Who Was Edgar Allan Poe?

Edgar Allan Poe DaguerreotypeEdgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died at the age of 40, through mysterious circumstances. Like so many classic writers of the age, Poe's writing did not achieve much literary acclaim at the time of publication, and most of his works only came to be appreciated after his death. His writing is described as being of the gothic and dark romanticism styles of literature, as the subjects and tone of his work is primarily melancholy, brooding, and dark, and tending towards horror. Poe has been credited with inventing the modern detective story and arguably the modern horror story, as his work has been emulated by mystery and horror writers for over a century and a half since his death.
