Dispelling The Myths And Providing The Remedy For Eczema

There have been a lot of eczema home remedy tips and guides on the internet these days, as much as there are myths and misinformation surrounding eczema.

In this article, I will be providing a clearer explanation about eczema, its causes and some good eczema home remedy that you could use yourself to relieve and even cure your skin afflictions.

What Exactly Is Eczema?

Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis)is a chronic and recurrent skin disorder which can be frustrating and difficult to handle sometimes.

Eczema can be characterized by location (hand eczemas), possible cause (varicose eczema), or specific appearance (eczema craquele or discoid).

Eczema is a very common form of allergic reaction found in all the races and sex including infants. In fact it is more common in children as 20 % children are affected compared to 1-2 % adults. It begins at an early stage of life and most of the children experience its first symptoms before 5 years of age.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema is caused by a hypersensitive reaction of the skin which leads to long-term inflammation, almost similar to an allergic reaction. This hypersensitive reaction causes the skin to become itchy and scaly. In severe cases blistering, crusting, cracking, flaking, oozing or bleeding is also possible. Long-term irritation and scratching can cause the skin to thicken and have a leather-like texture.

Eczema tends to run in families. It is most common in infants, and at least half of those cases clear by age 3. In adults, it is generally a long-term or recurring condition.

Common triggers that can cause eczema include soaps, detergent, creams, weather, jewelry, environmental allergens, food handling, clothing, sweating, rubbing, gloves, bacteria, mental, emotional or physical stress.

The Symptoms Of Eczema

The most common symptom of eczema is itchy patches on the skin. While any part of the body can develop these itchy patches, the most common location for the irritation include itchy patches near the elbow bends, back of the knees, ankles and wrists, on the face, neck, back and upper chest. These patches will first begin to feel hot and itchy, and after a person starts scratching it (which they will most likely do), it will turn red, inflamed and blistered.

Other common symptoms of eczema include:
* Blisters with oozing and crusting
* Dry, leathery skin areas
* Ear discharge or bleeding
* Intense itching
* Rash
* In children younger than age 2, skin lesions begin on the cheeks, elbows, or knees
* In adults, the rash is more commonly seen on the inside of the knees and elbows
* Raw areas of the skin from scratching
* Skin coloring changes -- more or less coloring than the normal skin tone
* Skin redness or inflammation around the blisters

Some Eczema Home Remedy Tips You Could Try

While it is adviseable to seek proper medical treatment for the more severe symptoms of eczema, if your eczema is at an early or less severe stage, you may try these eczema home remedy tips. These are some of the most recommended tips tried by other people suffering from eczema, and though its effect vary from one person to another, they should provide some relief to your suffering.

1) Grate nutmeg (nutmeg) and mix in a little water. Apply this paste to the affected area.
2) Mix 1 tsp camphor with 1 tsp sandalwood paste and apply this to the affected eczema areas.
3) Use mild soaps any soap which specifies "For hypoallergenic skin" or "For sensitive skin". Soaps with moisturizers such as Dove, Olay are good.
4) Oatmeal baths are good cleansers- Take the flaky variety of oats and blend it in a dry mixer to make powder. Mix in a little water and make thick paste. You can use this instead of soap to cleanse your body while having bath.
5) Remember that stress and anxiety can flare up eczema so try and remain as cool as possible.

    Hi Jolibean. I first heard of the remedy of using mineral oil for eczema about 2 years ago when a local dermatologist suggested that to treat my 10 year old niece. I must admit at the time I too was shocked because of the bad press mineral oil had even back then. But his suggestions did help her a lot at the time. Prior to writing this article, I also researched the remedies first and among negative feedback I read I also found lots of positive feedback about mineral oil such as this:

    "The dermatologist instructed me to use pure mineral oil on top of the skin after a 10 minute lukewarm soak in the bathtub. Your skin will absorb water only for the first 10 minutes, but too much water will dry out your skin (it'll shrivel up and wash away your natural oils)." which can be found at http://www.eczema.net/corticosteroids.html.

    But, since it is a remedy and not scientifically proven, to be on the safe side I have removed it from the list.

    Thank you so much for your feedback.

    Tim

    I must admit I'm shocked that you recomended applying mineral oil to the skin. It is a carcinogenic bi-product, and in some cases (including myself) it can cause symptoms to worsen.
