DEALING WITH ECZEMA IN THE UK CLIMATE
To those of us with a sensitive skin the problems just start here.
Our clothing that is laundered in normal off the shelf detergent. Even after rinsing thoroughly a highly toxic residue of chemicals is left on the clothing (think fragrance, conditioner and surfactants/cleansers). This residue combines with normal perspiration to create a catalytic chemical reaction close to sensitive skin.
Now starts the sensation of itching, then the resultant scratching, infection and then full blown eczema!
We then spend out time looking for 'miracle creams' and prescriptions, mostly useless and in some cases unpleasant!
Look first closer to home, like in your kitchen cupboard!
THE STORY OF THE UK'S MOST SUCCESSFUL SKINCARE PROGRAM
It started with a Durham miner!
The Doctors story, fifteen years in the making! Two Durham, UK based GP's intrigued by some similarity in cases of infant skin problems amongst their patients decided to look more closely at what they thought was the common denominator, laundry products.
They set up a consumer group to discuss the issues of skin care. It soon became apparent that many of the mothers encouraged by the intense advertising used by the leaders in the Consumer Health industry. They had chosen particular laundry brands on the promise that they would achieve clean, fresh, smelling clothes for their children, but had overlooked the harmful chemicals common to those brands.
The laundry products were being used increasingly in households nationwide unaware that children with inherited sensitive skin, atopic eczema, would react badly to contact with laundered clothes at particular times of year.
The Doctors commissioned research into the subject using an industry specialist, a Manufacturing Chemist from the worlds largest consumer healthcare company.
He summarized the list of chemicals and there functions used in the most familiar leading brands of laundry powder.
Check the formulations of your household laundry products and compare.
There are some very specific ingredients to check for. Some of these chemicals have even been banned or restricted in some countries because of their noxious side effects. These chemicals are used to give fragrance, enhance colours, increase brightness.
First of the harmful chemicals are phenols. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US has declared that phenol is toxic to people, especially those who are hypersensitive.
The hypersensitive population can experience very dangerous side effects or even death, even at low exposures. Additionally, even at very low levels they can absorb very rapidly, causing toxicity through the whole body and can attack the central nervous system, heart, blood vessels, lungs and kidneys.
The active ingredient in laundry products is household bleach, or sodium hypochlorite. Responsible for the majority of household poisonings, this chemical is a forerunner to chlorine
Look for Naphtha's. These are petroleum based products. Having been linked to cancer, lung damage and/or inflammation, and mucous membrane damage, this is a very harmful chemical.
The Doctors asked The Consumer Health Specialist for a summary of his observations.
''Combining their effects can be even more harmful when it reacts with other organic materials. Carcinogenic and toxic compounds are created. These have been know to cause disorders or damage to the reproductive system as well as the immune and endocrine systems.
From fragrance to whiteners, detergents are becoming increasingly dangerous to use, especially on a regular basis.
Many of them contain cancer-causing chemicals, as well as other harmful toxins. As consumers, the general public should familiarize themselves with some of the common terminology that is often overlooked but may have a longer lasting impact than ever before thought.
Many who have families who have to do laundry on such a frequent basis should realize that these dangers posed by toxins should not go ignored.
In particular where their family have a disposition to sensitive skin!. Sensitive skin damaged in infancy will cause lifelong damage!.''
Research on the impact of household products on infant skin is ongoing by Department of infection and Immunity at Sheffield University
''They should find a laundry powder that is natural, fragrance free, with no added colorants or brighteners.''
.
The Doctors took his advice literally and commissioned the formulation of an entirely new natural laundry powder for use by all the family.
NOTE. With the agreement of their patients they conducted an extensive trial. The results were conclusive that the already existent itchy skin problems, particularly eczema that were common amongst this particular group had been further aggravated by the use of vigorous very well known laundry products.
The natural powder can be used as a regular laundry product cleansing clothes beautifully but not leaving a toxic residue that is harmful to young and more particularly sensitive skin.
That is the history of Skin Salveation, a brand now famous World wide used for all types of skin, in all climates, and all age groups.
The product range includes the famous 'Coal Miners Eczema Soap' featured in the media locally, regionally and 'The Daily Mail' The range of skin care products now extend to a moisturizing, nourishing eczema skin cream to help repair damaged skin following periods of excessively dry itchy skin.
There is now also a natural lip balm, fragrance free ideal to protect lips from the harsh cold winds, nourishing and repairing sensitive skin.
A whole skincare program that has had positive results an as psoriasis treatment.
The laundry powder is approved for use with Dermasilk products available from Espere Health. ECZEMA TREATMENTS CANNOT COMPETE WITH FRAGRANCES
You are exposing your largest organ to the biggest threats daily!!!
How do you identify the allergenic irritant can cause eczema and dermatitis
A skin specialist will firstly examine the location of the rash and try and establish the effects of recent product use.
For example rashes on the wrists or neck can usually be associated with use of strong perfumes. It therefore obviously follows that the use of hair dyes can aggravate the scalp and a rash on the nails can be caused by nail polish.
The difficulty arises in diagnosis when the patient in not seen by their Doctor until weeks after allergenic eczema or dermatitis has flared up. The condition may have already spread from its originally exposed area making it very difficult for the specialist to determine the exact cause.
This can be frustrated by the fact that the patient may believe they had been using fragrance free products.
Some cosmetics, and other fragrant products, are labelled ''fragrance free'' even if they contain fragrance ingredients.
Also, some companies misleadingly label their cosmetics, if they do not contain any of the few allergenic ingredients tested for in Standard Patch test trays, as ''hypoallergenic''.
In ruthless marketing techniques used by leading personal healthcare product manufacturers the use of terms like ''allergy tested, safe for sensitive skin and hypoallergenic'' have great selling power but in fact are meaningless as the manufacturers of these products are not required to do any testing to validate this claim!
When an eczema flare up or dermatitus occurs it is usual for a Dermatologist to conduct a patch test. This simple test involves a drop of liquid containing a mix of commonly known allergens is applied to the skin. A protective tape is applied and after a number of days, usually two the tape is removed and the skin inspected.
Local redness and swelling indicate that the reaction is due to one of those allergens applied. If there is no clear result a different mix of common allergens is applied ,particularly those found in the most recently used products.
Patch test kits are available commercially known as a Fragrance mix (FM) of seven common allergens.
The most common allergens found in the top range perfumes are :Balsam of Peru, hydroxycitronellol, cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamic Alde Hyde, oak moss, eugenol and geranial.
These ingredients are used in the European and North American Standard Patch tray tests.
There are some ingredients that cannot be clearly identified as fragrance allergens these include the essential oils jasmine absolute, ylang-ylang, lemongrass.
You can now see the difficulties that the Doctor is faced with identifying to the definitive allergens when you have to take into consideration other environmental factors that may have an adverse effect on skin.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A NATURAL LIP BALM IN YOUR ECZEMA TREATMENT
Best combs make best natural lip balms??
Why do we only use the highest quality of freshly drawn combs from bee hives deep in the heart of Northumbria for our natural lip balm?
The answer lies in the unique properties of the propolis it adds to our truly special lip balm!.
Bees have used propolis for millions of years, and humans have used it for thousands.
Propolis is a vegetable mastic made by honeybees from resins collected from the bark and sticky buds of a variety of trees and balsamic plants.
Gathered by the oldest bees, the resins are brought back to the hive and mixed with some wax and salivary secretions before using to sterilize the hive against infection.
Also called "bee glue", propolis is used by the bees to varnish the hive interior, seal cracks and cement things together.
Containing approximately 55% resinous compounds and balms, 30% beeswax, 10% aromatic essential oils, and 5% bee pollen, propolis is the substance responsible for neutralizing any bacteria, fungi or virus that enters the hive.
It is one of the most powerful antibiotics found in nature. It is rich in amino acids and trace elements, has a high vitamin content, including at least 38 valuable bioflavanoids. Because of the high levels of bioflavanoids in propolis, the product has a high antioxidant value.
A large number of studies have shown propolis to be highly antimicrobial. It is found to have an inhibitory affect on at least 21 species of bacteria, 9 species of fungi, 3 species of protozoa (including Giardia), and a wide range of viruses.
It is believed that Hippocrates, the Father of medicine, prescribed the use of propolis to help heal sores and ulcers, internally and externally.
Unlike penicillin and other drugs, propolis is always effective. Bacteria cannot build a tolerance to it.
The writings of Aristotle describe the healing properties of propolis for suppurating wounds, abscesses, and boils.
During the Boer War (1899-1902), it was used along with honey to treat the soldiers wounds. Propolis is known to have a stimulating effect on tissue growth, anti-inflammatory properties and a positive influence on the immune system.
Available as a tincture, propolis is used for disinfecting and protecting cuts and abrasions. In capsule form, propolis can be taken as a daily supplement aiding against bacterial infections.
It is often found in daily use in commercial kitchens used to treat minor burns.
Often called "nature's penicillin", bee propolis has effective antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, antifungal, and antibiotic properties.
As a highly nourishing skincare aid it can also be used as part of an eczema treatment protecting lips during harsh winters and exposure extreme temperatures.

How does drinking water effect our skin?
First let us look at our domestic water supply. If you are supplied via mains from your local water company you need to consider the quality of water we drink everyday.Tap water often contains chemicals such as chlorine, chlorinates, and V.O.C.'s ( Volatile Organic compounds). These chemicals can cause serious long-term health effects, such as increased risk of certain cancers, digestion problems, weakened immune system, and increased risk to certain diseases.
Installing a water filtration system may help reduce the risk from these problems, but consider it may also serve to improve your health in other ways.
Drinking 'clean water' improves digestion, nervous system function, and aids in detoxification. Unfiltered water causes your body to absorb too much sugar, leading to stress on your kidneys, digestive problems, and lower energy levels.
'Clean water' is not only the key to staying healthy and hydrated, but can improve weight loss efforts significantly. When you aren't hydrating yourself properly, you aren't getting the necessary nutrients you need for food causing hunger pangs. When your constantly dehydrated, your body will always be in constant craving of food, which will cause overeating and malnutrition at the same time. This mixture is extremely unhealthy and can contribute directly to obesity. By drinking filtered water, you are hydrating yourself properly while avoiding the danger of unfiltered chemicals.
Washing and showering in clean water has a vital role in helping those of us with sensitive skin. Many eczema flare ups are not only by use of harsh cleansers but also a change in water quality. Unfiltered water quality in general varies to such an extent that even very limited use of water in a region away from home can cause problems to people with sensitive skin .
Chlorine can cause skin to feel itchy, a dry irritated scalp and hair to be unmanageable. The strong vapours can also cause irritated eyes and in extreme cases headaches.
Filtered water is altogether better for your health and well being and showering in clean water is altogether more enjoyable, refreshing and better for the condition of your skin.
Remember water accounts for 75% of your brains weight, and over 96% of your livers weight!---- So probably best to have good quality water!!
