Professor Ed Lucia (Fencing Coach)
Ed Lucia was my Varsity fencing coach from 1970-1973.
He had a tremendous impact on my life not just in the sport of Fencing but in succeeding in the game of life...
I and my teammates honor him and offer this tribute to a great coach, a mentor, and a great humanitarian.

Chapter 1: The Art of Fencing
-
My name is Jack Lee. I was a fencer from 1969-1982. I started in College and took an elective PE course in fencing during my freshmen year. I was asked by the instructor to join the JV team who happens to be the JV coach. Later, I was good enoug...
A poem written by Lucia in High School - Engravings in Steel (1933)
Filled with bubb'ling wine
Jest were bandied forth
Toasts proposed and quaffed;
Through the noisy mirth
Rose an angry shout;
O'er the laces white
Trickles streams of red;
Oaths resounded clear
Utter silence now;
"You I challenge Sir!"
"And I accept your glove!"
"Gentlemen give pause --"
"Insults must be purged!"
"Lying tongues must cease!"
Now the space is cleared,
Doublets thrown aside;
Blade caresses blade,
Dust flied from the boards;
Sparkling are the swords,
Sparkling more the eyes;
"Use thy secret thrust!"
Shouts an eager voice.
Round the circle clear
Wary duelists tread;
Husbanding their strength
Seeking careless guards;
Swiftly speeds the lunge
Cobra's rival - ah! -
Slowly drops a sword
Foible carmine stained;
Slower sinks a form
On the tavern floor;
Sinister the hue
Seeping through the lace;
Ghastlier the hue spreading on the face
Tortured is the scream
Of the sufferer's cry;
Anguished more the face
Of the vanquisher.
Forming are the cups
Filled with bubb'ling wine;
Yet the jests are stilled
And no toasts are raised.

- Mr. Litzenberg, I hope this gets to you. I was a young CID agent at Ft. Lee in 1968 and I had the bad fortune to pull duty over the Thanksgiving weekend. You and your family were kind enough to invite me to you home for dinner, a kindness have always remembered. I was sent to Korea (Irish luck) and finished my two year term there. I returned to the states in 1969 and as I had my law degree I ended up spending my career at PepsiCo where I was a corporate attorney. I am retired now with five children, one daughter and four sons. The reason for this email (I found you in google)from a person from your long distant past is that you are really the only FBI agent I can remember knowing and my youngest son Patrick who is 25 and a Skidmore graduate would very much like to join the bureau . Any thought would be most appreciated and once again, 41 years later, thank you for that turkey dinner. Gerry Casey academygerry@aol.com 914 715-7308.

- George,
Thanks for your first hand story on Prof. Lucia. By the way, my brother-in-law
is a retired FBI special agent out of NJ office. His name is Eugene Lee. Wonder if you know him.

- Edward Lucia was married to my father's sister Helen. I remember Uncle Ed as far back as WWII when he was a company commander in U.S. Navy Boot Camp. He was a good frend and mentor. As an adult, I developed a fond respect for him and spent many wonderful days with him as we hunted, talked and shared our expierences with each other. As an FBI Agent, I marveled at his grasp of foreign and domestic affairs as regards to national security and law enforcement. We shared a common fondness for firearms and our Country. He has been gone 25 years now, but my fondness for him is everlasting. He will always be in my heart.

- Coach Lucia was more than a fencing coach to me and my teammates. He gave us confidence and the skills to succeed both on the strip and in the real world. He is one of my heros and my personal Saint as I described in my Squidbook.

- Coach Lucia was one of the great influences in my college years at CCNY. He inspired me to excel in the sport and by extension gave encouragement to my academic endeavors. It hase been over 35 years since I left CCNY and the Varsity Fencing Team. But I cherish my memories of Coach Lucia.

- When I was a freshman at the Baruch School of CCNY-Varsity Fencing team was housed there rather than at the uptown campus. I tried out for the team;Eddie rejected me, but I pushed him. He let me try out and 2 years later- I and Marty Wertleib and Elliot Mills won the ECAC IFA sabre championship.
