"The Edge" - All About Running Back Edgerrin James
Now that the Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl for 2009 my plan with this lens was to write about a family friend in the Squidoo world.
I have to confess I am not much of a follower of football normally. I would not be someone you could refer to as an "Armchair Quarterback". Most years I don't even know who is playing in the Super Bowl.
Most of the statistics related to football were gathered through research and not passionately watching the game for years. So if any ot the facts and figures are disputed by you sports buffs, I apologize.
My Squid Who on Edgerrin James is penned not only to provide you with his football career information but just a balanced look at the man, on and off the football field, who wears jersey #32.
Enjoy the Super Bowl and thanks for visiting my lens!
Edgerrin James and the Arizona Colts Are Headed To Super Bowl XLIII - 2009!
Congratulations to the Arizona Cardinals for making it to Super Bowl XLIII!Many considered them the underdogs and now they have made it. I wish them well in their Super Bowl game against the Steelers, win or lose.
The playoff games for the Arizona Cardinals were each victories in their own right. They played as a team. They showed that they could pull together and beat the odds. I like stories like that.
Edgerrin's Roots in Hometown Immokalee, Florida
Immokalee comes from the Seminole Indian language and it means "our home". For this Collier County, Florida community, it takes pride in one of it's own native sons, Arizona Cardinals Running Back Edgerrin James.Immokalee is a small and ethnically diverse community with a population of about 25,000 in 2007. One of it's largest attractions is the Immokalee Seminole Indian Reservation and Casino.
One of the main industries in Immokalee is agriculture. Large tomato, watermelon and other vegetable farms are the lifeblood of the economy and employment in the community. As a young man, Edgerrin James loaded watermelon trucks during his summer breaks.
Edgerrin loved football from a young age and became one of Immokalee High Schools' most celebrated athletes. He was drafted out of high school to the University of Miami.
In 2004 Edgerrin's alma mater, Immokalee High School won the State 2A Florida Football Championship. Being a proud alumni, Edgerrin purchased championship rings for the football team, coaches and cheerleaders as a congratulations gift.
Some of the James Family still resides in Immokalee today although over the years the family has spread to the communities next door, Lehigh Acres and Naples as well as the bigger cities of Orlando, Miami and Jacksonville.
College Football Days At University Of Miami

Edgerrin James played college football for the University of Miami Hurricanes.
James ranked second in all-time University of Miami rushing yards. He was the only running back in the university's history to post two consecutive seasons with 1000-plus rushing yards. He ranks first in University of Miami history with the most 100-plus rushing games.
All single season records held by Edgerrin James have since been broken by former Miami and current Baltimore Ravens RB Willis McGahee in 2002.
Edgerrin James left the University of Miami when his professional football career began and he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts.
Edgerrin James is an inductee into the University of Miami Ring of Honor for his contributions to the school and it's football program.
In 2000, he donated $250,000 to the University of Miami, which is the largest donation ever made to the university by one of its former athletes.
Edgerrin's younger cousin, Javarris James played for the University of Miami also as a running back when I created this lens. Today, he has also followed in his cousin's footsteps as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

Edgerrin James With The Indianapolis Colts 1999-2006
Edgerrin James was picked in the draft by the Indianapolis Colts and signed a seven-year, $49 million rookie contract. He was honored as the 1999 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press. James won the NFL rushing title in his first two seasons, before tearing his ACL six games into the 2001 season.
A knee injury took him out of the game for awhile and there was speculation that he would never fully recover. Edgerrin James returned to the playing field, playing well in 2003 and re-established his place as one of the top running backs in the NFL in 2004 and 2005, with over 1,500 rushing yards in both seasons.

Edgerrin James #32 With The Arizona Cardinals

On the move in the NFL, Edgerrin James joined the Arizona Cardinals on March 12, 2006 under a four year contract.
Arizona reached the playoffs for the first time since 1998. In that game Edgerrin averaged 4.7 yards per carry and ran for 72 yards.
In the Division round of the playoffs, he rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals upset victory over the heavily favored Carolina Panthers.
Still the underdog, Arizona clinched the title of the NFC Championship defeating the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, he rushed for 73 yards in the Cardinals 32-25 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The team has realized a dream and ended a very long drought for the Cardinals franchise as the team enters Super Bowl contention in 2009.

Edgerrin James: Up Close and Personal
Well not too up close and personal! As a family friend I respect the privacy of someone who is in the public spotlight. It's hard to strike a balance often times between fact and fiction, what the media will run away with or blow out of proportion and the need for privacy and personal space. The James Family is a very close knit family despite it's size. Their family is rather large and there are generations of the James clan living in our local area as well as scattered throughout Florida. One of my closest friends is a James and also my next-door neighbor.
Edgerrin James has strong family ties. He is very close to his mother and his grandmother, who still lives in Immokalee.
Edgerrin James is a doting father and loves his children. As I scoured the internet I saw conflicting stories in his personal biography. However, for privacy reasons I will not go into his personal life too much.
However I can tell you Edgerrin is indeed a Dad, and a great one at that! He plays like a "Big Kid" with his children and their friends. He has a way about him that makes every special occassion even more special. He loves to encourage our youth and often times when you see Edgerrin James off-season around Florida it's not just his children but a pack of children he has in tow. He has a heart as big as himself and you see that when you see him with children.
My son is friends with Edgerrin's children. They are great kids and have a good family structure and upbringing with both their mother and father. Does he have a girl? Yes. Does he have a boy? Yes. He has a handful of children but I'm not going to give their personal information in this lens out of respect for privacy.
Edgerrin is also an avid car buff, old cars really being his passion and has quite a collection of them. He has given many away to family over the years.
You can read an article online about his love for cars by clicking the link below.
During his past year with Arizona, there has been speculation that this might be Edge's last year with the team. His critics and the media said it was a form of sour grapes perhaps for not being played in all the games.
The only information I would offer here is that Edgerrin James has life on the gridiron but also a personal life to juggle. Family is very important to him as is his career and this past season has been trying for him. He has dreams, goals, plans and ambitions that go beyond his football playing years.
Whether Edgerrin stays in Arizona or goes after the conclusion of their pursuit of the Super Bowl title remains to be seen. But one thing is for certain. It is something I think even his harshest critics can't argue. When it came time for Arizona to count on Edgerrin, he came forward as a team player just as dedicated to the Super Bowl dream as the rest of his team. Go Arizona!
In Memoriam of Andia Denise Wilson-James and an Update
As a follow up to my lens, I wish to pay tribute to a wonderful Mom, wife and lady.Following the Super Bowl, Edgerrin James' life became more about family and he returned home to Florida to be close to them.
On April 14, 2009, he lost his wife and partner Andia Denise Wilson-James at a very young age after a courageous battle with leukemia. She leaves behind not only Edgerrin but four wonderful, sweet and adorable children who have been remarkably strong in character and faith following the loss of their mother.
The end of the football season also saw a parting of the ways for Edgerrin and the Arizona Cardinals. His love for football will continue him on his career path but this has been a tough year for his family on a personal level.
God needed an angel when he took Andia from this world so young. RIP Andia and know you live on in the hearts of your family and friends!
