Edie Brickell

Edie Brickell is an American singer/songwriter, born March 10, 1966 in Dallas (Oak Cliff), Texas.

In the late 1980s Brickell was the lead singer with the (now renamed) folk-rock group Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, whose 1988 debut album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars was a critical and commercial success. The band's follow-up album, Ghost of a Dog (1990), fared less well. As a solo artist, Brickell released Picture Perfect Morning (1994) and Volcano (2003). In 2006 she reunited with some of the original members of The New Bohemians and they released the Stranger Things album.

Brickell had a role as a folk singer in the 1989 film Born on the Fourth of July. Her version of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is featured on the film's soundtrack. Many computer users know her from the "Good Times" video which was included as part of the multimedia samples on the Windows 95 installation CD-ROM.

Brickell married songwriter Paul Simon in 1992. They have three children.

"... breezy pop with a mischievous, sometimes haunting edge."-USA Today

Harper Simon and Edie Brickell have written and collaborated casually during their many years of friendship. Yet in the last two years that collaboration has become more formalized thanks to a series of recording sessions in New York City with several friends including Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto). Naming themselves The Heavy Circles, the duo's self-titled debut recording is out now.

Many years ago Simon had an idea to invite Brickell to join him in the studio with several of his friends. Placing her in a different recording environment, might, he thought, be inspiring creatively and result in magic. With this in mind, Simon arranged a session-many friends and colleagues joined in. The list was lengthy: Lennon, Honda, Martha Wainwright, drummer Matt Johnson (Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley), string arranger Joan Wasser (Rufus Wainwright), Inara George (the Bird and the Bee), Money Mark, Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Elysian Fields' Jennifer Charles and Orin Bloedow, and Theremin player Pamelia Kurstin.

The Heavy Circles shine a new light on Brickell's vocals and lyrics-stylishly different from her critically acclaimed time with her solo projects and the New Bohemians. For Simon, this group spotlights his blossoming song writing talents and natural ability to produce. The album is co-produced by Harper Simon and Bryce Goggin.

Such a unique talent. I wish they would have had more than 1 solid album. She married paul Simon and kinda went into obscurity. Thanks for the lens. Brings back great memories!

I have often wondered what she did after her first hit, but never took the time to find out. She has such an unusual voice, I'm glad to know she's still active in the music biz. Thanks for sharing!

I've been a fan since "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" came out. I think it was one of the first CDs I bought.

Nice! I've always had a thing for Edie's voice, both as a singer and songwriter. But the singing voice has always calmed me. She could sing nothing but mashed potatoes for 3:42 and I'd be subdued.

    Thanks!
