Artist and Author Ed Emberley

As a child I would hang out in my schools library with every Ed Emberley drawing book I could find. Flipping through the pages filled with shapes and squiggles that when put together created worlds, animals, monsters and people - done in such away that any child could have hours of fun. I would check out as many books as allowed and go home, pull out my paper, pencils and marker and go to town trying to recreate his inspiring art. I still have several of his books and look froward to passing them on to my 6 year old niece who is the same age as I was when I discovered these treasures.

Edward Randolph Emberley (born October 19, 1931 in Malden, Massachusetts) is an American artist and illustrator. He was/is my favorite children's book author and illustrator. Ed Emberley, Caldecott winner for Drummer Hoff, author and illustrator of more than 80 books, including Go Away Big Green Monster, The Wing on a Flea, drawing books like - Book of Animals, Complete Thumb print, Make a world and much much more.

My Favorite Drawing Book as a Kid

A Talented Family

Ed and Rebecca EmberleyAlthough most people are aware of the fact that Barbara Emberley, Ed's wife, has frequently joined forces with Ed on book projects, few are aware of the part his children, Michael and Rebecca, have played. They, too, have worked on Ed's books, helping book projects move from the beginning idea to completion. Michael is now writing and publishing books of his own, and Rebecca is working on several book ideas herself. The Emberley family is very much a part of the children's book world.

Ed studied painting and illustration at the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston, where he met Barbara. They were married in 1955. After two years in the Army, Ed completed his formal art training at the Rhode Island School of Design, while his wife worked as a librarian at Brown University. Their daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1958, and their son, Michael, was born two years later.

In Ed's worl it's possible for anyone to become an artist.
