Eczema - The Constant Itch! - our nightmare
Ranked #5,455 in Healthy Living, #95,321 overall
Eczema can be a Real Nightmare
I wanted to create this lens on eczema because of the hell we went through with our own son Sam. It was an awful time and one I don't wish on anyone. Whilst it only went on for a couple of years it seemed like forever. We are now trying for our third child and at least now I feel more equiped to deal with the itch third time around. In this lens you will find our own Eczema story and some tips and information we learned along the way.
Eczema is really hard to deal with - the constant itch. It seems to be worse at night - sleep is hard to get because every time you feel yourself nodding off the the itch wakes you up. Then the lack of sleep makes the eczema worse - its a vicious circle!
Atopic eczema is the most common type of eczema. This is where there is a history in the family of allergies. Whether it be hayfever, dust-mites, asthma or eczema. Atopic eczema affects 20% of young children.
You probably guessed that the pic is of Sam, I had to scan it onto the computer so its not very clear, but if you look closely you will see the scratch marks all around his forehead and the redness of his cheeks. I will find some other images which show his eczema more clearly.
Our Eczema Experience

My son Sam suffered with eczema as a baby and we tried everything - and I mean EVERYTHING. We spent a fortune. I did use steroid cream initially but only for a couple of weeks until I realised that it actually thins the skin and is not good for long term use. As soon as I stopped using it - BAM - the eczema came back much worse than before.
We suffered for 20 long months (seemed an eternity) with the eczema. When I say we, not just Sam, that is exactly what I mean. My husband used to spend his nights laid on the couch with Sam laid on his chest, holding Sams arms down while they slept. Well if you can call it sleeping. My husband was exhausted! I used to be constantly on the internet researching eczema causes, searching for cures, - trying to end the nightmare! My eldest son Harry suffered aswell - his Mum and Dad were focused on solving eczema, which of course did not leave a lot of time to spend with Harry.
I can safely say that it was one of the worst time of our lives. This may sound dramatic (not to a parent who has a young child suffering with eczema). The worst thing a parent has to go through is to see their child suffer and not be able to do anything to help them. Sam was always putting his hands up to his neck to scratch - this was the worst area. I think it was made worse because of the lack of air that gets to a babies neck when they can't hold their head up.
Croc Oil - new find
The ingredients are 100% croc oil, beeswax and other healing oils. Natural product.
The reviews that come with this product are great and certainly make it a good one to try.
Eczema can be just the start......
When a child gets eczema and their is a family history of allergies they can go on to develop (or may already have) other allergies, such as asthma, dust mites or hay fever. As many as 5% of children with eczema will go on to have food allergies and as many as 40 % of children develop asthma and/or hay fever.
Our son Sam went on to develop asthma and food allergies. I feel a bit cheated to be honest because in all our trips to the hospital with Sams asthma and our visits to the doctor with either the eczema or asthma we were never warned that this could happen. I never even knew that food allergies existed, well I had heard of them but I did not know how serious the consequences could be. We had to find out the hard way. Sam had a bad reaction to sesame that send us rushing to the hospital in panic - he was losing his breath, his face was all puffed up and he was going limp! It was terrifying.

Having the same product to treat the eczema and to wash means that you are not aggravating the skin. By using more than one product on your skin the skin can become angry and flare up.

Natural or Steroid ?

Natural Remedies for eczema are being searched for more frequently due to the fact that the prescribed steroid does not actually rid the eczema. In fact, it can actually make matters worse. If you have eczema and use a steroid cream to try to resolve eczema you will notice that as soon as you stop using the steroid the eczema actually comes back worse than before. This is due to the fact that it does not actually solve the problem but it covers the eczema, sort of pushing it back.
My son Sam suffered with eczema as a baby and we tried everything - and I mean EVERYTHING. We spent a fortune. I did use steroid cream initially but only for a couple of weeks until I realised that it actually thins the skin and is not good for long term use. The Steroid Debate......
Have your say....
Would you use Steroid or Natural treatment for eczema ?

Natural, steroid thins the skin
HealthyBodee says:
I think that on the whole it is best to try every natural avenue you can before using steroids..... especially with children
my_never_bored_hands says:
Of cause just natural treatments! But first you need to avoid all foods or drinks which give the allergies/eczema to your child. Have a diary, where you put every food your child eats and describe the reaction if any. And if you know someone in the family who had any kind of allergy, you can not eat those foods either, which can cause the allergies too, even your baby is not eating the solid food yet: because otherwise baby will still get all allergens through breast milk. Sometimes, even the smell of the food can give a lethal result!
I went through all these nightmares with eczema (and still dealing with) three times: all three children had an eczema. But some people are mistaking, thinking that eczema can disappear with age... it never will. It will change the form: from itching to eczema, from eczema to asthma... unless, you find the cause before it become really serious. It must be done as soon as first symptoms show up.
Steroid, natural doesn't work

I Can't Help Feeling Let Down
I am dissappointed that our GP didn't advise us that Sam had a strong chance of developing allergies. At least we would have been able to understand what was happening - instead of having no idea why his face was swelling beyond recognition!

Dust Is A Trigger For Eczema

We have been virtually eczema free for a year or so now, but now Sam has got just a couple of eczema patches in the bends on his arms. To be honest, a few people I know who have had or have eczema or dermatitis are suffering more at the moment. You see we have a lot of dust in the air at the moment and dust is a trigger for eczema
We live on the Sunshine Coast, Australia and a couple of weeks ago there was a huge dust storm that came up from the Sydney area. We missed the worst off it (I feel for the people in the middle of it). The dust clouds were here for only a day or two but now 2 weeks on there is still dust in the air. This has been stated on the news, but I know be the dust on things. For example my outdoor patio set that I cleaned 2 days ago is now covered in dust! Even the windowsills indoors are the same the dust has gotten in when we have had the windows open.
Anyone who suffers with eczema or dertmatitis will know that dust is a trigger for eczema. We have just gone back to putting on Sams oil but it is not bothering him too much. No sleepless nights or anything, just every now and again I will see him having a scratch.
Repcillin Spray
The Ocean Helped Sam's Eczema

We now live close to the beach because we had heard that the sea could help with eczema. It did help Sam.
Sam was only 18 months old when we arrived in Australia and at first the sea frightened him (he had never seen it before). Up until that point, Sam had only been able to have a quick shower at night time, never a bath because the chlorine in the water would react with his eczema. We bought some 5 gallon drums and once a week went and filled them with sea water and took the water home. We used this sea water to bath Sam in. He loved it! We let him sit in the bath for an hour some nights.
The sea water really helped the eczema it seemed to dry it up and calm the itching. When he came out of the sea water bath we would just put on his natural oil to moisturise and we were sure that he would have a good night.

Eczema on the Hands

Eczema on the hands occurs in over 10% of women and around 4% of males (probably more in women as we have always got our hands in the sink doing the pots, eh girls?). There are some steps that can be taken to stop eczema on the hands getting even worse, these include:
Try to do the pots with a dishwasher rather than washing by hands
If you have to wash them by hands try to use a long handled brush
If you wear the gloves to clean etc (this is good practice with eczema on the hands) then get the ones lined with cotton or if you cant find them (they can be a bit tricky to locate) wear cotton gloves underneath rubber or vinyl gloves.
Try to avoid your hands getting too hot or cold as temperature change can trigger eczema.

- Hi ...I suffer from a rare illness that causes inflammation of the skin. I drown myself in hand creams and when it is very bad then I have to resort to steroids to help out. Lately I am trying shea butter as it is natural and reported to help control inflammation. Your article is very good on the topic. I did notice you have some outbound spam links in your comment section which should be removed....squidoo tries to stay spam free and it is a constant battle. Best wishes

- Eczema and asthma are said to be hereditary and to skip one generation. My ex-husband had terrible excema and asthma, and was hospitalized for both on numerous occasions. My children were completely free of both. Both of my children respectively married partners who had asthma but not eczema. Both children had one child who suffered from both asthma and eczema but not as badly as my ex-husband did (possibly because medication is better now than it was forty years ago).
When my grandson was a baby my daughter didn't want to use steroids because they thin the skin. She tried many things, but the ones that worked best were Chinese medicine - it cleared up the eczema completely for a while. However she heard that these medicines are strong and can cause kidney trouble, so she stopped giving him that. Gradually the eczema came back, and sometimes he is clear, then another outbreak starts. His last one was caused by having school swimming lessons (chlorinated water) and not showering afterwards.
I will pass on your information to my family - hope it works for them, and thanks.

- Thumbs up! Very informative lens. But from my family experience, I want to give some
recommendations: try to switch all cleaning and laundry products in your house from regular ones to Organic or Natural; buy food and drinks without artificial flavors, colors and without a preservatives! In some cases they are the real cause of allergies, not the food themselves (eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and asthma are all allergies, only different types and levels). You'll see the difference pretty soon, when you try it.

- Thank you for all the information! Your lens is fantastic! I had many skin allergies when I was a child and I suffered from eczema when I was a teen. The problem disappeared with time, but in the beginning it was quite disappointing. Fortunately I stopped having problems when I became an adult.

- OMG, this is NO laughing matter! As a child, both me and one of my sisters had the worst cases of eczema that I can recall. I had it on the insides of my arms, at the crook opposite my elbows. My sister, who was a competition flute player, had it on her hands, of all places! We both look like we were part lobster or something. Nothing really took care of the ITCH -- I do seem to recall this metal tin that was a teal and navy color with a dark brown creamy ointment. It smelled interesting and seemed to be what the doctor ordered. I feel for anyone plagued by eczema, sincerely!

- I had eczema for years during middle and high school (mainly in the inside of my arm, opposite my elbow). Sometimes it would appear to clear up but then the next morning it would be terribly bad again. It was frustrating and embarrassing as a student in public school. I have rid myself of my eczema but this lens was extremely informative and I wish I would have found it earlier than I did. It still helped me understand why I am also allergic to shrimp and dust mites and why for my earlier years I had asthma as well. Great post keep up the good work!!

- This is the best eczema lens I have read so far that tackles the real problem and not just promotes products. I have eczema and have suffered from it since I was 11 years old. I am using a steroidal cream right now but might switch and might try the
Repcillin. I hope it also works for adults.
