Can Ectomorphs Gain Muscle?

An ectomorphs muscle gain is typically very slow as the reasons that your body is such a thin, slim type protecting you against fat also stops you gaining muscle.

In fact many skinny guy ectomorphs doubt that can gain any muscle because they have either tried to lift weights and failed or have tried to gain a little weight through eating and have still ended up looking like a bean pole and hating it.

This does not mean you cannot gain muscle when you are a skinny hardgainer but it does mean that you need to be well aware of your body type and be prepared to go some extreme lengths to combat your genetic disposition to be slim!

Muscle Gain for Ectomorph Body Types

There are a few things that extreme ectomorphs need to know about their own body and how to gain muscle. Their metabolism, their diet and how to lift weights.

Metabolism

Metabolism is the process that the body goes through that creates energy from food to power your body physically and mentally in many ways. If you have a high metabolism then you are probably an ectomorph because this means your body burns through energy or calories at a much faster rate than other body types

The most obvious effect of this is that you will not carry a lot of fat on your frame as fat is caused by the body needing to store energy it has not burned. You never leave anything left for fat!

What this also means is that another function of energy and nutrients in your body is left without any resources. To grow and repair muscles that have been stressed from weight lifting and exercise requires a lot of energy to do which means it will not happen without the fuel to do so.

Diet

This brings us to what you eat and how you eat to gain muscles as an ectomorph. You basically have two things to look at: your maintenance calories and your growth calories.

Maintenance calories are the amount you need to function and nothing more. This is probably your usual diet that allows you to do all the normal things in life such as sleeping, resting, working, eating, digesting and light everyday exercise.

Growth calories are the amount OVER this level you need to eat to be able to grow muscle and not be in energy deficit where the body will cannibalize muscle.

You will need to w approximately what your maintenance calories are and then plan to eat that and a LOT more so that all the work at the gym actually pays off with muscle growth not just sore muscles craving protein and calories!

Weight Lifting

Another place many skinny ectomorths wanting to gain muscle do wrong is in how they lift weights and exercise in general. Intensity is king in the gym which does not mean completely exhausting yourself but it does mean you really need to pressure yourself and your muscles to get any ream muscle gain.

Muscle grow only once they have been stressed to the point that the body needs to adapt. This means you need to lift heavy weights. You can lift them less times than you might lift lighter weights but the whole point is to come away knowing you lifted to the maximum you possibly can and pushed it so hard the muscles will tear slightly which is when the body goes into repair mode.

This feeds back into your diet and metabolism as when you rest the energy you have in excess goes about repairing those tears and overcompensating by building larger muscle fibers around the tears which becomes muscle growth!
