Eczema Steroid Cream - My Experience Using Steroids to Treat Eczema
Throughout my childhood I used low level Eczema Steroid Cream to treat my eczema. When entering adulthood and University, my stress levels sky rocketed and I needed to use the most potent form of steroids.
I began to use the resources available to me at University to research eczema treatments. My goal was to eliminate my eczema once and for all and stop the painful symptoms. The red, flaky, itchy and scaly skin was not only embarrassing, but so painful and uncomfortable.

Application of Eczema Steroid Cream
There are two categories for the use of Steroid Cream for Eczema. The most commonly prescribed are Topical Corticosteroids, and they also come in low potency non-prescription form. There are also Oral Corticosteroids, which are rarely prescribed, and are used in a severe situation or as a last resort.Topical Corticosteroids
This medication is applied directly to the skin, and should avoid contact with the eyes. Hydrocortisone is the most commonly used example and is available in prescription and non-prescription form
Oral Corticosteroids
This treatment is used when topical treatments have proved ineffective. In severe cases, an initial dose can reduce inflammation and allow for a period of healing. These are not to be used by pregnant women.
Different Levels of Potency of Eczema Steroid Creams
Steroid Treatment range from Mild, to Very Potent. I have been prescribed and used all levels of Eczema Steroid Cream from the most mild non prescription cream to the most potent prescription steroid medication. The most potent example is prescription betamethasone, which cannot be used for extended periods of time and is very powerful.
The most mild example is an over the counter hydrocortisone cream which is mildly effective at helping the itching for top.ical application
Side Effects of Eczema Steroid Creams
Prolonged use of Eczema Steroid Creams can result in the thinning of the skin, damaged blood vessels beneath the skin which increase the appearance of blood vessels, and redness of the skin.Prolonged use of steroid creams will decrease their efficacy until they are ineffective for the treatment of inflammation and itching of eczema.
If applied long term around the eyes, steroid cream can damage the eyes. Such damage includes cataracts and glaucoma. There are many alternatives for Eyelid Eczema.
Alternatives to Eczema Steroid Creams
I have used a variety of treatments to cure my eczema symptoms, and to maintain the symptom free state I have achieved. I do not believe that Eczema Steroid Creams are the solution as they cannot be used long term, but are effective in the quick treatment of sudden flair-ups.
