excellent series of PDF guides offered by Seattle's Department of Planning & Development - created to help people not only improve the aesthetic appeal of their homes, but just as importantly also help them save money and be more environmentally friendly in the process.
Highly recommended in 'World Changing' (see book list below).

Well I gave it my all, but unfortunately I had to call it quits with the winter composting. It was a lot of fun and it will be great to give it another go next season! In the meantime I shall dream of warmer days!

Great Eco-Videos

The Denial Machine
Fascinating CBC documentary (just over 40 minutes). Here is a blurb from the site:
"The documentary shows how fossil fuel corporations have kept the global warming debate alive long after most scientists believed that global warming was real and had potentially catastrophic consequences. It shows that companies such as Exxon Mobil are working with top public relations firms and using many of the same tactics and personnel as those employed by Phillip Morris and RJ Reynolds to dispute the cigarette-cancer link in the 1990s."
Wilson Solar House
Very interesting video tour of an eco-friendly house in Orangeville Ontario (Canada). Approx. 25 minutes in length.
Enertia Solar Heated/Cooled Home
I WANT one of these!!
Interview with Leonard Allen (Solera Sustainable Energies)
Interesting discussion about Leonard Allen's 'off-the-grid' home. What's especially cool is the fact that it's a large house with many modern amenities (dishwasher, clothes washer/drier, big screen tv, computers etc). (29 minutes)
Dr. John Todd @ Green Festival (San Fran 2005)
Dr. John Todd discusses various fascinating 'eco-machine' projects he has worked on. (40 min)
Fuel Cells Explained
An excellent video from PBS all about Fuel Cells.
